The product of an international collective of artists, architects and writers who create collaborative projects and publications, this third edition of Surface Tension's Supplement series documents three years of artistic research, site-specific work and location-based practices in Curitiba, Brazil--providing an in-depth exploration of the city's economically marginal favela dwellers, who venture throughout the public spaces of Curitiba in search of recyclable materials. Documentation and texts elaborate on the cultural and political issues that come to light through various uses of public space. Originally developed as a collaborative installation between international and local artists--including Ken Ehrlich, Brandon LaBelle, Octávio Camargo and Guilherme Soares--exhibited at Curitiba's Ybakatu Gallery, this publication raises pertinent questions about the consequences of cross-cultural and site-specific collaboration and proffers an experimental approach toward political inquiry and intermedia practice.

"Soak Wash Rinse Spin" investigates the cycles of the Tolleson Design creative process through a textual and graphic layering of information involving four phases: research (the intake of as much information as they can gather), collaboration (with the client and with the other members of the creative team), visual exploration (the workbook process, which includes refinements and the examination of multiple options), and environmental influences (consideration of the ultimate purpose of the solution). Tolleson Design, located in San Francisco since its inception in 1984, produces corporate and product identity, annual reports, web and interactive design, packaging, and environmental graphics for a broad client base that includes Kodak, Nike, Microsoft, Virgin Interactive, Urban Outfitters, and the San Francisco Ballet. Their work has appeared in design publications such as Communication Arts, Graphis, and I.D. Magazine, and has received hundreds of awards.

Résumé:
Envisioning Architecture, the first in a series of three titles showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative architecture and design collection, features a wide variety of drawings by great architects of the modern period, from early masters such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to contemporary practitioners including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, and others. Revealing the range of aesthetic viewpoints in architecture since the late 19th century, these drawings also cumulatively trace the development of the field, almost incidentally making the crucial point that in this increasingly technological age, the age-old discipline of drawing is as vital and inventive as ever. The book opens with an exploration of the relatively brief history of collecting architectural drawings, whose practice dates back little farther than the 16th century.

Résumé:
For many, the idea of Space Architecture as a discipline lies in the domain of science fiction, where everything is possible simply because it happens "very far in the future". Is Space Architecture a fiction or reality? This book explores if and how architectural principles and strategies need to be transformed when applied to the extreme conditions of outer space. It presents concepts developed by great minds in the fields of space exploration and science-fiction, ones which can inspire new ways into the future. The book also presents the philosophy of Space Architecture, arguing for example that the design of space habitats needs to be human-centred while defining ways for humans to co-exist in new environments. These views are complemented by examples of architectures from current and planned space missions, organised by private companies as well as government agencies.

Résumé:
A personal book about material anxiety in creative work, ''The failed painter'' discusses singular and multiple production processes, perfectibility and imperfectability in times of virtual surface, and hunger for authenticity. Writing in the persona of the titular "failed painter," Ian Lynam, author of ''The impossibility of silence: Writing for designers, artists & photographers'' (2021), directly addresses design practitioners by calling them to investigate how the material components of their practice are sourced, delving into everything from the labor conditions of manufacturers to the intricate processes of production and distribution. Lynam grounds his investigation in the day-to-day with a collection of essays on design and art spanning culture, race, nation and sheer vandalism. This highly curated yet various assortment of approachable writing on aesthetics touches on space exploration, mercenaries, puberty, instant nostalgia, precarious labor and, of course, zombies.

Résumé:
Inspired initially by Jerome Rothenberg’s translation Flower World Variations, which Cecilia Vicuña (born 1948) first encountered in 1985, ''Cecilia Vicuña: Deer Book'' brings together nearly 40 years of the artist’s poetry, "poethical" translations and drawings related to cosmologies and mythologies surrounding the deer, and sacrificial dance in cultures around the world. Woven like one of her quipu installations, Vicuña’s texts—which include original compositions in Spanish as well as English translations by Daniel Borzutzky—become meditations on translation, not just of the sacred nature of this animal but on how our understandings of ceremony and ritual are transformed by this ongoing process. Taken as inspiration rather than conundrum, the impossibility of translation opens up poetic possibilities for Vicuña as she continues her lifelong exploration into the nature of communication across eras and distant lands, languages and shared symbols within Indigenous spiritualities.

Résumé:
''Enfleshed: Ecologies of entities and beings'' brings together practitioners, thinkers, and artists from across Eurasia to collectively explore multispecies ecologies. The volume reflects anthrodecentric and embodied approaches to collaboration and knowledge production––processes that are always interwoven with a multitude of entities and actors. In this book, the contributions flow like a river across the Eurasian continent, branching out into all directions. The contributors engage in an exploration of experimental epistemic alliances, which operate as a way to learn and make new dialogic relations. The conflicts generated by ecological disaster, war, the global economy, identity politics, and the power structures of knowledge production and science here intertwine with shamanisms, rituals, magic, speculation, politics, and poetics. How do we imagine an active and implicated role of the human as one being among other beings? What might this entail, and what might this generate?

Résumé:
Widely considered to be one of the most influential American living artists, Carrie Mae Weems has developed a practice celebrated for her exploration of cultural identity, power dynamics, desire, intimacy and social justice through a body of work that challenges the prevailing representations of race, gender, and class. Defined by the use of photography, installation, film, performance and textile, her remarkably diverse and radical practice questions dominant ideologies and historical narratives created and disseminated within science, architecture, and mass media. Published in the context of her solo exhibitions at Barbican Art Gallery London and Kunstmuseum Basel, this book brings together a selection of Weems’ own writings, lectures, and conversations for the first time, providing personal insights into themes such as the consequences of power, artistic appropriation, music as inspiration, history-making, and the normative role of architecture.
