Résumé:
The work of Swedish architect Bernt Nyberg is featured in this monographic issue, which focuses especially on his formative projects from the 1960s and ’70s. A huge endeavour in the making, the research, documentation, and production of materials for this publication have lasted four years. Given the relatively unknown nature of Nyberg’s work, the narratives herein are derived from direct sources, either through archival research or interviews with the architect’s surviving collaborators. Matthew Hall headed the investigation into Nyberg’s currently endangered body of work in Sweden, which ranges from homes and row houses to administrative, care, and maintenance facilities.

In this fourth volume, Atelier Bow-Wow delves into the window behavioural characteristics in nordic architecture, showing how climate and culture are strongly reflected in their windows. The works and influences of six architects are featured: Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz from Sweden, Alvar Aalto from Finland, and from Denmark, Kay Fisker, Arne Jacobsen and Jørn Utzon. After three years of research, the team visited about 235 works and measured 470 windows. 114 selected works are presented with photographs, detailed drawings, and analyses, examining the transformation of window technology and design, and the history and social issues of each country.

Since 1987 international exhibitions of contemporary art have taken place at Wanas in the south of Sweden. Artists exhibit their work in the park surrounding the medieval castle and in a barn. In this book, Marika Wachtmeister, director of the Wanas Foundation, describes her close collaboration with the artists as well as detailing the creative process from concept to completion. What is the process through which an idea becomes a work of art? This is the essential issue that Marika Wachtmeister addresses in her text on past exhibitions at Wanas. Art at Wanas provides a unique insight into the artistic process and contemporary art of today. In Swedish and English.

Résumé:
The internationally active office White Arkitekter is dedicated to the renewable material wood and ecologically and socially sustainable architecture. In 2016, they designed a 20-storey building in Skellefteå in Sweden that will be one of the world’s tallest timber high-rise structures. Sara Kulturhus – a new cultural centre right in the core of the city combining theatre, museum, art gallery, public library, conference centre and hotel – opens this year. The building, designed to reduce embodied as well as operational carbon emissions, is mainly made of wood grown in the regional boreal forests. Solar panels and efficient energy systems further contribute to minimising the project's climate footprint.

Résumé:
Material objects—things made, used, and treasured—tell the story of a people and place. So it is for the Indigenous Sámi living in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, whose story unfolds across borders and centuries, in museums and private collections. The objects created by the Sámi for daily and ceremonial use were purchased and taken by Scandinavians and foreign travelers in Lapland from the seventeenth century to the present, and the collections described in ''From Lapland to Sápmi'' map a complex history that is gradually shifting to a renaissance of Sámi culture and craft, along with the return of many historical objects to Sápmi, the Sámi homeland.

Résumé:
Architecture has an undeniable role within the incarceration systems that shape and control the lives of millions of people twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. While some architects have pioneered new approaches to the design of detention and correction facilities, others have questioned the very ethics of prison design. As the number of prisons in the United States has more than tripled over the past forty years, and nations such as Sweden are actually faced with the challenge of closing and repurposing correctional facilities no longer deemed necessary, now is the time to critically examine an often overlooked architectural typology : prisons.
