Résumé:
"The labyrinth of rooms" is a story about how the shape of architecture can change the way we think, and how the shape of our thoughts can change the way we see architecture. Stated otherwise, the story conceives of the human life as a series of settings that stage the coevolution of mental space and physical space. Human, the story’s protagonist, can be any one of us, and their journey from the first room to the last room is the journey of a lifetime: it has its ups and downs, moments of clarity and moments of confusion, but overall it bends toward greater knowledge and wisdom.

By any measure, Lebbeus Woods is one of the most original architects working today. His body of theoretical work focuses on buildings of crisis, whether marred by major earthquakes, suffering the effects of economic embargo, or damaged by war. Since the destruction of the World Trade Center, his designs have taken on new meaning and significance. In The Storm and the Fall, Woods brings his visions to a new depth, moving them from feverishly rendered drawings to three-dimensional space. The book focuses on two recent Woods installations - one at the Houghton Gallery at New York’s Cooper Union, the other at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris.

Résumé:
Workers are not doomed to be merely the victims of environmental devastation. As Lorenzo Feltrin shows, they can be key actors in preventing it. Because labour supports an unsustainable system of endless growth, it holds a central place in any strategy for our long-term survival. Bringing Italian workerist theory into dialogue with a range of traditions from dependency theory to ecofeminism, Feltrin examines the intersection of labour and nature across the globe. By addressing several urgent dimensions of the ecological crisis, such as automation, precarious employment, imperialism and social reproduction, he offers a new framework for understanding how labour struggles and environmental justice are intertwined.

Résumé:
If humanistic research consists of the generation of consensus positions, simple expression, summarized texts, or passable translations, then we have arrived at the place where AI is able to accomplish these different missions to a convincing degree. However, Laurent Dubreuil argues, such tasks do not, in any way, constitute the humanities. On the contrary, he posits, a maximalist take on scholarship would not focus on generation but on creation, as a subject and as an object. Dubreuil seizes the opportunity of what AI reveals about the meaning of humanistic inquiry to offer a path for the renewal of the humanities on transhistorical, transcultural, and transdisciplinary grounds.

Besides his work as a painter, designer, and prolific writer of picture books, the Italian artist Bruno Munari (1907–1998) devoted himself to children’s art education. Although it is difficult to grasp the scope of his wide-ranging activities, regardless of the genre, Munari’s works are based on a simple idea and are immediately appealing to anyone of any age. The itinerant Japanese exhibition ''Bruno Munari: The Man Who Made the Useless Machines'' looks back at his career, which began with the Italian Futurists, by examining approximately 300 works. This comprehensive monograph complements and broadens the exhibition’s overview of his visionary life and work.

Résumé:
The first European settlers saw America as a paradise regained. The continent seemed to offer a God-given opportunity to start again and build the perfect community. Those messianic days are gone. But as Alex Krieger argues in City on a Hill, any attempt at deep understanding of how the country has developed must recognize the persistent and dramatic consequences of utopian dreaming. Even as ideals have changed, idealism itself has for better and worse shaped our world of bricks and mortar, macadam, parks, and farmland. As he traces this uniquely American story from the Pilgrims to the “smart city,” Krieger delivers a striking new history of our built environment.

The first volume in the new ‘Plural’ series, this publication seeks to critically dissect the term “activism”, which today seems to have become a catchword for any woman’s empowerment through the arts, and reveal the diversity of practices and realities that it comprises. Presenting a range of critical insights, perspectives, and practices from artists, activists, and academics, it reflects on the role of feminist interventions in the field of contemporary art, the public sphere, and politics. In the process, it touches upon broader questions of cultural difference, history, class, economic standing, ecological issues, and sexual orientation, as well as the ways in which these intersect.

Résumé:
Why did early modern architects continue copying drawings long after the invention of print should have made such copying obsolete? Carolyn Yerkes answers that question in a fresh investigation into the status of architectural drawing in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Her book explores a vast network of manuscripts and drawings that each have information about ancient and modern buildings—including the Pantheon and Saint Peter’s—that is not known from any other sources. The drawings also show how the information was recorded, transferred, and analyzed by others. Yerkes examines the nature of architectural evidence to understand how Renaissance architects used images to explore structures, create biographies, and write history.
