This book offers a critical look at the territory that today forms the state of Israel and the lasting historical role of agriculture, which sprang from the Neolithic revolution in the Middle East, had for a wide range of aspects of human social and ecological development. Topics considered include agriculture’s role in territorial appropriation and domestication, in structuring the development of urbanization, in creating a national homeland narrative for the Jewish state, and in changing the climate. "Israel Lessons" explores in particular the three major types of Israeli agricultural development: vernacular Palestinian/Bedouin, socialist utopian Kibbutz/Moshav, and contemporary high-tech desert farming. Presenting findings through text matched to striking images, graphics, and maps, and featuring proposals for architectural intervetions, it demonstrates how facts and narratives related to agriculture and the climate crisis are intertwined with geopolitics and sectarian ideals of an earthly paradise.

Résumé:
An argument for how the modernist credo "more with less" can guide sustainable architecture in the era of climate change. Over the past five hundred years, a rift has grown between the design and construction of buildings. "The turning point in architectural design" does not lament this rift, but rather sees it as an opportunity to explore new horizons in building design in the era of climate change. By taking a historical approach, this book shows how over time design has been less and less limited by the constraints of building materials and techniques and how novel architectural designs have pushed the boundaries of what is possible in construction. World-renowned architect Helmut Schulitz takes the modernist motto "more with less" to heart and applies its lessons to the future, where the demand for energy and resource conservation in all aspects of life—especially architecture—will be paramount.

Résumé:
Global climate change calls for swift, decisive measures, particularly from the world's metropolises. But how can cities ensure that urgently needed strategies are enacted, forging a path to a post-fossil fuel, post-atomic energy era? Using one district in Hamburg, Germany, as an example, Energy Atlas investigates how it might provide a model for future sustainability.

Résumé:
Becoming Water takes the reader on a tour of Canada’s glaciers, describing the stories they tell and educating the reader about how glaciers came to be, how they work and what their future holds in our warming world. By visiting Canada’s high and low Arctic and the mountain West, the reader will learn how varied and complex our glaciers really are, how they are measured and how they figure into the national and global story of inevitable change. The reader will learn to think like a scientist, in particular how to look at climate-related data that contains cycles, trends and shifts, and then ponder what questions to ask in the face of our dramatically changing environment. This book encourages Canadians to explore upstream from ourselves, learning about our origins and how climate change and encroaching human settlement are drastically affecting our glaciers and therefore the natural and human landscapes that lie below—and are dependent upon—them.

Résumé:
In the fall of 2009, The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 selected five interdisciplinary teams of architects, engineers and landscape designers to propose solutions to the effects of climate change on New York's waterfront. The resulting proposals, exhibited at MoMA in 2010 in the exhibition "Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront," emphasize "soft" infrastructure interventions that would make New York City and its surrounding areas more ecologically sound and more resilient in responding to rising sea levels and storm surges. These innovative projects include the creation of salt- and freshwater wetlands, a Venice-like aqueous landscape, habitable piers and man-made islands, and a protective reef of living oysters. Published to document the exhibition, "Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront" presents these five projects in detail through essays that summarize the innovative workshop and exhibition, the dialogues they engendered with outside experts and political figures involved in regional planning, and the climate change and urban planning implications of the proposed solutions.
