Résumé:
A rising star in the Russian literary firmament Pelevin, winner of the 1993 Russian Booker Prize for short stories, has written a parody of life under Communism refracted through the prism of the Soviet space program. This clever parable about a young cosmonaut ordered to make the ultimate sacrifice? Killing himself after secretly piloting a supposedly unmanned lunar expedition? is sprinkled with throwaway gags, absurdist humor and wickedly ironic touches, as well as with the eerie beauty of space exploration. Obsessed with space travel since early childhood, Omon Krivomazov identifies with Ra, the ancient Egyptian falcon-headed sun god, a fixation that reflects his desire to escape the gray conformity of Soviet life and his yearning for a soul. Omon learns that more than 100 of his fellow cosmonauts have already been sacrificed as guinea pigs after taking part in supposedly automated, manless launches. Pelevin portrays the Russian space program as a vast propaganda enterprise, a distraction to paper over the tawdriness and fear of everyday life. Many allusions will be lost on American readers. And, in light of the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction state of contemporary Russian society, some of the Soviet-era satire seems oddly tame.

Résumé:
This groundbreaking exploration of appropriation and institutional critique assembles a wide variety of artists and mediums to offer new insight and make unprecedented connections. Exploring two parallel strands of post-conceptual art, Take It or Leave It highlights artists known for their use of appropriation and those who engage in "institutional critique." Focusing on American artists who emerged from the late 1970s to the early 1990s, the book highlights dynamic practices in a variety of media: from performance to photography; video to installation; painting to writing. Artists as wide-ranging in approach as Dara Birnbaum, Mark Dion, Robert Gober, Barbara Kruger, Zoe Leonard, Glenn Ligon, Adrian Piper, Stephen Prina, and Fred Wilson are examined within the context of the larger culture— from the political landscape to design strategies in advertising. Essays by curators Anne Ellegood and Johanna Burton as well as scholars George Baker, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Gavin Butt, and Darby English explore the historical and current terrain of appropriation and institutional critique, while pursuing topics including the downtown music scene in New York in the '80s, new strategies of painting, and theories of race after identity politics' heyday.

Résumé:
From 1845 to 1862, the Boston partnership of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes maintained the most celebrated photography studio in the United States. Taking as their subjects both the greatest personalities of the day and the natural spectacles of the American landscape, such as Niagara Falls, Southworth & Hawes elevated the new medium of daguerreotype photography to the level of art. Transcending the mere recording of factual detail, their daguerreotypes reflect a quintessentially American aesthetic and embody an emerging national culture and spirit. "Young America" features full-scale color reproductions of all plates in the exhibition as well as 2,000 additional black-and-white illustrations. It includes a critical analysis of the historical and cultural importance of the work of Southworth & Hawes, with original texts by Brian Wallis, ICP Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator, and Grant Romer, Director of the Advanced Program in Photography Conservation at George Eastman House, among other scholars. Appendices include a chronology, an annotated bibliography, an exploration of the daguerreotype process, brief biographies of the sitters, and a Southworth & Hawes family genealogy, making the catalogue an invaluable resource for researchers as well as general readers. The book includes an annotated bibliography, exhibition checklist and chronology.

Available in dvd format only.2003, USA, 116 minutes. "My architect" is a tale of love and art, betrayal and forgiveness - in which the illegitimate son of a legendary artist undertakes a five-year, worldwide exploration to understand his long-dead father. Louis I. Kahn, who died in 1974, is considered by many architectural historians to have been the most important architect of the second half of the twentieth century. A Jewish immigrant who overcame poverty and the effects of a devastating childhood accident, Kahn created a handful of intensely powerful and spiritual buildings - geometric compositions of brick, concrete and light - which, in the words of one critic, 'change your life.' While Kahn's artistic legacy was an uncompromising search for truth and clarity, his personal life was filled with secrets and chaos: He died, bankrupt and unidentified, in the men's room in Penn Station, New York, leaving behind three families - one with his wife of many years and two with women with whom he'd had long-term affairs. In My Architect, the child of one of these extra-marital relationships, Kahn's only son Nathaniel, sets out on an epic journey to reconcile the life and work of this mysterious, contradictory man.

Résumé:
Although the first universal color slide film came onto the market in 1935, it was reserved for the world of advertising, and as late as the 1980s it was still considered commercial, vulgar and unartistic. Despite this, from the 1960s onward, more and more photographers began to discover the creative possibilities of the medium. William Eggleston, whose career has spanned over five decades, not only substantially contributed to this paradigm shift; he also noticeably influenced many subsequent generations. Along with Saul Leiter, Evelyn Hofer and Stephen Shore, Eggleston was one of the first photographers to recognize the distinctive power of color and its unique capacity to create pictures that continuously challenge the everyday. He imbued banality with the uncanny and mysterious, investigating his immediate surroundings again and again—as if he were somehow suspicious of the contents of his freezer, the ketchup bottle on the diner counter, not to mention the guns that appear as if by chance in so many of his pictures. "Mystery of the ordinary" captures the full scope of Eggleston’s evolution and legacy: from the early black-and-white work of the late 1950s, in which we witness his discovery and exploration of themes and unconventional croppings, to some of his most iconic color images.

Résumé:
This book relates circular economy principles to housing design and construction and highlights how those principles can result in both monetary savings, positive environmental impact, and socio-ecological change. Chapters focus on three key circular economy principles and apply them to architectural construction and design, namely rethinking of the end-of-use phase of a building and the potential of design-for-disassembly; the role of digitization and data standardization in fostering evidence-based circular economy design decision-making; and presenting space as a resource to conserve, via exploration of the sharing economy and flexibility principles. Beyond waste management and material cycles, this book provides a holistic understanding of the opportunities across the building life cycle that can allow for sustainable and affordable circular housing. With case studies from 13 different countries, including but not limited to the Hammarby Sjöstad district in Sweden, the Circle House in Denmark, Benny Farm in Canada, VMD Prefabricated House in Mexico, and the Deep Performance Dwelling in China, authors pair theoretical frameworks with real-world examples. This will be a useful resource for upper-level students and academics of architecture, construction, and planning, especially those studying and researching housing design, building technology, green project management, and environmental design.
