Résumé:
Illustrated with color photographs of Hoffmann's masterpieces- on their own and as parts of interiors-this monograph focuses on significant aspects of Hoffmann's career: his early years as a member of the Secessionist Movement and founder of the Vienna Workshops, his role in the intellectual rebellion that took place in Austria; and his progression toward a Modernist ethic. It takes readers through four dazzling interiors designed by Hoffmann and furnished with his signature pieces, including furniture, wall and floor coverings, textiles, lighting, ceramics, glassware and metalwork. The overall effect of these rooms is to be transported to a world in which form marries function, and simplicity and refinement reign supreme.

Résumé:
Architectural historian and leading voice on Adolf Loos, Christopher Long returns with another commentary on the Austrian pioneer of modern architecture. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), an opponent of ornamentation on buildings, designed buildings in Vienna that contrasted with the popular Art Nouveau and Secession styles. In this anthology of eight essays, Long takes on the meanings of Loos’ writings and design work, the cultural world in which he was embedded, and how he was regarded by the critics and public. Long exposes and explodes old myths about Loos, fostering in the process a new, brilliant and compelling view of one of modern architecture’s key protagonists.

Résumé:
In 1926 philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein designed and built a house in Vienna for his sister. The only building designed by Wittgenstein, it crystallized his philosophy of architecture-notable for its clarity, precision, and austerity-and served as a foil for his written work. This detailed investigation of the house is based on 30 years of extensive research. It examines the formal properties of the structure, including Wittgenstein's attention to proportion, detail, and color. It is also the story of one man's relationship to this extraordinary building: in 1971, author Bernhard Leitner was instrumental in saving the Wittgenstein House from destruction and having it declared a national landmark.

Résumé:
Architectural interventions aimed to not only preserve the existing historic built fabric but also develop it with care and with a view to the future are rare. The Batthyány-Strattmann and Trauttmansdorff palaces in Vienna are buildings with an impressive and turbulent history. They have been comprehensively refurbished, restored and extended to suit contemporary requirements. As a contribution towards a vibrant, historic city center, the palaces will not be sold in the context of speculative development but will be let for residential and work purposes. The book recounts the history of the palaces using photographic documentation to illustrate the connection between trust funds, architecture, and artistic interpretation as a cultural statement.

Résumé:
The spring exhibition in the Architekturzentrum Wien is devoted to a history of ideas of appropriating land in urban space. Curator Elke Krasny presents historical and contemporary case studies that illustrate bottom-up urban development in Chicago, Leipzig, Vienna, Bremen, New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Porto Alegre, Havanna or Quito. She offers an overview of self-organised, collective, informal movements and of the spaces they create. Hands-On Urbanism presents a different history of urbanism that puts pressing questions to architects and planners and enquires about how we use resources. What can be learned from this urban history from below and how do architects operate within these processes?

Résumé:
Thirty years ago, the Vienna artist and architect Heinz Frank published a book entitled "Children's book for architects," a selection of his drawings from the 1970s, in which animals and ghostly creatures "haunt" buildings of various kinds. Frank's works on paper collected here once again shake at the rational foundations of architecture. With humor and imagination, the artist draws on the anarchic potential of animals and of children's drawings. "Children's books like this one," writes US-American architecture critic Felicity D. Scott in her contribution to this book, "prompt us to rethink the world, even to see it differently." Eight color-in sheets, included with the book, invite us to "enter into Frank's animal form of refusing architecture."

Author Ralf Bock reveals the sensuality of Loos's interior designs, demonstrating that Loos was not an architect of the "white modern movement," but rather, he fought against it. A careful analysis of Loos's ideology and oeuvre, this book features 30 existing projects in 160 extraordinary full-color images by the celebrated French photographer Philippe Ruault, who has completely rephotographed Loos's works. These new images offer different interpretations of Loos' interiors and bring him back to the center of contemporary architectural debate. The color photographs are supplemented by archival photos from the Loos Archive of the Albertina, Vienna, and a completely new set of project drawings.
