Résumé:
The only residence built by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in America, Farnsworth House (1948-51) exemplifies the central tenet both of the International Style, be inverting the conventions of traditional architecture, and of Mies' own design philosophy. Commissioned by Dr. Edith Farnsworth to build a weekend retreat, Mies designed the house as an envelope of glass and steel floating over the Illinois Fox River flood plain. Its spare interior was intended for a simpler, cleaner, and healthier lifestyle. Even before its completion, however, architect and client had fallen out over expenses and practical problems with the house, and by the time Lord Palumbo bought it in 1972, Farnsworth had changed many of the interior elements dictated so precisely by Mies. Following a ruinous flood in 1996, the house has been faithfully reconstructed to its original conception. Richly illustrated with detailed drawings and specially commissioned photography, this latest book in an award winning series provides an in depth account of this icon of twentieth century Modernist architecture.

Résumé:
Mies van der Rohe established himself as the visionary architect of New Building, a modernist architectural movement that emphasized geometric form. An architectural approach also permeated the fine art of the time, while a scientific understanding of nature influenced art and architecture equally. This book and exhibition are among the first to bring sculpture and nature together in an examination of Mies van der Rohe’s work. Highlighting eight sculptures by Lehmbruck and seven by Kolbe, the volume features more than one hundred color illustrations.

Résumé:
The Tugendhat House in Brno (Czech Republic) was named by UNESCO in 2001 as one of the most important buildings of modern architecture and as a World Heritage Site. Mies van der Rohe designed and built it in 1928-1930 and it is beyond any doubt one of the pinnacles in his career. The authors describe the complex aspects of this house: personal, historical, art historical, architecture theoretical and restoration scientific ones. Most recent additions include personal reminiscences, photography experiments by Fritz Tugendhat and previously unpublished footage from the family mansion, the house's history after 1997, the conservation of scientifically important materiality of the house and comments on the methodology and techniques of restoration in 2010-2012.

In 1952-1953 Mies van der Rohe built the Crown Hall in Chicago: it was to house the College of Architecture on Illinois' Institute of Technology campus. A spectacular building constructed out of steel and glass, it has no interior supports and the roof is suspended from four steel girders. In the Hall free-standing partitions subdivide the space, creating drawing rooms, a library and an exhibition room. The basement is used for offices and workshops. In Crown Hall, Mies van der Rohe's continual search for a clear expression of structure reached its pinnacle, and in this book this epochal building is presented in text and illustrations by Werner Blaser, who has worked together with Mies van der Rohe.
