Résumé:
A mother stitches a few lines of prayer into a bedcover for her son serving in the Union army during the Civil War. A formerly enslaved African American woman creates a quilt populated by Biblical figures alongside celestial events. A quilted Lady Liberty, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln mark the resignation of Richard Nixon. These are just a few of the diverse and sometimes hidden stories of the American experience told by quilts and bedcovers from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Spanning more than 400 years, the 58 works of textile art in this book express the personal narratives of their makers and owners and connect to broader stories of global trade, immigration, industry, marginalization, and territorial and cultural expansion. Made by Americans of European, African, Native and Hispanic heritage, these quilts and bedcovers range from family heirlooms to acts of political protest, each with its own story to tell.

Résumé:
Walk down any street in Mexico, and you'll be greeted by images of soccer stars, mariachi singers, space ships, taxis, tortas, tequila, or any one of the colorful posters that shopkeepers, advertisers, designers, and artists have put up throughout their cities and towns. Sensacional: Mexican Street Graphics is a collection of these images that often define public space south of the border. The images collected here depict a vibrant and experimental visual culture. Advertising everything from sex clubs, wrestling arenas, and restaurants to dentist's offices, auto-body shops, locksmiths, and shoe-repair stores, these images provide an inspiring monument to the craft of vernacular design, and are as much a part of the streetscape as the buildings they cover. Following a foreword by renowned musician and artist David Byrne, and an introduction by design historian Steven Heller, Sensacional presents more than 300 full-color illustrations of Mexico's most animated street graphics.

Résumé:
Media theory has long overlooked the built environment and its communicative capacity: how built structures and spaces convey meaning through material embodiment and symbolization. "Architecture as communication" advances the idea that built environments function as media of communication. Using practice theory in conjunction with the concept of style, this book is anchored in three historical determinants: the quest for perfect proportion in buildings, the belief in architectural determinism, and the ongoing efforts within other media to influence how those who experience built environments understand them. Ross Eaman explores how houses, schools, places of worship, factories, office buildings, stores, malls, opera houses, plazas, and parks have meaning for people as subjective life-worlds. "Architecture as communication" proposes media theory that articulates the social construction of meaning as a unique way of understanding the built environment – one in which the users and observers of structures and spaces participate along with architects and designers.

Résumé:
Between the years 1950 and 1972, when Paris was in the twilight of its classical period, pilot and photographer Roger Henrard preserved the city he knew and loved from the seat of a single-engine American army surplus Piper Cub. Henrard used a high-speed plate camera to systematically document the city from its outskirts to its centre. His photographs show not only Paris's stations, museums, department stores, and housing projects but also its urban fabric and interconnections - the tightly knit medieval districts as well as the rectilinear geometry of the Haussmanian boulevards. "Above Paris" is Henrard's study of the urban landscape of Paris and its best-known monuments. Images, grouped by themes such as the course of the Seine, the main roads, the stations, and the neighborhoods of Paris give a clear overview of the city's layout. Maps at the beginning of each chapter orient the reader.

Résumé:
Along with the rise of Mussolini’s fascist regime, the interwar years in Italy also saw the widespread development of its modernist interior design and furnishing practices. While the regime’s politics were overtly manifest in monumental government architecture, ''Furnishing Fascism'' examines the subtler yet effective role of household goods and decor in the cultivation of Italy’s exclusionary sense of national identity. Presenting a fresh look at the work of various architects and designers, including iconic figures such as Gio Ponti and Carlo Enrico Rava, Ignacio G. Galán explores how seemingly neutral products of everyday life contributed to the propagation of fascist ideology. Through extensive promotion in popular magazines and department stores, on the film sets of Cinecittà Studios, and throughout the country’s colonial territories, Italy’s modernist design practices were part of a larger political project that aimed to produce a totalizing image of cultural hegemony.

Résumé:
Building in existing fabric conserves resources, saves energy, and reduces carbon emissions – good reasons to choose conversion over new build. Yet there is another, less tangible dimension: time. With additions and adaptations, patina and cracks, it leaves its mark and stores memories in the buildings. To carry these stories forward requires sensitivity to materials, spaces, and histories. Deciding what remains and what is replaced demands careful judgment. Some interventions are so discreet that only trained eyes notice them, often compared by architects to the restoration of a classic car. Others are more radical: ceiling panels titled and set diagonally into a room, or large atriums cut into the existing architecture. At times, we may need to rethink our ingrained aesthetics and ask whether materials with a problematic reputation – such as fibre cement panels (Eternit) – can still be used, or whether cut edges might be left uncovered.

Résumé:
Tokyo Listening examines how the sensory experience of the city informs how people listen to both music and everyday, ubiquitous sounds. Drawing on recent scholarship in the fields of sound studies, anthropology, and ethnomusicology and over fifteen years of ethnographic fieldwork in Japan, Lorraine Plourde traces the linkages between sound and urban space. She examines listening cultures via four main ethnographic sites in Tokyo?an experimental music venue, classical music cafes, office workspaces, and department stores?looking specifically at how such auditory sensibilities are cultivated. The book brings together two different types of spaces into the same frame of reference: places people go to specifically for the music, and spaces where the music comes to them. Tokyo Listening examines the sensory experience of urban listening as a planned and multifaceted dimension of everyday city life, ultimately exploring the relationship between sound, comfort, happiness, and productivity.

Résumé:
The British architect David Chipperfield (born 1953) founded his eponymous design firm in 1985, and has been an exemplary exponent of modernism and its ongoing relevance ever since. The confident elegance of his buildings extends a legacy of discreet craftsmanship and clarity learned from early 20th-century architecture: "If you look at a building by Mies van der Rohe," he observes, "it might look very simple, but up close, the sheer quality of construction, materials and thought are inspirational.""David Chipperfield Architects: Monograph Vol. II" brings the architect's most comprehensive monograph back into print in an updated edition that features 32 new works by Chipperfield's firm. More than 60 projects are represented in this volume, from Chipperfield's early buildings in Japan to the many major museums and galleries, residential and commercial developments, flagship stores and educational buildings built by the practice around the world today.
