Résumé:
The desert is a huge paradox. Beneath its outward appearance of immensity and silence, are the sounds of various experiments, mysteries, and utopias. The setting of outrageous true histories, entertainment oases founded on consumerism and play, and the secret staging of military power, the desert is far from empty. Instead, it is full of activity: unexpected, uninhibited, and excessive. Not subject to barriers and seemingly free of the formal, ideological or cultural ties of global society, the desert cultivates alternate architectures, urbanisms, and built phenomena. Through photographs, essays, and history, this book emerges as an exploration of some of these phenomena and the protagonists that made them possible.

Résumé:
Harold Sculthorpe was Principal Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences at North East Surrey College of Technology but on his retirement left the confines of the lecture room for the freedom of the open air, determined to make every Monday a Sunday. A life long concern with the constraints placed on the individual by a host of bureaucratic bodies, and not least the State, then found expression in these short essays on the problems encountered when walking in the countryside as the military, large landowners, factory farmers and more recently the water companies conjoin to try to exclude walkers from much of the land for their own nefarious purposes.

Résumé:
In this revised edition of his definitive study, Robert Kronenbourg examines the development of the moveable building from prehistory to the present day, including a entirely new chapter on the influence that new technologies have on the subject. From familiar vernacular models such as the tent, mobile home and houseboat, to developments in military and construction engineering, all aspects of portable architecture are considered. Kronenbourg makes comparisons between current, commercially available products and the work of innovative designers. He explores the philosophical and technological issues raised by contemporary, experimental and futuristic prototypes, and examines the suitability to purpose of portable building solutions in shelter after disaster situations.

Résumé:
A small town in the vast desert of West Texas, Marfa attracts visitors from around the world to its art foundations and galleries, film and music festivals, and design and architecture symposiums. While newcomers sometimes see it as "another Santa Fe," long-time residents often take a bemused, even disapproving attitude toward the changes that Marfa has undergone since artist Donald Judd came to town in the 1970s and began creating spaces for his own and other artists' work. They remember when ranching and the military formed the basis of the town's economy, even as they acknowledge that tourist dollars are now essential to Marfa's sustainability.

Résumé:
Since embarking on her professional career as a photographer in 1975, Mao Ishikawas birthplace of Okinawa has also been a reliable and constant theme in her work, which avoids simple classification as documentary, or even autobiography. Hot Days in Okinawa revisits her debut series, when the 22-year-old Ishikawa went to work in a bar exclusive to foreigners primarily black members of the U.S. military. For two years she lived and captured familiar scenes of everyday life around her, portraying soldiers and women living furiously and vividly in Okinawa towards the end of the Vietnam War. A short text by Ishikawa accompanies the numerous black-and-white images.

Résumé:
Ancient Chinese architecture is not only a source of reference for modern Chinese design, it has also had an international influence and attracted global attention. Moreover, architectural remains in China reveal much about the history of this ancient civilisation. The palaces, gardens, temples, tombs and dwellings of the Chinese people reflect, for example, the military achievements of the Qin emperor, the spirit of the Tang Dynasty, the palace intrigues of the Ming Dynasty, the diversity of Chinese culture through the ages and the skill of countless generations of craftsmen and labourers. This publication provides an accessible, illustrated introduction to this essential part of China's cultural heritage.

Résumé:
Hong Kong’s border with Shenzhen is dissolving. By 2047, the border will likely not exist. Integration with the Mainland will remove distinctions created by the "One Country Two Systems" policy. The uncertainty surrounding what will happen has created anxiety relating to law, identity, freedom of speech, and voting rights. Caught in this debate is the Frontier Closed Area, a 1951 undeveloped buffer zone of estuaries, fish farms, forests, villages and military posts. In contrast, Shenzhen, has exploded into a metropolis of 15 million plus. The book explores this unique border ecology. Design strategies inserted within this ecology promote alternate forms of development. The example widens the discourse on borders to raise critical issues that impact the contemporary city.

"The Japanese photobook", 1912–1990 illustrates the development of photography as seen in photo publications in Japan--from the early influence of European and American pictorialism, the German Bauhaus and imperial military propaganda to the complete collapse and destruction of the country in 1945. Then followed a new beginning: with the unique self-determination of a young generation of photographers and visual artists highlighted by the Provoke style--an experimental Japanese photography magazine that had a profound effect on the medium in the 1970s and ‘80s--as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early ‘70s, the signature Japanese photobook, as we have come to know it, was born.

Résumé:
In this collection of essays, Ackerman offers insight into his formation and development as a scholar, as well as reflections on a range of topics. Concise, lucid, and original, this book presents deep syntheses alongside innovative approaches and a broadening geographical and chronological reach. Ackerman’s enduring fascination with architecture was one unforeseen consequence of his military service in World War II, and the collection includes a revealing account of his part in the liberation of Milan as a soldier in the Fifth American Regiment. These essays represent a unique, personal journey—from the Italian Renaissance to the classical architecture of India and the work of Frank Gehry at the new museum of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Résumé:
In "Atmospheric Things" Derek P. McCormack explores how atmospheres are imagined, understood, and experienced through experiments with a deceptively simple object: the balloon. Since the invention of balloon flight in the late eighteenth century, balloons have drawn crowds at fairs and expositions, inspired the visions of artists and writers, and driven technological development from meteorology to military surveillance. By foregrounding the distinctive properties of the balloon, McCormack reveals its remarkable capacity to disclose the affective and meteorological dimensions of atmospheres. Drawing together different senses of the object, the elements, and experience, McCormack uses the balloon to show how practices and technologies of envelopment allow atmospheres to be generated, made meaningful, and modified.
