Résumé:
The desire to have a home of one’s own is still the leading motivation for those who wish to construct or purchase buildings. Row and twin houses and ribbon developments constitute an affordable alternative to the single-family house, especially for young families. In times of tight budgets and rising investment costs, they represent a sensible alternative to the freestanding single-family house, particularly in terms of their use of open space. That they can also be appealing, high-quality houses is shown by the selected international examples in this new volume in the series In Detail. The projects presented are organized by building material and clearly documented with an area map, ground plans, and interrelated sections. The documentation of examples is supplemented by technical articles offering concrete support and assistance for the planner and building sponsor. In addition to analyzing the typology of the high-density, single-family house, the volume introduces different planning and financing models as well as energy-saving building methods and construction with prefabricated parts.

Résumé:
The professional landscape for design in social innovation has reached a critical moment. Designers are now acting as mediators, synthesizers and key contributors of social and environmental challenges at a strategic level. Organizations are recognizing that designers bring a unique set of abilities and methods for developing human-centered artifacts, services, environments and systems. Fueled in part by strong student demand, new graduate and undergraduate programs in social design are emerging across the nation. Graduates from these programs are entering the workforce with expanded skill sets and aspirations about their role(s) as creative individuals. This publication explores the new careers in the emergent field of design for social innovation with contributions from 84 leaders from across disciplines and sectors. These contributors encompass diverse points of view, stories and experiences about key issues, creating a multilayered picture of how this field is being shaped. The book addresses the spectrum of challenges and opportunities for those building careers in design for social innovation, and for the organizations looking to support those careers.

Résumé:
Boston played a crucial role in the development of American photography, including criticism, collecting, and curating, in the second half of the twentieth century. This book accompanies a landmark exhibition at the DeCordova Museum that includes such important American artists as Berenice Abbott, Harry Callahan, Paul Caponigro, Marie Cosindas, Harold Edgerton, Nan Goldin, Jerome Liebling, Nicholas Nixon, Barbara Norfleet, Olivia Parker, Rosamond Purcell, Aaron Siskind, and Minor White. The period from 1955 to 1985 reflects photography's acceptance as an art form, the influence of modernism, and the coalescence of a unique constellation of educational institutions, museums, and technological development in the Boston area that directly influenced artistic options for photography. Minor White's arrival at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 to run the Center for Creative Photography and the Polaroid Corporation's innovative support of photographic art suggest how developments built upon one another to create a regional critical mass in photography. The book contains twenty-five color plates, sixty duotones, and essays by A. D. Coleman, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, and Kim Sichel.

Résumé:
The architect and theorist Walter Curt Behrendt (1884-1945) worked on public housing and urban development as a designer and administrator for the German government after World War I. From 1925 to 1926 he edited the journal "Die Form" for the German Werkbund and led an articulate and well-orchestrated campaign in support of the Modern Movement. A friend and colleague of Lewis Mumford, he immigrated in 1934 to the United States, where he taught courses on city planning and housing at Dartmouth College and the University of Buffalo. "The Victory of the New Building Style" (1927)—his principal theoretical work in German and the precursor to Modern Building, which he wrote in English—presents a revisionist conception of style that places equal emphasis on form and function. Behrendt calls for architects to return to basic geometries and to articulate explicitly the new social and economic realities. Now available in English for the first time, this incisive treatise boldly advocates international modernism to the general public. Introduction by Detlef Mertins and translation by Harry Francis Mallgrave

Résumé:
Craig Ellwood was one of the finest California architects of the postwar era. By the time he was thirty he had already contributed three of the seminal Case Study Houses and received the São Paulo Award for his Courtyard Apartments. Subsequently influenced by Mies, he went on to design a lengthy series of stark minimalist structures, peaking with the Pasadena Art Center. With the support of John Entenza, editor of the influential magazine Arts & Architecture, Ellwood was, until the late 1960s, widely considered to be one of the most innovative American architects of the period. This book documents all the Ellwood buildings that remain on the records, a total of some ninety structures. Its 600 illustrations include comprehensive archival photography (including Ellwood’s own pictures and others by Julius Shulman), original drawings, and, for those buildings that remain in good condition, recent images. Due to the loss of most of the original drawings, 80 floor plans have been redrawn for this publication, making this book as close a record of Ellwood’s complete works as is possible today.
