Résumé:
Counter Space examines the twentieth-century transformation of the kitchen through the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, featuring a wide variety of design objects, architectural plans, posters, archival photographs and artworks--ranging from the iconic Frankfurt Kitchen, mass-produced for German public housing estates in the aftermath of World War I, to an electric tea kettle, heat-resistant glass wares, and colorful plastics, such as Tupperware and Japanese artificial food. With an introductory essay by Juliet Kinchin, Curator in MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design, this volume is a lively exploration of the kitchen as a barometer of changing technology, aesthetics, and ideologies.

Résumé:
Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition "Ottoman architecture of the 16th century: mosques of Sinan. Drawings by Augusto Romano Burelli and Paola Gennaro", september-november 2008, Frankfurt, Deutsches Architekturmuseum. The architect (1489-1588) was a master mosque builder who employed perfect proportions to create astonishing lightness in architecture--especially in his gravity-defying cupolas. He is renowned for having borrowed Roman and Byzantine techniques in order to create something new in mosque design--centralized organisms of absolute space, unhindered by pillars or columns. This beautifully illustrated volume, which features stunning reconstructed architectural renderings and diagrams, is the first to fully analyze his method.

Résumé:
This catalogue of a travelling exhibition (Hannover, Basel, Frankfurt am Main) demonstrates that artists are able, past all doctrines of growth, to bring forth an artistic treatment of the concept of growth. They indicate lines of connection and dependencies which seem strange to us. Among these are the splendid Venetian Murano glass with which Tue Greenfort illustrates the growth of algae in the Adriatic, the ludicrous flooding of a McDonald’s restaurant, by means of which the Danish artist’s group Superflex alludes to the threatening growth in sea levels. Also works by Dirk Fleischmann, Sylvie Fleury, Mika Rottenberg, Julika Rudelius, Lois Weinberger, Franck Scurti, Dan Peterman and many others.

Résumé:
Urban gardening has become recently popular. We only have to think of the riverbanks restored to their natural state, the urban gardening and urban farming projects springing up all over the world, the green skyscrapers (prospective and actually built) such as, for instance, the utopian farmscrapers of Vincent Callebout, the conversion of former high rail lines into green recreation spaces, the meditation gardens of Piet Oudolf, and the vertical gardens of Patrick Blanc. These days, we feel close to greenery, just as we feel close to our pets. We tend and nurture the seeds and stalks, the leaves and flowers, the shrubs and grasses, the bushes and trees, with a matchless solicitude. These culturally coded natural phenomena also have therapeutic qualities, because they offer us self-determination and the possibility to share in social development. This is nothing less than the reintegration of the first, primal nature into the context of the conditions that have become ubiquitous today into the context of what has, today, become 'second nature'. For some people, such as the campaigners of 'Guerilla Gardening', these plants, wild and domestic, provide a way of criticizing the system; others, such as vertical planners of wall gardens like Ken Yeang, utopia-infatuated and bitten by the green bug, presumably see themselves as an avant-garde working in harmony with the system. Volker Fischer was deputy director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main for over ten years. From 1994 to 2012 he has built up a new design department at the Museum for Applied Arts in Frankfurt. At the same time, he taught on the history of architecture and design at the Hochschule fur Gestaltung in Offenbach.

Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897–2000) entered the modernist canon with her “Frankfurt Kitchen.” She is also considered a pioneer of social architecture, a women’s rights activist, and, last but not least, a heroine of the resistance to the Nazi dictatorship. In this book, available in English for the first time, recent research in the fields of art history, contemporary history, pedagogy, and gender studies provides a nuanced picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, whose estate is archived at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The volume explores her rich architectural oeuvre, her transnational experiences and professional networks, her political development as a Communist, and her current reception. It breaks through the mythology to present a rounded picture of Schütte-Lihotzky, an icon of architectural history.

Résumé:
When tourists become lost, overwhelmed, tired, inspired, bored, enlightened, confronted, hungry, upset or tipsy, when they get cheated or fall in love, perceptions change and surprising associations and experiences come to light. In trying to figure out a city, they are mostly investigating themselves. In this madcap tour through five important international cities, Martin Lorenz and one guest artist per city gave themselves 48 hours to experience their destination, to document it and create a visual diary without the use of computers. The resulting evidence reveals places and situations that could never get mentioned in the guidebooks, offering exhibitionistic glimpses into the personal lives of the reporters and the real energy of each city. This volume covers Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Berlin and New York.

Résumé:
Adapted from the lecture she delivered at the Institut für Kunstkritik, Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Ewa Lajer-Burcharth’s essay explores the dimension of self-reflexivity in the work of eighteenth-century French painter, Jean-Siméon Chardin. Focusing on the material aspects of Chardin’s practice, Lajer-Burcharth asks: In what ways were Chardin’s painterly procedures “his own,” and what were the implications of his possessive and personalized approach to the process of making? The author delves into these questions by examining a crucial moment in the artist’s career, when he, for reasons we can only speculate about, temporarily abandoned his still life practice and turned to painting genre scenes. The essay is joined by responses from Daniel Birnbaum and Isabelle Graw, followed by the author’s replies.

Résumé:
For Siegfried Kracauer, the urban ornament was not just an aspect of design; it was the medium through which city dwellers interpreted the metropolis itself. In "Ornaments of the metropolis", Henrik Reeh traces variations on the theme of the ornament in Kracauer's writings on urbanism, from his early journalism in Germany between the wars to his "sociobiography" of Jacques Offenbach in Paris. Kracauer (1889-1966), often associated with the Frankfurt School and the intellectual milieu of Walter Benjamin, is best known for his writings on cinema and the philosophy of history. Reeh examines Kracauer's lesser-known early work, much of it written for the trendsetting newspaper Frankfurter Zeitung in the 1920s and early 1930s, and analyzes Kracauer's continuing reflections on modern urban life, through the pivotal idea of ornament. Kracauer deciphers the subjective experience of the city by viewing fragments of the city as dynamic ornaments; an employment exchange, a day shelter for the homeless, a movie theater, and an amusement park become urban microcosms. Reeh focuses on three substantial works written by Kracauer before his emigration to the United States in 1940. In the early autobiographical novel "Ginster, written by himself", a young architect finds aesthetic pleasure in the ornamental forms that are largely unused in the profession of the time. The collection "Streets of Berlin and elsewhere", with many essays from Kracauer's years in Berlin, documents the subjectiveness of urban life. Finally, "Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of his time" shows how the superficial - in a sense, ornamental - milieu of the operetta evolved into a critical force during the Second Empire. Reeh argues that Kracauer's novel, essays, and historiography all suggest ways in which the subjective can reappropriate urban life. The book also includes a series of photographs by the author that reflect the ornamental experience of the metropolis in Paris, Frankfurt, and other cities.
