Résumé:
Mark Hinshaw has a proposition for Americans: Come out of your bunker, throw open the gate, and meet the neighborhood. True Urbanism, his passionate and highly readable appeal for re-engagement with city life, celebrates the growing number of people who reject sterile, paint-by-numbers subdivisions in favor of rich, vibrant, and often unpredictable urban neighborhoods. Through a series of fascinating case studies, this volume demonstrates how cities can create mixed-use districts dense enough to support a variety of locally owned businesses, lively street life, and cultural institutions, while also outlining design guidelines that allow for architectural creativity and regulations that promote housing development for every income and age level. Now that the dust has settled from the late-twentieth-century development boom, this vivid account of cities large and small will show communities how to shed their lingering antiurban tendencies in favor of embracing density as destiny.

N-ground or multi-ground (Superground & Underground) concept applied to Seoul, call us to a new qualitative development that responds to the possibility to superimpose a new dense floor in the old infrastructures. A new ReCitying Topos on, inside, in, where and through which to develop new/old programs, uses and activities of life and relationship. The singularity of Seoul is the capacity for the city to combine and manage all the new global urban paradigmatic challenges. Seoul new qualitative development responds does not intend to "continue" or "recreate" the traditional city. Nor impose or positionate, transforming it, built machines or objects but superimpose a new dense floor (container and articulator at the same time) in the old obsolete infrastructures, that becomes a new Re-Citying. The old infrastructures are revealed as the ideal spaces to support these new floors, real and virtual at time.

Résumé:
Is there an enduring bond between philosophical thought and the earth, or is philosophy’s task to escape the planetary horizon? And what is the connection between the empirical earth, the contingent material support of human thinking, and the abstract ‘world’ that is the condition for a ‘whole’ of thought? Real and imaginary geographies and cartographies have played a dual role in philosophy, serving both as governing metaphor and as ultimate grounding for philosophical thought; but urgent contemporary concerns introduce new problems for geophilosophy: planetary political, technological, military, and financial mutations have scrambled territorial formations, and scientific predictions now present us with the apocalyptic scenario of a planet without human thought. Collapse VI brings together philosophers, theorists, eco-critics, leading scientific experts in climate change, and artists whose work interrogates the link between philosophical thought, geography and cartography, in order to create a portrait of the present state of ‘planetary thought’.

Résumé:
Brutal concrete hotels, futurist TV towers, heroic statues of workers—this collection of Soviet-era postcards documents the uncompromising landscape of the Eastern Bloc through its buildings and monuments. These are interspersed with quotes from prominent figures of the time, which both support and confound the ideologies presented in the images. In contrast to the photographs of a ruined and abandoned Soviet empire we are accustomed to seeing today, the scenes depicted here publicize the bright future of communism: social housing blocks, palaces of culture and monuments to comradeship. Dating from the 1960s to the 1980s, they offer a nostalgic yet revealing insight into social and architectural values of the time, acting as a window through which we can examine cars, people and, of course, buildings. These postcards, sanctioned by the authorities, were intended to show the world what living in communism looked like.

Résumé:
"Design for Education" is a survey of modern learning environments -- from universities to primary schools. Introduced by Andrew Blum, a contributing editor at Metropolis, the book focuses on education's need for facilities that effectively support learning and accommodate growth and change over time. At a time when the education sector in developed countries is dealing with new budget realities, the book considers alternatives such as building repositioning and multipurpose, 24/7 facilities. In high-growth developing countries, it looks at the new campuses of international institutions. Seventeen case studies provide a detailed survey of the education sector's current range of facilities. For each project, the case studies document client intent, design response, key features, and highlights of actual or expected performance. Illustrated, the book serves as a guide to the state of the art of academic facilities for a range of pubic and private institutions.

Résumé:
Why did British industrial cities build art museums? By exploring the histories of the municipal art museums in Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, Transformative Beauty examines the underlying logic of the Victorian art museum movement. These museums attempted to create a space free from the moral and physical ugliness of industrial capitalism. Deeply engaged with the social criticism of John Ruskin, reformers created a new, prominent urban institution, a domesticated public space that not only aimed to provide refuge from the corrosive effects of industrial society but also provided a remarkably unified secular alternative to traditional religion. Woodson-Boulton raises provocative questions about the meaning and use of art in relation to artistic practice, urban development, social justice, education, and class. In today's context of global austerity and shrinking government support of public cultural institutions, this book is a timely consideration of arts policy and purposes in modern society.

Résumé:
The book "Art forms in nature" is a collection of prints, made by the scientist Ernst Haeckel, of an enormous variety of flora and fauna from the sea–including microscopic Radiolaria, starfish, and jelly fish. Since Prestel published it in 1998, the book has been a favorite with artists, designers, illustrators, and anyone who enjoys the wondrous forms of the natural world. Now paper engineer Maike Biederstaedt has transformed Haeckel’s transcendent work into a threedimensional book that allows readers to appreciate Haeckel’s vivid colors, exceptional precision, and fascination with patterns and geometry. This stunning book features seven pop-ups that allow readers to see nature’s brilliance the way that Haeckel did—as marvelous, mathematically based creations that support his theory of the unity of all living things. Certain to appeal to his huge variety of fans, this pop-up version of a timeless classic will be treasured for years to come.
