Résumé:
More high-rise residential buildings have been built in the last two decades than at any other time before. Even in Europe, where historically a typical city’s most prominent vertical accents came from chimneys and church steeples, towering buildings are increasingly shaping the urban landscape. In Vertical Europe, Andrea Glauser looks at new architectural trends in London, Paris, and Vienna, as well as the promises, desires, and fears associated with them in the minds of these cities’ residents. Her book is the first full-length sociological examination of the recent skyward growth in urban Europe, bringing together debates on high-rise architecture from fields including urban planning, geography, and art history. She contextualizes this vertical construction as an area wrought with tensions between these European cities’ desire to keep pace with global competition while still retaining the specific architectural qualities that have defined them for centuries.

Out of this crisis came a new generation that hoped to build a better future, influenced by visions of geodesic domes, walking cities and a meaningful connection with nature. In this work of cultural history, architect Douglas Murphy traces the lost archeology of the present day through the works of thinkers and designers such as Buckminster Fuller, the ecological pioneer Stewart Brand, the Archigram architects who envisioned the Plug-In City in the ’60s, as well as co-operatives in Vienna, communes in the Californian desert and protesters on the streets of Paris. In this mind-bending account of the last avant-garde, we see not just the source of our current problems but also some powerful alternative futures.

Résumé:
This illustrated volume offers a comprehensive overview of the work of Iraqi architect Hadid from her earliest works realized in 1979 to her most recent projects. "Zaha Hadid: Architecture" is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name at the MAK in Vienna. The book is the first to document the artist´s newest projects and presents an extensive overview over her oeuvre. It contains numerous color illustrations of designs, models and as yet mostly unpublished paintings by Hadid as well as photographs of buildings realised and under construction. Includes texts by Andreas Ruby and Patrik Schuhmacher. shedding profound light onto the architect´s oeuvre. Another special feature is the documentation of the installation "Ice-Storm" especially developed for the MAK exhibition, a "space experiment" with a surface area of 300 m2, a weight of eight tons and height of seven metres, providing the audience with a possibility for an active approach to Hadid´s radically new language of form and space.

Résumé:
The city at night is defined by light. A well-lit urban space can be inviting, giving visitors a sense of well-being and security. A successful nighttime lighting design can also give a city its own identity and accentuate certain architectural qualities. At the same time, an overabundance of light sources can result in light pollution and spatial confusion. In Light Zone City author Christa van Santen uses her many years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of lighting design to articulate basic planning rules for the outdoor lighting of buildings, traffic routes, and squares. In preparation for this guide to urban lighting design, she visited ten European cities—including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, Budapest, Vienna, and Amsterdam—with different urban conditions. Light Zone City presents different planning and design tasks systematically and uses each to illustrate specific solutions. Van Santen also explains new artificial lighting systems and outdoor lamps through numerous examples.

Résumé:
The years around 1700 were marked by transformations in European and colonial capital cities. This era saw the creation not only of palatial complexes and urban spaces appropriate to autocratic power, but also of essential infrastructure such as roads, ports, and fortifications. In addition, many of the civic structures and background buildings that form the familiar urban images of the eighteenth century date from this period. In all of this activity, architects and architectural ideas, formed mostly in Italy and influenced by the baroque architecture of Rome, especially the late works of Francesco Borromini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, played a central role. Twelve contributors provide a comprehensive look at the design, renewal, and expansion of capitals and countries including Naples, Rome, Vienna, Stockholm, Saint Petersburg, England, Amsterdam, Cádiz, Lisbon, Quebec City, and Lima. The result is a fascinating cross section that allows a comparative reading of baroque architecture: from country to country, from region to region, and from the Old World to the New.

Résumé:
Associates since 1987, the Austrian architects Florian Riegler and Roger Riewe, with their professional practice in Graz and Cologne, tackle their projects in a subtle and practical way, renouncing formal authorship as the motor of the design process. Their buildings respond to the environment and to the cultural baggage of society without wishing to offer the spectator a stunning form with pre-existing symbolic meanings. Quite the opposite, in fact: Riegler Riewe’s buildings reveal themselves to be places in which the user has a highly active role in the definition and perception of the spaces. This number of the magazine 2G demonstrates how their planning strategies enable them to readily tackle buildings of an ever-increasing size and complexity, from transport infrastructures such as the rail stations in Innsbruck and Vienna or the airports in Graz and Hamburg, taking in educational buildings like the Computer and Electronics Institutes of the University of Graz, complex residential projects and the football stadium in Cologne.

Résumé:
This sumptuously illustrated volume presents over 180 outstanding Viennese silver objects representing the period from Neoclassicism to the Wiener Werkstätte. Comparing early eighteenth-century works with examples of twentieth-century design and architecture, it offers a fascinating look at Vienna's contribution to the development of modern decorative arts. The authors demonstrate how the roots of modern design go back further than is generally assumed. Achieving remarkable clarity and formal reduction, Viennese Biedermeier designers created everyday objects of silver with astonishingly straightforward and purposeful forms that remain as progressive as ever today. In turn-of-the-century Vienna, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser drew inspiration from the intellectual legacy of the period in their designs for the Wiener Werkstätte. Many of the ideas introduced by the Viennese avant-garde were later expressed in such movements as the Bauhaus and De Stijl. By examining this history in all its complexity, the book traces the development of the vocabulary for contemporary design.

Résumé:
Showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's architecture and design collection, "Objects of Design" features a wide variety of industrial and domestic artifacts by great designers of the modern period, from early masters such as Hector Guimard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Josef Hoffmann to contemporary practitioners including Droog Design, Ettore Sottsas, Gaetano Pesce, Hella Jongerius and others. Some of the objects represent turn-of-the-century designs of the Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement; others are Bauhaus and de Stijl explorations; still others show Charles and Ray Eames and other American designers of the second half of the 20th century; representations of the Italian design revolutions; and contemporary manifestations of familiar genres using radical new materials and techniques of manufacture. The book's 360 colour plates not only reveal the range of aesthetic viewpoints in design since the late 19th century but together trace the historical development of MOMA's celebrated design collection.
