Résumé:
''Structures of displacement'' documents a joint project of the [applied] Foreign Affairs lab of the Institute of Architecture at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The project involved the conception and design of an agricultural training center at Harsham Camp, a refugee camp in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq (2016–2019). This book presents [a]FA’s mapping of the Harsham Camp to identify and describe its economic networks and habitats, and provides insights into the individual biographies of the camp’s residents. The project was conducted as part of the UN mandate to stabilize Iraq and support economic recovery and reconstruction for displaced persons and returnees.

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) entered the modernist canon with her “Frankfurt Kitchen.” She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, a women’s rights activist, and, last but not least, a heroine of the resistance to the Nazi dictatorship. In this book, available in English for the first time, recent research in the fields of art history, contemporary history, pedagogy, and gender studies provides a nuanced picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, whose estate is archived at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The volume explores her rich architectural oeuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political development as a Communist, and her current reception. It breaks through the mythology to present a rounded picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, an icon of architectural history.

Amongst their best known lighting projects are the Museums Quarter in Vienna, the ship-building hall in Zurich, the art gallery in Graz and the gas containers in Simmering. One of Kress & Adams´ great strengths is their ability to interpret and express the architect´s spatial vision with light. Their integrated lighting concepts are derived primarily from the architecture whilst taking into consideration the functional requirements. The development of individual light fittings is also an essential part of creating a successful dialogue between architecture and lighting: minimalist and highly expressive forms with a great degree of technical expertise are characteristic of their light designs.

Résumé:
How a form of multifamily housing with idealistic roots became a ubiquitous model promoted by both public entities and private developers. Eminent historian Joshua Freeman rescues garden apartments—typically low-rise multifamily residences that enclose or are surrounded by landscaped gardens—from their invisibility in the American landscape. He details their outsized influence on housing policy and social policy as they helped upgrade living standards for working people. Inspired by the architectural innovations and socialist politics of British garden cities, Red Vienna, and German modernist housing in the 1920s, these large, centrally managed projects were mostly not public housing, but their capitalist developers worked with governments to keep down rents. The results were often relatively small apartments and large communal spaces, aimed at fostering actual American community.

Since its establishment in 1996, Vienna-based driendl*architects has searched for prototypical solutions in the fields of infrastructure and furniture, building, and urban design. "Ritual / Original" looks at two decades of work by driendl*architects. During this time, our environment has changed rapidly and significantly, and this is reflected in the evolution of the ideas and concepts that underlie the firm’s buildings and projects. Offering unparalleled insight into the inner workings of driendl*architects, the book explores selected designs and the firm’s approach more broadly.

It is impossible to imagine Austrian architecture and contemporary history without Karl Schwanzer, who would have marked his hundredth birthday in 2018. His buildings, like the BMW administration building in Munich, caused quite a furor domestically and abroad; his institute at the Technical University of Vienna influenced offices like Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link and ZUEND-UP. Posthumously, Schwanzer rose to cult status among his staff, students and clients, conferred especially for his passionate way of working, sparing no effort or expense, and for his relentless search for the optimum solution. In every sense, his life and work were unconventional. The idea to relate them in the form of a graphic novel is also quite unconventional, but certainly a logical consequence!

Résumé:
With Skies of Concrete, Austrian architectural photographer Gisela Erlacher explores a fascinating subject for urbanization—our ability to live, work, and play in what might seem like the most inhospitable of places. Erlacher had long been fascinated with the ways existing structures are modified to meet new transport needs, but a house wedged between two bridges in her native Vienna inspired a more extensive exploration of the leftover spaces. Erlacher traveled to China, Britain, and the Netherlands, capturing exquisite photographs of bridges, viaducts, and multistory highways, which focus specifically on the vacant and disused spaces and situations created by their construction. Beneath and between these structures, we find housing, parking, and storage, but also skate parks, tea houses, and food stalls in varying shades of legality.
