Résumé:
Established by Ma Yansong in 2004, MAD Architects designs and builds organic and dreamlike architectures that invoke our spiritual and emotional connection with nature. It is an architecture of fiction, or perhaps even anticipation, where nature and architecture merge. This book, conceived and designed by the architect, takes readers on a “journey” along the office’s most significant projects, through photomontages, drawings, models, and images. Among these are the Absolute Towers outside Toronto, Harbin Opera House and Chaoyang Park Plaza in China, Clover House kindergarten in Japan, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, and UNIC in Paris.

Résumé:
Every map tells a story. Some provide a narrative for travelers, explorers, and surveyors or offer a visual account of changes to people’s lives and surroundings, while others tell imaginary tales, transporting us to fictional worlds created by writers and artists. In turn, maps generate more stories, taking users on new journeys in search of knowledge and adventure. By telling the stories behind the artifacts and those generated by them, "Talking Maps " reveals how each map is not just a tool for navigation but also a worldly proposal that helps us to understand who we are by describing where we are.

Résumé:
This monograph of French illustrator and cartoonist Jochen Gerner follows a research and thought process concerning the connections between text and image, typography and line, and includes numerous examples of his work. In his drawing practice, Gerner creates visual narrative projects, such as illustrated books and experimental comics, as well as drawings for the world of publishing and print media. Since the early 2000s, he has investigated printed images through graphic means: a hijacking process using ink and paint that allows a method of reframing or erasing. The book includes texts by Christophe Gallois and an interview with Gerner by Tom McCarthy.

Résumé:
As his firm’s most culturally significant buildings have been recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status, A+U features the humane, modern architecture of Alvar Aalto. The Finnish architect’s canon would join that of France’s Le Corbusier and the American Frank Lloyd Wright. His distinctive use of spatial vibrancy, the interaction between his works and the surrounding landscape, and the balance between materials and details — as the issue title suggests — are presented in photographs and narrative descriptions of 12 villas. This compilation is by Finnish architect and art historian Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen and architectural photographer Jari Jetsonen.

‘GRAM’ is a multiple research tool that combines graphic investigations with architectural explorations, where the publication is just a pretence and only the process matters. Its second edition portrays the methods and processes of six different practices – homu, Office U67, GAFPA, Ted’A, Gartnerfuglen, Motoproprio – through a series of emails. Each architecture office was asked to send a picture and a short description of its background, working process, philosophy, and so on. The narrative that resulted became the material for this publication. Its outcomes are both theoretical and practical, and open the doors to the endless thought processes behind the production of space.

Résumé:
This book arose from two observations: that building design in these first decades of the 21st century has come to accept and pursue some increasingly odd and disturbing trends; and that there seems to be insufficient architectural criticism that calls these trends to account. Its mission is to take up that neglected role with respect to some specific exemplars of these trends, with subjects coming primarily from the worlds of commercial and institutional architecture. The book takes a somewhat acerbic tone, to distance the narrative from the rather serious and high-minded approach to written material that the subject seems prey to.

Résumé:
From the chaos of the First World War to the ravages of the Second, from the Great Depression to the rise of consumer culture, artists we call "modern" faced the challenge of responding imaginatively to utterly new circumstances of life. Original thought, startling artistic techniques, and new attitudes to experimentation were required to produce exceptional and timely work. This volume guides the reader through the art of the modern world. Works of celebrated artists, from Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky to Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, and Yayoi Kusama, alongside a panoply of undervalued or less-known figures, populate this decade-by-decade narrative.

Résumé:
With subjects as delicate and personal as pleasure and love, Ghada Amer shows that it is possible to resist a conventional representation of women in art. Referencing pornography and other popular vehicles directed at a heterosexual male audience, Amer's embroidery-based work contrasts traditional female handicraft with mainstream popular culture. Going even further, several pictorial works refer to well-known artists such as Ingres and Picasso. Taking works from the canon as her starting point, the artist observes the idealizing narrative construction of Western art history, indulging in a conventional presentation of an image of women that satisfies a voyeuristic gaze.

LE SILENCE Une fiction gathers a corpus of contemporary works by 25 artists, ranging from Arman’s Accumulations to Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographs, and together they present a world that is both strange and familiar, what curator Simone Menegoi refers to as “the story of a planet that has become uninhabitable for reasons unknown….” Part scientific experiment, part fictional narrative, the effect of these traces that our civilisation leaves behind is one of a reversal of history, as if the works between the pages, artifacts of our contemporary era, are being observed through the eyes of an archaeologist or anthropologist from the future.

Résumé:
Ron Jude’s new book, Lick Creek Line , extends and amplifies his ongoing fascination with the vagaries of photographic empiricism, and the gray area between documentation and fiction. In a sequential narrative punctuated by contrasting moments of violence and beauty, Jude follows the rambling journey of a fur trapper, methodically checking his trap line in a remote area of Idaho in the Western United States. Through converging pictures of landscapes, architecture, an encroaching resort community, and the solitary, secretive process of trapping pine marten for their pelts, Lick Creek Line underscores the murky and culturally arbitrary nature of moral critique.
