Résumé:
Bucky Inc. offers a deep exploration of Richard Buckminster Fuller’s work and thought to shed new light on the questions raised by our increasingly electronic world. It shows that Fuller’s entire career was a multi-dimensional reflection on the architecture of radio. He always insisted that the real site of architecture is the electromagnetic spectrum. His buildings were delicate mobile instruments for accessing the invisible universe of overlapping signals. Every detail was understood as a way of tuning into hidden waves. Architecture was built in, with, for and as radio. Bucky Inc. rethinks the legacy of one of the key protagonists of the twentieth-century. It draws extensively on Fuller’s archive to follow his radical thinking from toilets to telepathy, plastic to prosthetics, and data to deep-space. It shows how the critical arguments and material techniques of arguably the single most exposed designer of the last century were overlooked at the time but have become urgently relevant today.

Detroit 1968 was first published in 1972 under the title New American People, and was the subject of Enrico Natali's 1969 solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. In his introduction to the 1972 edition, Hugh Edwards, former Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago, wrote: "All the photographs in the present collection were taken in 1967-1970 in Detroit, which in no way restricts their presentation as a brief of how Americans look and live today. These scenes and incidents might have occurred anywhere in the United States in this time when regional characteristics are disappearing ... this is a view of a situation and condition, not a localization." Forty years later, we can now also appreciate the specificity of Natali's subject, as this body of work presents an insightful exploration of Detroit when it was on the cusp of losing half of its inhabitants, along with its status as America's industrial capital.

Résumé:
Forecolosed: Rehousing the American Dream is an exploration of new architectural possibilities for American cities and suburbs in the aftermath of the recent foreclosure crisis in the United States. During the summer of 2011, five interdisciplinary teams of architects, urban planners, ecologists, engineers and landscape designers were enlisted by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and MoMA PS1 to envision new housing infrastructures that could catalyze urban transformation, particularly in the country’s suburbs. Drawing on ideas proposed in The Buell Hypothesis, a research publication prepared by the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture at Columbia University, each team focused on a specific location within a “megaregion” to come up with inventive solutions for the future of housing and cities. This publication presents each of these proposals (exhibited at MoMA in Spring 2012) in detail, through photographs, drawings and renderings as well as interviews with the team leaders. Foreclosedexamines the relationship between land, infrastructure and urban form, exploring potential futures for America’s extended metropolises.

Résumé:
Only in the last decade have climatologists developed an accurate picture of yearly climate conditions in historical times. This development confirmed a long-standing suspicion: that the world endured a 500-year cold snap -- The Little Ice Age -- that lasted roughly from A.D. 1300 until 1850. "The little ice age" tells the story of the turbulent, unpredictable and often very cold years of modern European history, how climate altered historical events, and what they mean in the context of today's global warming. With its basis in cutting-edge science, "The little ice age" offers a new perspective on familiar events. Renowned archaeologist Brian Fagan shows how the increasing cold affected Norse exploration; how changing sea temperatures caused English and Basque fishermen to follow vast shoals of cod all the way to the New World; how a generations-long subsistence crisis in France contributed to social disintegration and ultimately revolution; and how English efforts to improve farm productivity in the face of a deteriorating climate helped pave the way for the Industrial Revolution and hence for global warming.

Typography today exists in conflict with classical font design and contemporary influences such as analogue distortion, screen applications, street culture, deconstruction, hand lettering and illustrative letter forms. "Type one" not only presents an overview of the diversity in current typography, but also reveals where conventions have become established and where valid new approaches exist. In addition to a selection of typefaces and their applications, the book features articles by and interviews with international experts such as Jean François Rappot, House industries’ Andy Cruz and Ken Barber, Norm and Professor Tanja Diezmann. Topics range from the democratization of the font creation process by the computer to how much existing approaches are based on the same fonts. These texts are edited and commented by Silja Bilz, former project and product manager for Corporate type at the renowned Linotype library. While "Type one" provides practical context and examples, it also investigates the experimental and inspirational side of font design. This combination makes the book a resource for anyone seeking an up to date exploration and understanding of typography.

Résumé:
Spanning 65 years of Ed Ruscha’s remarkable career and mirroring his own cross-disciplinary approach, ''Ed Ruscha / Now then'' features over 250 objects, produced from 1958 to the present, including paintings, drawings, prints, films, photographs, artist’s books and installations. Published to accompany the most comprehensive presentation of the artist’s work to date, and his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this richly illustrated catalog highlights Ruscha’s most acclaimed works alongside lesser-known aspects of his practice. Essays by an interdisciplinary group of contributors examine Ruscha’s work under a new light, beyond the categories of Pop and Conceptual art with which he has traditionally been associated, to present fresh perspectives on one of the most influential figures in postwar American art. Taken together, they underscore Ruscha’s singular contributions, including his material exploration of language, experiments with unconventional mediums--nsuch as gunpowder, chocolate or chewing tobacco-- and his groundbreaking self-published books. Supplemented by an illustrated chronology and exhibition history, this publication captures the ceaseless reinvention that has defined his prolific, six-decade career.

This exploration of built and yet-to-be-realized aquatic habitats shows how water has become architecture's next frontier. Whether they're floating on top, hovering over, or submerged beneath the water, each of the more than fifty structures examined here demonstrates an innovative use of water resources. Colourfully illustrated with photographs, drawings, and plans, this global and historic sampling includes Shanghai's Bionic Tower, complete with its own lake; Biorock, an artificial reef in the Indian Ocean; an undersea hotel where scuba divers can spend a comfortable night; and Sweden's Ice Hotel, where translucent frozen walls reveal the beauty of the Northern Lights. Each of these projects demonstrates man's ability to live in the water without interfering with nature's rhythms. Together they offer reassuring proof that today's architects are finding workable and appealing solutions to the problems of shrinking resources and growing populations. Résumé:
Not only a complete monograph of Carme Pis architectural oeuvre, "Carme Pis : architectures" traces the development of her practice over several decades via an in-depth investigation of the recurring themes and concerns that inform her work. Through studies of significant city projects and selected works, critical contributions from Peter Smithson, Daniela Colafranceschi, Rafael Moneo, Pedro Azura, Rafael Argullol, Francis Rambert, Juan Jose Lahuerta, Josep Quetglas, Magdelena Jaume and from Carme Pis herself, come together to elucidate the motivations of one of the most compelling figures currently working in the contemporary architectural landscape. This publication journeys from Pis early collaborations with Enric Miralles, characterised by an exploration of natural materials and forms that merge with their setting, to the evolution of her own emphatic works a striking articulation of complex shapes and spaces that maintain a clear commitment to the quality of construction while perfectly integrating with the environment, whether natural or urban. "Carme Pis : architectures" is a comprehensive overview of the atypical architectural expression of Carme Pis truly unique and intriguing practice.
