Most consumer products come primarily from the Pearl River Delta, the "factory of the world" with the largest industrial region on earth. The delta has attracted millions of poor rural residents to settle in factory towns in hopes for a better life. Factory Towns of South China opens a window on these walled compounds, exposing the gritty establishments, crowded dormitories and monotonous labor carried out by workers. Some function as self-contained cities, with their own fire brigade, hospital, bank, TV station and as many as half a million workers living within the compounds. Other factories are scattered in larger villages to mask their existence and evade governmental crackdowns on the production of fake consumer goods and illegal casino machines.

The Power of Process sets out the importance of Michael Pearson and his work, from his initial work within the family firm, his teaching and presidency of the Architectural Association, to small-scale artists’ studios and large-scale hospital planning, to the first thorough appreciation of Burne House, his most important work. The title refers to Michael Pearson’s abiding concern for ‘process’ in modern architecture — that is, how the conception and making of architecture is driven by information systems, the inter-connectedness between a buildings use, how it is manufactured and, importantly how its use can adapt and change over time. As such, his interest in process puts him at the forefront of the British High-Tech architecture, more famously associated with Richard Rogers and Norman Foster.

Photographer Christopher Payne was granted permission by New York City's Parks & Recreation Department to photograph the island over a period of years. The results are both beautiful and startling. On North Brother Island, devoid of human habitation for fifty years, buildings great and small are being consumed by the unchecked growth of vegetation. In just a few decades, a forest has sprung up where once there were the streets and manicured lawns of a hospital campus. North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City includes a history by University of Pennsylvania preservationist Randall Mason, who has studied the island extensively, and an essay by the writer Robert Sullivan (Rats, The Meadowlands), who came along on one of the rare expéditions.

Résumé:
A building's façade sets the aesthetic tone for its entire design while serving a variety of functions, from regulating light and protecting against the elements to providing insulation for temperature and sound. This book details hundreds of examples of interesting and progressive façades from around the world. Presented in double-page spreads, each façade is photographed from different angles and includes texts that describe their significance. Readers can learn how traditional mashrabiyas in Abu Dhabi are being engineered to respond to light and to regulate heat, how a hospital in Mexico City has been constructed with "smog-eating" tiles, and how a "bio-adaptive" façade in Germany uses algae to generate energy and provide shade. Informative and accessible, this compendium is a highly useful resource for architects, engineers, and designers.

Résumé:
"The Barrack, 1572–1914" tells the little-known history of a building type that many people used to register as an alien interloper in conventionally built-up areas. The barrack is a mostly lightweight construction, a hybrid between a shack, tent, and traditional building. Easy to erect and to take down, it is—after the introduction of railways and later motor vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries—also easy to transplant from one location to another. Originating as a standardized accommodation for semi-permanent military encampments in the late sixteenth century, the barrack became a mass-produced utility of military and civilian mobilization in the nineteenth century, providing immediate shelter for soldiers, prisoners, or displaced persons, as well as well-ventilated hospital wards for the sick. The barrack played a decisive role in shaping the political space of modernity.

Résumé:
The buildings in ''Future history'' are examples of ‘Razionalismo’, the Italian version of International Style Modernism built in the 1930s. Emerging during Mussolini’s dictatorship, Razionalismo architecture was contemporaneous and frequently indivisible in design from official fascist building, now referred to as Stile Littorio. Italian fascism and Modernism blossomed in approximately the same period, during which the fascist state engaged in a significant infrastructural and institutional building programme. Countless school, hospital, road, rail, housing, government building and redevelopment projects were realised, several of which are viewed today as noteworthy examples of Razionalismo. These projects put architecture at the service of a state equally intent on improving health and housing, making its might conspicuous domestically and colonising in Africa. The photographs in ''Future history'' are interleaved with extracts from a series of papers first published in 1926 and 1927 by Gruppo 7.

Résumé:
During the Cold War era, the songs that Soviet citizens could listen to were ruthlessly controlled by the state. But a secret underground subculture of music lovers and bootleggers defied the censors, building recording machines and making their own records of forbidden jazz, rock 'n' roll, and Russian music, cut onto used hospital x-ray film. Foregrounding interviews and oral testimonies gathered over five years, this volume presents the stories of the original bone bootleggers, their customers, musicians, record collectors, and commentators, evoking a spirited resistance to a repressive culture of prohibition and punishment. Richly illustrated with dozens of new images of Soviet x-ray discs and sound letters, the book details how the bootleggers worked, outlining the technical precedents of their techniques, situating their discs in a revised history of recorded media, and bringing a wealth of compelling new detail.

Résumé:
Under the title ‘Community Care’, AV Proyectos 128 features six works that cater to specific needs through an attentive and sensitive architecture that prioritizes a collective approach, as show the centers designed by Mae Architects, Vivas Arquitectos, or Dorte Mandrup. Paz Martín, architect and expert in the field, introduces the dossier with an essay that analyzes how assistance can shape the project strategy. Along the same lines, in an interview with the magazine the architect and professor Izaskun Chinchilla talks about the city of care and how the buildings that compose it are not just hospitals and clinics. In the process section, the complex by Herzog & de Meuron in North Zealand is an example of how to depart from traditional hospital building typologies. The issue also analyzes the high-rise construction boom in Albania, with proposals by MVRDV, Valerio Olgiati, and Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, among other firms.

Résumé:
Do both the zoo and the mental hospital induce psychosis, as humans are treated as animals and animals are treated as humans? How have we looked at animals in the past, and how do we look at them today? How have zoos presented themselves, and their purpose, over time? In response to the emergence of environmental and animal studies, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, theorists, literature scholars, and historians around the world have begun to explore the significance of zoological parks, past and present. “Zoo Studies” considers the modern zoo from a range of approaches and disciplines, united in a desire to blur the boundaries between human and nonhuman animals. This collection immerses readers in the lives of animals and their experiences of captivity and asks us to reflect on our own assumptions about both humans and animals. “Zoo Studies” will change the way readers see nonhuman animals and themselves.
