Résumé:
This publication is the brainchild of Viviane Sassen and Emanuele Coccia. The photographer and the philosopher—both leading figures in their fields—weaved together images and words, engaging in a fruitful dialogue deeply rooted in the Champagne terroir and the inspiring relationship Maison Perrier-Jouët entertains with art and nature. A series of 80 photographs and an essay intersect and collide, creating a space where the creativity of matter throughout all living things can be marveled at anew. Pictures mix and match with ideas, the history of planet Earth encounters that of artistic creation, and matter joins hands with the mind—producing an infinitely manifold work of art and establishing a modern alchemy where both vision and thought can be upended and renewed.

Material Matters: New Materials in Design explores the fascinating world of materials, surveying characteristics, properties and new applications of materials in diverse fields, from sustainable resources to medicine, architectural design to aeronautical engineering and interior design to 'haute-culture' and fashion. This publication profiles the materials developed in recent years with full page profiles and colorful illustrations, examples include Aerogel or 'frozen smoke'--used by NASA it is the lightest solid on earth at 95% air. Amongst the detailed profiles are texts that discuss the fusion between science, art and design in the creation of these substances and their importance within contemporary living, sustainability and expanding technologies. The book also includes the work of designers Marc Newson, Ross Lovegrove, Apple, NASA, Intel, Ron Arad and household names.

Résumé:
Most consumer products come primarily from the Pearl River Delta, the "factory of the world" with the largest industrial region on earth. The delta has attracted millions of poor rural residents to settle in factory towns in hopes for a better life. Factory Towns of South China opens a window on these walled compounds, exposing the gritty establishments, crowded dormitories and monotonous labor carried out by workers. Some function as self-contained cities, with their own fire brigade, hospital, bank, TV station and as many as half a million workers living within the compounds. Other factories are scattered in larger villages to mask their existence and evade governmental crackdowns on the production of fake consumer goods and illegal casino machines.

In light of the current political crisis around climate change, what can architecture possibly contribute towards a new planetary imaginary of our contemporary environment beyond environmentalism and technological determinism? Instead of conceptualizing the idea of the environment as purely natural and in need of protection, as solely a problem that needs to be managed, or merely as the Earth, which limits the scope with a scalar bias, can we speculate on architecture as a measure both to assess and to act upon the world? Architecture as Measure is an elaboration on this question, and on the disciplinary and cultural potentials of such a provocation. It positions climate change as a cultural and political idea that requires a renewed architectural environmental imagination.

Résumé:
John Ruskin was an influential English art critic and social thinker of the Victorian era, who famously argued that the principal concern of the artist is “truth to nature.” For Ruskin, this truth entailed more than merely adept technical representation, but rather, should depict the natural world as mankind experiences it, with all the sensations of both beauty and terror it elicits. Today, in a world overwhelmed by industrial development and environmental uncertainty, contemporary artists are discovering new beauties and terrors associated with nature, invoking a sense of the sublime that is uniquely modern. "Landscapes after Ruskin" explores how a joyful experience of nature is now mixed with a particular dread as the earth and its atmosphere are increasingly touched by human activity.

Résumé:
Long after the demise of humankind, birds roam freely around the Moon complete with fruitful trees, sophisticated fungal networks, and an enviable socialist order. The universal worm feeds all, there are no weekends, and economics is as fantastical a study as unicorn psychology. No concept of money or wealth plagues the thoughts of these free-minded birds. Instead, there are angsty teens who form bands to show off their best bird song and other youngsters who yearn to become clothing designers even though clothes are only necessary during war. (The truly honorable professions for most birds are historian or librarian.) These birds are free to crush on hot pelicans and live their best lives until a crash-landed human from Earth threatens to change everything.

Résumé:
This volume explores the quintessentially modernist material that is steel—not for the heroic structural innovations it facilitated but for a deeper understanding of the role it played in the steady change of the earth. Focusing on the formative years of the architectural steel economy and on the corporate history of German steel titans Krupp and Thyssen, the author investigates the ecological interrelationship of artificial and natural habitats, mediated by steel. He traces steel through six distinct phases: birth, formation, display, dispersal, construction, and return. By following the life of steel from the collection of raw minerals to the distribution and disposal of finished products, Christensen challenges the traditional narrative that steel was simply the primary material responsible for architectural modernism.

Start with the fact that the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has in its collection a moon rock, brought to Earth in 1969 on Apollo 11. This book takes that artifact to the next step, asking a group of artists and writers whether perhaps the museum should be planning a branch on the moon itself in the future. This thought-provoking little book riffs on the themes of space travel and colonization, with texts on site-specificity, history, space law and its global implications. Also included is a list of almost 800 songs which have the word "moon" in their title. In a world where eager buyers trade "moon lots" on the internet, is the whole idea of a moon museum so far fetched?

Résumé:
Today we are witnessing a renewed enthusiasm for space exploration, with scientific expeditions, satellite launches, and the emergence of space tourism pushing us to reconsider our relationship with our planet. Other Space Odysseys has nothing to do with Space Architecture or architecture in outer space. It is not a celebration of high-tech architecture and imagery or extreme physical and mental conditions. Instead, this book proposes a letting go of architecture understood as the production of -material goods in favour of architecture as the production of ideas. How can thinking about space lead to fresh perspectives on earth? Greg Lynn, Michael Maltzan and Alessandro Poli present different avenues for approaching this question. Their odysseys, real and virtual, ultimately promise a rediscovery of our own world.
