Résumé:
EUROPAN, founded in 1989, and supported by thirteen countries in the European Union, runs a competition every two years and invites young architects to submit innovative and experimental models in urban development. The 2019 EUROPAN competition focused on the topic productive cities and involved more than nine hundred planning teams from all over Europe, who prepared proposals for forty-seven towns. This book features the twelve winning submissions to the 2019 edition for the Austrian cities Graz, Innsbruck, Villach, Weiz, and Vienna. They are presented in impeccable detail through photos, drawings, and visualizations, along textual commentary. The projects focus on architectural and urban planning interventions and processes. They offer innovative concepts for the use of public space, models for cross-functional use of space, and holistic solutions for sustainable construction. Taken as a whole, the book is a rich source of trendsetting ideas about our future cities and the development of a new urban lifestyle.

Résumé:
Adolf Loos held that a building should have a soberly discreet exterior, reserving all its riches for its interior. Given that, any real appreciation of the spatial complexity of the work of one of the most misunderstood architects of the twentieth century requires engagement with his interiors, which this book does, brilliantly. In marked contrast to his contemporaries in the Vienna Secession, who designed their spaces down to the smallest detail, Loos presented himself as a “professor of interior design,” perfectly willing to adapt to the habits and tastes of his clients, inviting them to embrace their own tastelessness rather than defer to the discernment of an “aesthete” architect. Together with the future occupant, he designed welcoming interiors whose warmth came from the effective use of quality materials and the creation of a flowing continuity articulated by the furnishings. What Loos created thereby was not merely architecture, but a new culture of living.

Résumé:
The Austrian sociologist Otto Neurath (1882-1945) was one of the seminal figures of the 20th-century Modern Movement. Member of the Vienna Circle, Founder of the Museum of Society and Economy, inventor of the famous ISOTYPE pictorial system, and champion of the Unity of Science movement, Neurath's lifelong identification with collectivity and the concept of the global polis put him in contact with the leading intellectuals, architects and artists of his time, from Adolf Loos to Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, from Sigfried Giedion to Le Corbusier, from graphic designer Gerd Arntz to architect and urban designer Cornelis van Eesteren. This book traces Neurath's global understanding of the modern metropolis as a global polis, representing an idea about collectivity premised on cultural and linguistic universality. Although much attention has been given to Neurath's achievements in the field of graphic design and philosophy, he has never been treated in the context of urbanism and architecture.

Résumé:
With Josef Frank (1885–1967), the catalogue for the exhibition in the MAK, Vienna, focuses on one of the most important Austrian architects of the 20th century. In addition to his groundbreaking architectural oeuvre, the discussion considers Frank as an extremely productive designer who, although sceptical and a prominent cultural critic, must be thanked for his many important stimuli to international design that are still valid today. As an architect and designer who is still "contemporary" to this day, Frank was known for his pragmatic design approach, and pleaded for "normal" – but not at all normative – architecture and design. For Frank, the qualities of social experience were more important than formal aspects; his interiors and utilitarian articles were primarily intended to serve the comfort of the user. Josef Frank’s ideas of an uncontrived and unpretentious utilitarian expedience, which was focused on an independent, free, enlightened housing and living culture beyond all stylistic dogmas and fashionable conventions, is more topical today than ever.

Résumé:
With rapid increases in urban populations, there is an urgent need to transform our world's cities in keeping with ecological imperatives and democratic principles. A growing worldwide citizen movement is attempting to challenge bureaucratic administrations and replace the politics of fear with neighborhood power, direct democracy, and solidarity. They believe that threats of capitalism, totalitarianism, and climate change require imaginative political resistance rooted where they live. Combining political theory, philosophy, history, and intimate narrative, ''Take the city!'' presents an expansive view of municipalist movements around the world. With over twenty contributors, including David Harvey, this anthology provides crucial insights into the challenges ahead by looking at and beyond municipal electoral politics. Stories of diverse regions and issues illuminate the nuances of municipalist movements of the past and present, providing a roadmap of the fight for our future. From Seattle to Kurdistan, Burlington to Oaxaca, Barcelona to Mississippi, and Vienna to Montreal, contributors carefully consider the intertwined questions concerning current crises in housing, the environment, democracy, and capitalism.

Résumé:
This exhibition catalog explores the remarkable theatrical designs of Italy’s influential Bibiena family in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For nearly a century, members of three generations of the Bibiena family were the most highly sought theater designers in Europe. Their elaborate stage designs were used for operas, festivals, and courtly performances across Europe, from their native Italy to cities as far afield as Vienna, Prague, Stockholm, St. Petersburg, and Lisbon. Beyond these performances, the distinctive Bibiena style survives through their remarkable drawings. "Architecture, theater, and fantasy" commemorates a group of Bibiena drawings from the collection of Jules Fisher, the Tony Award–winning lighting designer, gifted to the Morgan Library and Museum in New York. Accompanying the first US exhibition of these works in more than thirty years, these drawings demonstrate the range of the Bibienas’ output, from energetic sketches to detailed watercolors. Representations of imagined palace interiors and lavish illusionistic architecture illuminate the visual splendor of the Baroque period.

Based on the author’s artistic research on migration, contemporary urban experience, and sonic alienation, ''The nomadic listener'' is composed of a series of texts stemming from psychogeographic explorations of contemporary cities, including Copenhagen, Berlin, Kolkata, Vienna, Delhi, Hong Kong, Mumbai and New York, among others. Each text is an act of listening, where the author records his surrounding environment and attunes to the sonic fluctuations of movement and the passing of events. What surfaces is a collection of meditations on the occurrences of life movingly interwoven with memories, associations, desires and reflections. As readers we are brought into a tender map of contemporary urban experience, and the often lonely, surprising and random interactions found in traveling.''The nomadic listener'' includes parallel drawings based on the original audio recordings, and appear as ghostly renderings of the corresponding experiences. The recordings are published by the German label Gruenrekorder and accessed through a QR code included in the book.

Résumé:
Architect, planner, and arts advocate Alfred Preis (1911–1994) dedicated his many creative talents to his beloved, adopted home, Hawai‘i. Born to a Jewish family, raised, and educated in Vienna, Preis became an exile after escaping from Nazi-occupied Austria in 1939 and briefly being interned as an "enemy alien" when the United States entered World War II. Preis emerged as one of Hawai‘i’s leading modern architects in the 1950s and 1960s. His new, regionalist vision for architecture and planning were specific to the Hawaiian context, its people, its tropical climate, and its stunning landscape. Preis’s crowning achievement was his design for the famed USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in 1962. This is the first publication to examine Alfred Preis’s body of work in architecture, which spans from 1939 to 1963, including not only several acclaimed public projects but also illustrating the transition from a European modern language into a regional modernism, unifying both cultures in distinct and pioneering ways.

Housing Density Housing construction for the greatest number is an indicator of the social character of a society. Most people want to live in a single-family house. Is it possible to realize the qualities of single-family housing in high-density construction? Almost 400 students of the Vienna University of Technology worked on this topic in the course of a design studio and – supervised by fourteen renowned Austrian architects – developed housing construction projects of various densities and environments. Selected works indicate the direction, but also the limits (of growth). With contributions by Silvia Boday, Marlies Breuss, Eva Ceška, Maria Flöckner, Susanne Fritzer, Katharina Fröch, Kinayeh Geiswinkler-Aziz, Gerda Maria Gerner, Feria Gharakhanzadeh, Adele Gindlstrasser, Ulrike Hausdorf, Franziska Orso, Ursula Schneider and Martina Schöberl. Two interviews with Harry Glück and Roland Rainer, conducted by Gerhard Steixner and Maria Welzig, introduce this topic to the reader by documenting contrasting concepts of horizontal and vertical densification in housing construction.

Résumé:
One of Austria’s most influential architects, Otto Wagner (1841-1918) played a key role in modernizing urban architecture. Forming an approach described as structural rationalism, Wagner pioneered use of materials such as glass, steel, and especially aluminium. He was associated with the Viennese Succession, a group of artists and designers headed by Gustav Klimt that initiated a departure from the conservative style of the Viennese Künstlerhaus. Among Wagner’s most important buildings are the Vienna Postsparkassenamt (Postal Savings building) and the Steinhof Church. Part of Taschen's Basic Architecture series. Each title in the series contains approximately 120 images, including photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans. Introductory essays explore the architect’s life and work, touching on family and background as well as collaborations with other architects. The body presents the most important works in chronological order, with descriptions of client and/or architect wishes, construction problems (why some projects were never executed), and resolutions. The appendix includes a list of complete or selected works, biography, bibliography and a map indicating the locations of the architect’s most famous buildings.
