Résumé:
However disparate the style or ethos, beneath architecture’s pluralism lies a number of categorical typologies. In this volume, Austrian architect Andreas Lechner has condensed his profound typological understanding into a single book. Divided into three chapters—Tectonics, Type, and Topos—Lechner’s book reflects upon twelve fundamental typologies: theater, museum, library, state, office, recreation, religion, retail, factory, education, surveillance, and hospital. Encompassing a total of 144 carefully selected examples of classic designs and buildings, ranging across an epic sweep from antiquity to the present, the book not only explains the fundamentals of collective architectural knowledge but traces the interconnected reiterations that lie at the heart of architecture’s transformative power.

Résumé:
Focusing on images and descriptions of movement and spectacle-everyday street activities, congregations in market piazzas, life in the Jewish ghetto and the plague hospital, papal and other ceremonial processions, public punishment, and pilgrimage routes-Rose Marie San Juan uncovers the social tensions and conflicts within seventeenth century Roman society that are both concealed within and prompted by mass-produced representations of the city. These depictions of Rome-guidebooks, street posters, broadsheets and brochures, topographic and thematic maps, city views, and collectible images of landmarks and other famous sights-redefined the ways in which public space was experienced, controlled, and utilized, encouraging tourists, pilgrims, and penitents while constraining the activities and movements of women, merchants, dissidents, and Jews.

Issue 435 highlights three projects: a university facility in the Netherlands by KAAN Architecten, a residential apartment in Finland by Steven Holl Architects, and a hospital in the United Kingdom by HKS + Cagni Williams Associates + Sonnemann Toon Architects. These innovative designs showcase diverse typologies, emphasizing functionality, sustainability, and architectural creativity. Additionally, this issue explores three transformative examples of evolving factory architecture—integrating production spaces with offices and incorporating natural elements to create healthier and more inspiring work environments. Last chapter takes a deep dive into the world of Japanese architect Tomoaki Uno. Known for his philosophy of creating “the unprecedented ordinary,” Uno’s work challenges conventional thinking and raises profound questions about the essence of architecture.

Résumé:
Challenging European cultural conventions, the work of Swiss-Bolivian artist Carmen Perrin is infused with fine undertones and references to her Latin American roots. In her preference for industrial mass-produced materials she transposes electric wire, cables and building materials into a subtle, ambiguous imagery and sculptures which activate the surrounding space. This publication presents 15 of her most important art-in-architecture interventions: in the Zurich headquarters of the Swiss National Bank, the Dock Midfield Terminal of Zurich-Kloten Airport, Lucerne's Gynaecological Hospital and further projects in France, Brazil, USA (New York) and Switzerland. Carmen Perrin, born in Bolivia in 1953,immigrated to Switzerland in 1960.She now lives in France and teaches at Geneva's École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

Résumé:
This volume investigates the dissolution of the classical paradigm of architecture as imitative form in the context of the French Enlightenment, and analyzes the emergence of a new logic of architecture based on a biopolitical process of subject formation. Wallenstein draws especially on the late work of Michel Foucault for his argument and distinguishes Foucault’s theory of biopolitics from that of Giorgio Agamben. Published shortly after the release of the first English translation of Foucault’s The Birth of Biopolitics, this is the first volume that specifically relates the biopolitical concept to architecture. The book concludes with a pictorial essay on the development over the last two centuries of the modern hospital, a building type that epitomizes the unfolding of this new architectural logic.

Résumé:
The Argentine architect Ignacio Dahl Rocha and the Swiss architect Jacques Richter have been regarded as prominent champions of an elegant brand of modernity at least since their design of the Espacité Tower on Place Le Corbusier in La Chaux-de-Fonds and their renovation of Jean Tschumis Nestlé corporate headquarters on the shores of Lake Geneva. Their work in the United States and Canada, which began when they were students together at Yale University, is increasingly expanding to include South America as well. In the last fifteen years, they have completed numerous projects, including cultural, educational, administrative, hospital, and residential buildings, primarily in Switzerland but also in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina. The most important are presented here, in this only current monograph on the firm.
