Résumé:
This book presents the artistic avant-gardes of the last five decades as a tapestry of incidents as fascinating and unlikely as any collection of myths or legends. Thinking more of Kafka's ''Parables'' than Vasari's ''Lives of the Artists,'' Rubinstein composes a series of micro-narratives celebrating the mystery and ingeniousness of these human activities which, for lack(...)

Résumé:
This book presents the artistic avant-gardes of the last five decades as a tapestry of incidents as fascinating and unlikely as any collection of myths or legends. Thinking more of Kafka's ''Parables'' than Vasari's ''Lives of the Artists,'' Rubinstein composes a series of micro-narratives celebrating the mystery and ingeniousness of these human activities which, for lack of a better term, we call ''contemporary art.'' Each of the fifty episodes in ''The Miraculous'' is a detailed telling of the circumstances surrounding a single work of art; only the name of the artist is withheld until the end of the book.

The people and things we want feel very far away. Everything else feels far too near. Daily life is incorrectly calibrated. This is causing many of us to simply withdraw from the public sphere, wandering off into our own private worlds. Those who remain are struggling to maintain the illusion of critical mass. In reality, politics, culture, commerce and social media have all lost heir drive, falling forward on inertia alone. Everyone wants the same thing. We all crave spaciousness. We all feel too close, without any closeness. This issue of “Real Review” is dedicated to the paradoxical sensation of “absolute proximity”.

This book tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling, dramatically and unexpectedly, with wild creatures. Today, many of these cities have more large and charismatic wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities—the most artificial and human-dominated of all(...)

Résumé:
This book tells the story of how cities across the United States went from having little wildlife to filling, dramatically and unexpectedly, with wild creatures. Today, many of these cities have more large and charismatic wild animals living in them than at any time in at least the past 150 years. Why have so many cities—the most artificial and human-dominated of all Earth’s ecosystems—grown rich with wildlife, even as wildlife has declined in most of the rest of the world? And what does this paradox mean for people, wildlife, and nature on our increasingly urban planet?

This book accompanies the exhibition on Horino Masao at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. A primary figure in Japan’s ‘New Photography’ movement, he is considered “essential to any consideration of the formation of modern photography in Japan.” Active prior to World War II, Horino Masao addressed a variety of subjects, from theatre photographs and portraits to photomontage experiments, and later, the social realities of Japan as a photojournalist. With an emphasis on his work during the 1930s, the book presents an extensive view of the history of Japanese photography through the prodigious and exhaustive lens of one man.

Résumé:
Francesco di Giorgio Martini's fortress complexes, created at the end of the Quattrocento, continue to look experimental and highly speculative half a millenium later by their semiotic character. They represent an extreme of European architectural history, occupying a position where architecture and sculpture cannot be sharply distinguished any longer. The creations represented in this book have their origins in a particular historic situation: the emergence of firearms in the 14th century and their spread in the 15th century had shifted the balance of warfare in favour of the attacking side, against which the defensive structure had not yet found a remedy.

Résumé:
The pioneers of ecological architecture today are necessarily researchers as much as architects, in any conventional sense of the term. Sustainability is the key criterion in this field, and ecologically sound solutions for the designs of homes are the key challenge (homes the most commonly built structure). Ecological Living assesses a selection of some recently built ecological habitats, collecting several built examples from a variety of French architects, examining precursors such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto and Pierre Lajus, plus proposals for European architects and architecture students and inquiries into the ecological viability of detached housing and tower blocks.

Magnago Lampugani’s slender Fabrikstrasse 12 construction gleams in the rays of sunlight without any glare. The white Carrara marble, blue awnings and delicate window parapets radiate lightness and joie de vivre – a style which also infuses the Dodici – the restaurant included in the project, whose colour scheme, furnishings and wall’s hanging with old photographs, greet its guests. The architect’s refined design for the Novartis Campus which also includes office spaces is thoroughly examined here. Colour photographs are presented alongside detailed plans, elevations, and essays written by specialists on specific aspects of the building, including signage, building services and work places.
