Résumé:
"20:21 - Emerging Hong Kong Architects" presents a spectrum of 20 architectural works from 20 Hong Kong architects selected from an open competition "Emerging Hong Kong Architects" organized by Hong Kong Institute of Architects in April 2003. Architects participating in the competition were asked to respond to 'architecture' amidst this complex 21st century where multi-disciplinary frontiers are more obscure than ever, space topographies are transforming, and active hybridization is in the making. In the book, the architects write about their aspirations in their profession, present their views on architecture, and explore future scenarios; each of different modulations and sensibilities expressed in their own architectural language, and some articulated through the exploration process with various art forms. In a joint effort to navigate through the vista of architecture, this is the first publication from Hong Kong Institute of Architects bringing together a multitude of the established, the upcoming and the heretofore unknown young architects in Hong Kong. Publication in English and Chinese.

cube. It's one of nature's purest, most basic forms. We see cubes every day, usually made of elemental materials like sugar and ice. But what if the cube is something altogether more complicated? What happens when cubes are constructed of plywood and bamboo, foam and hay, chopped up telephone books and strands of chicken wire? Cube is a speculative investigation of this primal shape, a tactile exploration of the imagination in which unexpected materials create surprisingly beautiful and intriguing objects. Imagine you're asked to create something interesting out of this simplest of forms using whatever materials you can find at hand. That's the design exercise architect David Morrow Guthrie gives his students each year at Rice University, and the results, over 50 of which are presented in this handy little block of a book, will inspire any designer who is looking for ideas and inspiration, whether from elemental forms or innovative ways of using materials.

Résumé:
Arguably the most influential document in the history of urban planning, Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, coauthored by Edward Bennett and produced in collaboration with the Commercial Club of Chicago, proposed many of the city’s most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. Carl Smith’s history reveals the Plan’s central role in shaping the ways people envision the cityscape and urban life itself. Smith’s narrative begins with a survey of Chicago’s stunning rise from a tiny frontier settlement to the nation’s second-largest city. He then offers an illuminating exploration of the Plan’s creation and reveals how it embodies the renowned architect’s belief that cities can and must be remade for the better. The Plan defined the City Beautiful movement and was the first comprehensive attempt to reimagine a major American city. Smith points out the ways the Plan continues to influence debates, even a century after its publication, about how to create a vibrant and habitable urban environment.

Résumé:
Published to accompany an exhibition at the Technisches Museum, Vienna. "Blue. Inventing the River Danube" combines a cultural history of the river with an artistic exploration of its present. The journey begins in Vienna and continue eastwards along the river for two thousand kilometres. Historical photograhs tell the story of how technologyreinvented the Danube from the middle of the 19th century onwards. They depict the development of the continent's second largest river, and its cultural and economic significance for central and south-easthern Europe. The river as it is today is the theme of the artistic work by Iosif Kiraly (Bucharest)and Sophie Ristelhueber (Paris). In winter and spring 2004/2005 the two photographers travelled along the Danube, eastwards and westwards. Kiraly visited places that have been shaped by the industrial age. Ristelhueber followed the Danube along its last few miles to Sulina, the place where the Danube ends and the Black Sea begins.

Résumé:
"Rubble" presents key episodes in the world of demolition. Stretching over more than five hundred years of razing and toppling, this story looks back to London’s Great Fire of 1666, where self-deputized wreckers artfully blew houses apart with barrels of gunpowder to halt the furious blaze, and spotlights the advent of dynamite - courtesy of demolition’s patron saint, Alfred Nobel - that would later fuel epochal feats of unbuilding such as the implosion of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing complex in St. Louis. Rubble also delves beyond these bravura blasts to survey the world-jarring invention of the wrecking ball; the oddly stirring ruin of New York’s old Pennsylvania Station, that potent symbol of the wrecker run amok; and the ever busy bulldozers in places as diverse as Detroit, Berlin, and the British countryside. "Rubble" is also an exploration of what happens when buildings fall, when monuments topple into memory, and when “destructive creativity” tears down to build again.

Résumé:
A heightened interest in the role of the senses in society is sweeping the social sciences, supplanting older paradigms and challenging conventional theories of representation. This journal provides a forum for the exploration of this new area of inquiry - the senses in culture and society. It brings together work in the social sciences and incorporates cutting-edge developments in art, design and architecture. Every volume contains something for and about each of the senses, both singly and in all sorts of novel configurations. Shaped by culture, gender and class, the senses mediate between mind and body, idea and object, self and environment. The senses are increasingly extended beyond the body through technology, and catered to by designers and marketers, yet persistently elude all efforts to capture and control them. Artists now experiment with the senses in bold new ways, disrupting conventional canons of aesthetics. Simply put, sensation is fundamental to our experience of the world.

Résumé:
For the first time in history, more than half the people of the world live in cities. Comprehending the impact of this widespread urbanization requires an awareness of the complex relationships between cities and natural ecosystems. This book moves beyond the anti-urban lamentations that often dominate today's academic discourse to examine the evolution of cities and to illuminate the roles that humans play in shaping their environments, both natural and constructed. Christopher G. Boone and Ali Modarres argue that understanding the multiple forces of urbanization requires a holistic approach to the interactions of social, cultural, economic, political, and environmental factors. Without casting judgments, " City and environment " seeks to engage readers in an exploration of cities from a truly global perspective. Throughout, it illuminates the social-ecological systems of cities not as an academic exercise—although informing academic audiences is one of its goals—but ultimately to help transform cities into livable and ecologically sustainable environments.

Résumé:
FUTURE is a two-part publication by Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, published over the course of 3 years by Edition Patrick Frey. The first publication is entitled FUTURE MEMORIES and deals with the question of how our idea of the future has changed over the past decades, how this affects our perception of the present, and how we face the coming changes. The second publication, titled WATER COLUMN, revolves around a place, a realm, that directly surrounds us and yet for most people is as distant and alien as only the vastness of space could be: the world beneath the surface of the water. Only through the use of elaborate technology are we able to dive ever deeper and explore these uncharted waters. But exploration inevitably leads to exploitation, and we're liable to destroy this underwater world before we even get a close look at it, let alone begin to understand it.

Résumé:
From "Magic and myth-work to care and repair" is a two-part book bringing together fourteen essays broadly concerned with the "fiction of the self" and with practices and explorations beyond that fiction. Each part of the book approaches this theme from a different angle. The first part, entitled "On magic and myth-work," deals with practices of transformation and with contemporary myth-making in relation to landscape, performance, and writing. The second part, “On Care and Repair,” gathers together essays that are more personal, but that also look to various technologies (or devices) of self-care alongside ideas of collaboration and the collective. Crucial throughout this exploration are questions of agency and self-narration, but also how these connect to larger issues around historical trauma, neoliberalism, and ecological crisis. The essays reference many other texts and fellow travellers, and also draw on the author's own experiences (and teaching) within various art and theory worlds, as well as with performance, magical practices, gaming, and Buddhism.

Résumé:
"Interaction of color" is often presented as an overarching theory of color, but it is actually a method of learning how to better see and understand color—many of the color exercises illustrated in "Interaction of color" were devised by Albers’s students: cutting and pasting, looking, pondering, and learning. This workbook companion is a teaching tool designed to enable readers to engage in the kinds of tactile creativity and exploration that characterized Albers’s own classroom. Focusing on eight of the most important lessons in "Interaction of color", this book invites readers to learn by doing, using only simple materials. Core instructions for each exercise are enhanced by additional tips, references to Albers’s original text and illustrations, and stories about how Albers presented the ideas in class. The book and exercises are sufficiently nuanced to challenge and inspire seasoned artists, designers, and educators while also being readily accessible to younger readers and less-experienced practitioners.
