Series 2, I’ve heard about and Hypnosis chamber, 2004-2006, relates to the conception of the urban structure “I’ve heard about”. The records contain algorithmically-generated images, renderings, pictures of models and exhibitions. There are also photographs of the contour crafting process, 3D models and animated renderings illustrating the construction process of the structure. The project is a conceptual, unbuilt project that is meant to be a habitable organism, an adaptive landscape in a constant state of evolution. By means of transitory scenarios in which the operational mode is entropy and uncertainty, it develops open algorithms based on growth scripts permeable not only to human expressions, but also to the most discrete data such as the chemical emissions (for example due to stress or anxiety) of those who inhabit it. The chemical information is harvested through nanoreceptors feeding the VIAB machine with information. This biostructure becomes the visible part of human contingencies and their negotiation in real time. The structure is conceptualized to be in constant construction through the VIAB machine which is also a constituent of the structure itself. It secretes fiber cement, shaping the landscape where it is located and through which it moves. It generates the reticular structure using a process modelled on contour crafting. The VIAB machine was developed with Robotics Research Lab of the University of Southern California and takes its name from the terms viability and variability. R&Sie(n) considers that due to its mode of emergence “I’ve heard about” fabrication is not subjugated to any political power. Hypnosis chamber is a component of “I’ve heard about”. It consists of an indoor chamber, which was realized as a full-scale sample constructed through automated machinery. The chamber is situated as a part of the whole urban structure presented by “I’ve heard about,” and its goal is to immerse the audience into the project, into a fictional environment only reachable by hypnosis. In this context, hypnosis is a way to help citizens escape from their social condition and experience the new condition of citizenship imagined in “I’ve heard about”, where democracy is re-evaluated as a process of self-determination. Both parts of the projects were shown in contemporary art museums. First at Musée d’art de la ville de Paris in Paris (2005), the Hypnotic chamber is permanently on view at Towada Art Center in Towanda, Japan. AP193.S4 contains a video orienting the project into François Roche theoretical stance, research as speculation, that can be summarize as the use of technological tools to take a critical and political position through esthetic in order to open new lines of thoughts. Project records document the design process for OCEAN North’s competition entry for the Jyväskylä Music and Arts Centre in 1997. The project was titled Terra Cultura by OCEAN North. The international competition called to create a multi-usage space that would include a venue for the symphonic orchestra, a music school, exhibition spaces, and the possibility to host a variety of small cultural events in the Finnish city of Jyväskylä. The proposed site is in the center of the town, across the street from the Jyväskylä city church and its park, and nearby buildings designed by Alvar Aalto. OCEAN North’s concept presents a topological surface as an extension of the surrounding urban scape with two masses that would host the formal functions of the building (concert hall, music school, exhibition halls). The two volumes, or raised blocks, are divided along a diagonal elevated space, which is the extension of the ground’s topological surface filled and dubbed “Liquid Flow Space” by the design team. In their interview with Greg Lynn, Johan Bettum and Kivi Sotamaa mentioned that the idea for Jyväskylä was that it was a cloud. Digital files, in particular, show the process to achieve the projected design. Drawings provide views of streamed particles and of resulting peels. They also include plans, elevations and axonometric views of the structure. Most files are raster or vector images, likely saved from CAD software. The Álvaro Siza fonds documents the architectural work of Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Records in this fonds document Siza’s projects from 1958-2012, including built and unbuilt designs. A collaborative project was established between the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), Fundação de Serralves, and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian to allow for international research and access to the archive. The archive is shared by the three institutions with each institution holding different projects while collaborating on the descriptive work and increasing the visibility of the archive. The holdings at both the Fundação de Serralves and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian focus on Siza’s Portuguese projects, while the portion of the archive held by the CCA mainly includes Siza’s projects abroad. All three institutions are committed to describing the archive and making it accessible for scholarly research. The processing of the Siza archive held by the CCA has been divided into four phases to allow for access to parts of the archive while still in process. For the first, second, and third phases, the processing archivist has described the projects from the fifties, sixties, and seventies, as well as projects for the IBA competition in Berlin, urban renewal projects in The Hague from the eighties, urban plans, museums, and individual houses between 1980 and 2000. The processing archivist has also described approximately 203 sketchbooks. Many of these sketchbooks include sketches related to architectural projects which were processed. The complete list of projects processed by the CCA to date can be found in series AP178.S1. The bulk of the Álvaro Siza fonds is arranged in Series AP178.S1, which contains documentation for over 200 of Siza’s architectural projects. Records in this archive are predominantly from 1970 to 2000. Series AP178.S1 mainly contains conceptual, design development, presentation, and working drawings. Also included are photographic materials, models, born digital records, and textual documentation, which include correspondence, project proposals, and notes. The architect’s creative process is captured in 282 sketchbooks arranged in Series AP178.S2. In all there are approximately 60 000 drawings, 3000 folders of textual documentation, 9.46 linear meters of photographs and negatives, 6,545 slides, 250 CD-ROMS, 101 floppy disks, and 371 models that document the architectural activities of Siza and his office. Among the drawings are sketches by Siza on various items, such as napkins, receipts, envelopes, or on the back of working drawings. The fonds contains several types of architectural projects including residential buildings, museums, universities, urban plans, offices, and city restorations. Of particular significance are the sketchbooks, comprised of sketches for architectural projects, Siza’s travels, people, and animals as well as notes and draft letters. This project series documents the construction of the Victoria and Grey Trust Company office in Stratford, Ontario from 1981-1984. The office identified the project number as 8116. This project consisted of an office building and computer center to be the new head office of Victoria and Grey Trust Company. Originally, the building was proposed as an eleven-storey office tower, but eventually the design was scaled back to five storeys with a basement and penthouse. Once construction commenced, the building became even shorter and included a parking garage. The building was located at 60 Erie Street. This project documents only the construction of this office building; the design was completed under a different project number assigned by the office (see project series AP018.S1.1980.PR14 in this fonds). The project is recorded through drawings, photographic materials and textual records dating from 1981-1984. The drawings are mostly reprographic copies arranged within the textual materials. There are some original detail drawings arranged within the textual materials. Some drawings were produced by architecture firm Routhwaite and Fairfield. The photographic materials show the construction progress of the project. The textual records consist of correspondence, conference and site reports, authority and detail documentation, financial documents, supplementary instructions, change orders and specifications.

Series 1, Water Flux and Scrambled Flat, 2002-2010, documents the conception and evolution of a project that was originally a farm building and later became a geology and glaciology museum and research center focused on the Swiss Alps. The project was never realized. R&Sie(n) conceptualized Scrambled Flat as an experimental farm. The project goal was to reconcile European Union’s agricultural regulations, imposing a separation between animal and human living, to the community of Évolène traditional way of living, contiguously with animals, benefiting from the resources they offer. As conceived, Scrambled Flat creates an environment where fluidity between the existence of the animals and the humans is materialized. The size of the form is also adapted from a typical local rural house and exploits the heat of the animals and the insulation of the hay. For this project, R&Sie(n) approached the mayor of the community with the design proposition. The mayor then called for a competition, while also changing the program to an ecology museum and research center illustrating the local effects of global warming and the thawing of the Alps. R&Sie(n) won the competition with Water Flux, a reinterpretation of Scrambled Flat. The project was intended to uncover and exorcise the anxieties of ecological disaster, and the principle of flux related to seasonal change and, more broadly, climate change. The firm designed rooms that reproduce the geological and meteorological environment of the high mountains making it visible and experimental, offering refrigerated spaces for art installations and scientific demonstrations. The concept was also to build with the use of new technologies such as digital modelling, point scanning, and computer numerical control (CNC), combined with ancient local knowledge of knocking on trees to decide which specific pines have the best wood for construction. The building is designed to be constructed with local lamellar wood milled by nearby CNC. The resulting parts would be used for the structure, the insulation, the waterproofing and both the interior and exterior finishes. The design includes a grille wrapping the building, reproducing the profile of traditional houses and enclosure and making it possible to hold the snow inside a typo-morphological imprint. Therefore, the transformable envelope of the building reacts to the rhythm of the seasons. In the winter, the structure would appear like a solid cut-out of ice and snow, with cavities similar to those found in glaciers. In the summer, it would resemble piles of stones used in these areas to make borders. A small pool would collect rainwater and supply it to an interior artificial snowmaking system designed for the gallery. Transformation of the water is an integral part of the design. The records contain images of plans, sections, details for the structure of the façade, renderings, plans of the engineered structure, and photographs documenting the conception of the models with the CNC machinery. The Rhino 3D modelling files are also part of the records along with AutoCAD models and a video documenting the process. The records contain two physical models: a smaller polymer model at 1:20 scale representing the whole structure of the building, and a larger 1:1 latch wood fragment representing detail of the structure in its integrality.

Description:
File documents the unexecuted project for the University Art Museum, Long Beach, California. Material in this file was produced between 1986 and 1988. California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), commissioned Eisenman/Robertson Architects to design an art museum adjacent to the main campus entrance. The 67,500-square-foot building was to comprise four galleries, a black-box theater, an auditorium, a cafe, conference rooms, a library, offices, preparation spaces, and storage vaults. The project, sited on a 23-acre arboretum, included landscaping; terraced sculpture courtyards, botanical gardens, and a two-acre pond. Eisenman linked the northern and southern parts of the arboretum by an elevated public walkway through the museum. Sets of drawings were presented on 8 and 30 April, 2 June, and 5 Aug. In the first design phase Eisenman explores the cartographic figures which form the basis of his artificial excavation when superposed: a series of sketches establishes the analogical relationships which fix the relative scales of the plans and produce the superpositions; another series contextualizes the superposed figures by placing them within the museum site (DR1987:0859:087-090). The second phase concerns the building; the working model shows the building carved out of a square pit, from which spring an oil derrick and a reconstruction of a recreational pier (Rainbow Pier, 1920s) used here as circulatory bridge (DR1987:0859:160). In the third phase the architect systematizes his archeological procedure by using five significant cartographic dates - 1849, 1889, 1949, 1989, 2049 - each corresponding to a specific superposition (see DR1987:0859:274-277). In the fourth phase, Eisenman simplifies the superposition of 2049 to a few iconic colour-coded forms: ranch (green), ranch house (blue), campus site (red), and water forms (river and pond) (gold). Material for the fourth phase includes three relief models, four presentation drawings, and a model (property of the CSULB) (relief models: DR1987:0859:001-003; drawings: DR1987:0859:004-008). File documents the unexecuted project for the University Art Museum, Long Beach, California. Material in this file was produced between 1986 and 1988. California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), commissioned Eisenman/Robertson Architects to design an art museum adjacent to the main campus entrance. The 67,500-square-foot building was to comprise four galleries, a black-box theater, an auditorium, a cafe, conference rooms, a library, offices, preparation spaces, and storage vaults. The project, sited on a 23-acre arboretum, included landscaping; terraced sculpture courtyards, botanical gardens, and a two-acre pond. Eisenman linked the northern and southern parts of the arboretum by an elevated public walkway through the museum. Sets of drawings were presented on 8 and 30 April, 2 June, and 5 Aug. In the first design phase Eisenman explores the cartographic figures which form the basis of his artificial excavation when superposed: a series of sketches establishes the analogical relationships which fix the relative scales of the plans and produce the superpositions; another series contextualizes the superposed figures by placing them within the museum site (DR1987:0859:087-090). The second phase concerns the building; the working model shows the building carved out of a square pit, from which spring an oil derrick and a reconstruction of a recreational pier (Rainbow Pier, 1920s) used here as circulatory bridge (DR1987:0859:160). In the third phase the architect systematizes his archeological procedure by using five significant cartographic dates - 1849, 1889, 1949, 1989, 2049 - each corresponding to a specific superposition (see DR1987:0859:274-277). In the fourth phase, Eisenman simplifies the superposition of 2049 to a few iconic colour-coded forms: ranch (green), ranch house (blue), campus site (red), and water forms (river and pond) (gold). Material for the fourth phase includes three relief models, four presentation drawings, and a model (property of the CSULB) (relief models: DR1987:0859:001-003; drawings: DR1987:0859:004-008).
