Shifting away from an understanding of architecture as the construction of monumental masterpieces, the texts collected here assemble the narratives behind the public spaces, housing and social facilities in these two cities, where modern plans have proven unexpectedly resilient and adaptable over time. This perspective is reinforced through visual contributions by Yto Barrada and Takashi Homma—two photographers especially invested in capturing everyday urban life. In a world marked by decolonization and Cold War politics, Casablanca and Chandigarh appear simultaneously as exponents of and countercurrents to modernization and its development perspectives. The book’s three chapters set the context for reading Casablanca and Chandigarh as the results of nuanced, dynamic processes of international exchange driven by the engagement and expertise of a new class of design professionals. "The neoliberal city" presents an overview of the effect of these changes on today's cities. The term "neoliberalism" was originally used in reference to a set of practices that first-world institutions like the IMF and World Bank impose on third-world countries and cities. The support of unimpeded trade and individual freedoms and the discouragement of state regulation and social spending are the putative centerpieces of this vision. More and more, though, people have come to recognize that first-world cities are undergoing the same processes. In "The neoliberal city", Jason Hackworth argues that neoliberal policies are in fact having a profound effect on the nature and direction of urbanization in the United States and other wealthy countries, and that much can be learned from studying its effect. He explores the impact that neoliberalism has had on three aspects of urbanization in the United States: governance, urban form, and social movements. The American inner city is seen as a crucial battle zone for the wider neoliberal transition primarily because it embodies neoliberalism's antithesis, Keynesian egalitarian liberalism. Focusing on issues such as gentrification in New York City; public-housing policy in New York, Chicago, and Seattle; downtown redevelopment in Phoenix; and urban-landscape change in New Brunswick, N.J., Hackworth shows us how material and symbolic changes to institutions, neighborhoods, and entire urban regions can be traced in part to the rise of neoliberalism.

This book is not about bricks and adobe, nor about cladding with aluminum or glass, nor about the difference between natural and mechanical ventilation. While these are all important aspects of sustainable building, the real key is for the partners in the construction process--including the commissioning bodies--to consider early on the physical, social, and cultural environment in which they want to be accommodated. This first thinking stage can lead to the unearthing of surprising solutions that are considerably more sustainable than what has been the norm until now. Real estate is still too often thought of as a question of meeting the demand for floor space in square meters (or feet, depending)--and little else. Buildings that Last includes examples of studies into the construction of offices for 2040, when buildings will hopefully have an environmental impact that is 95% less than was the norm at the end of the last century. Today's top-scoring projects are also reviewed--the results show that we still have a long way to go in sustaining sustainable development.

''Genius Loci,'' meaning the protective spirit of a place, is embodied in the seven decade span of her work. Her landscape designs demonstrate her desire to create terrains that are less an interruption and more an amplification of what already exists on a site. Her training in modernist design and a desire to connect people with nature is immediately apparent in her landscapes. At a time when our relationship to the earth is of paramount importance, Oberlander’s projects reveal consistent and significant stewardship of the natural environment. Many of her designs—even those from 50 years ago—remain largely unchanged, testaments to her technical skill, research techniques, and judicious selection of flora. This bilingual book derives from an exhibition at the West Vancouver Art Museum, introduing projects by Oberlander, and presented in four sections devoted to playgrounds, social housing, public projects, and residential projects, showing photography of the places alongside her sketches, plans, and research proposals. The book includes contributions by Oberlander and the exhibition curators, Susan Herrington and Eva Matsuzaki.

Inspired by the rise of environmental psychology and increasing support for behavioral research after the Second World War, new initiatives at the federal, state, and local levels looked to influence the human psyche through form, or elicit desired behaviors with environmental incentives, implementing what Joy Knoblauch calls 'psychological functionalism.' Recruited by federal construction and research programs for institutional reform and expansion — which included hospitals, mental health centers, prisons, and public housing—architects theorized new ways to control behavior and make it more functional by exercising soft power, or power through persuasion, with their designs. In the 1960s – 1970s era of anti-institutional sentiment, they hoped to offer an enlightened, palatable, more humane solution to larger social problems related to health, mental health, justice, and security of the population by applying psychological expertise to institutional design. In turn, Knoblauch argues, architects gained new roles as researchers, organizers, and writers while theories of confinement, territory, and surveillance proliferated. From the targeted demolition of Mostar's Stari-Most Bridge in 1993 to the physical and social havoc caused by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, the history of cities is often a history of destruction and reconstruction. But what political and aesthetic criteria should guide us in the rebuilding of cities devastated by war and natural calamities? This publication points to the potential for architects to play important roles in post-war relief and reconstruction. Charlesworth suggests that architects and design professionals have a significant opportunity to assist peace-making and reconstruction efforts in the period immediately after conflict or disaster, when much of the housing, hospital, educational, transport, civic and business infrastructure has been destroyed or badly damaged. Through selected case studies, Charlesworth examines the role of architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects in three cities following conflict - Beirut, Nicosia and Mostar - three cities where the mental and physical scars of violent conflict still remain. This book expands the traditional role of the architect from 'hero' to 'peacemaker' and discusses how design educators can stretch their wings to encompass the proliferating agendas and sites of civil unrest.

Although little explored as of yet, we don’t yet know what this new hybrid will look like and how can it support new entrepreneurs, equitable jobs, and vital urban forms? How can hybrid models change with new technologies, sustainable manufacturing, and advanced production systems to create new open city? Can we break the planning and land-use patterns of segregated zoning by class and function and encourage mixed-use zoning that transforms new building and zoning codes and this the mix in the city? These questions and more are addressed in Hybrid Factory / Hybrid City, through a collection of essays by participants in the eponymous symposium organized by Nina Rappaport at the Future Urban Legacy Lab of the Politecnico di Torino. Divided into two sections, the essays describes projects and research by architects and urbanists regarding the aura of industry and its smells, its place in relationship to the body, building structures, logistics centers, reused factory buildings, and their current and future potential for mixed-use. Social and economic equity can be integrated through light manufacturing jobs, community uses, and affordable housing.
