Résumé:
For Dust Ndav Kander photographed the desolated landscapes of the Aral Sea and the restricted military zones of Priozersk and Kurtchatov, which did not appear on any map until well after the end of the Cold War. Long-distance missiles were secretly tested in Priozersk, and hundreds of atomic bombs were detonated in the so-called Polygon near Kurchatov, until the program ended in 1989. The bombs were exploded in a remote but still populated area, and covert studies were made of the effects of the radiation on the unsuspecting inhabitants. Kander describes how the ticking of the Geiger counter on his belt while he photographed served as a foil against the aesthetic allure of the ruins.

Questions such as: What is “good” or “bad” art—and does it even matter? Is art still capable of shocking us or have we seen it all before? And what happens if you place apiece of art in a rubbish dump?

This Is Not a House showcases recent projects that represent the vanguard of architects creating innovative spaces for living in the twenty-first century. Dan Rubinstein and the editors of the Amsterdam-based magazine have selected projects on five continents that will shape how we think of domestic life for a long time to come. Where the great experimenters of the last century were stripping away ornamentation and creating free-flowing spaces for the first time, today’s pioneers are researching the potential of new materials and techniques to push the boundaries of environmental sustainability, as well as creating new forms and bold, sophisticated explorations in the adaptive reuse of spaces originally designed for any number of other purposes.

Konstantin Melnikov (1890–1974) is unquestionably one of the outstanding architects of the 20th century—in spite of the fact that he fell silent early, leaving behind only limited work that was insufficiently publicized, and restricted almost exclusively to Moscow, the city of his birth in which he spent nearly his entire life and which did not appreciate him. He was raised in humble circumstances, but enjoyed an excellent education. Beginning in the mid-1920s, after the turmoil that followed the war, revolution and civil war, his career soared at almost meteoric speed as he took the lead in the young Soviet architecture movement with completely autonomous, highly artistic buildings that were free from dogmatism of any kind.

Résumé:
Set amid the imperial extravagances of the American Renaissance to the Roaring Twenties (1890-1935), an era redolent with the well-publicized achievements of such famed designers as Stanford White, Richard Morris Hunt, Carrère & Hastings, and John Russell Pope, it astounds one to learn that the one authentic genius among them was a publicity-shy Philadelphian without any kind of social connections whose formal education did not extend beyond the 10th grade. Yet the supremacy of Horace Trumbauer in the field of classically-inspired residential design is acknowledged by such diverse voices as art connoisseur Joseph Duveen, modernist icon Philip Johnson, and author Aldous Huxley. "American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer," will place the achievements of this master creator of the American Great House before a wider and more discerning public. Working with clients whose names comprise a veritable who's who of America's industrial and financial moguls, Trumbauer's prodigious body of work graced both the exclusive enclaves of Newport, Rhode Island, Long Island, Philadelphia's Main Line and Elkins Park, and the vaunted precincts of New York's Fifth Avenue and Washington DC's Embassy Row. Allied with the finest landscape designers and interior decorators of his time, Trumbauer's elegant mansions represent the ultimate expression of a nation's ambition for grandeur and supremacy since those of the Italian Renaissance. Devoid of any wish for personal fame or artistic recognition, he hoped that his work would ultimately speak for itself. As "American Splendor: The Residential Architecture of Horace Trumbauer" demonstrates, it most certainly and eloquently does. In this first monograph on Horace Trumbauer, American Splendor introduces the genius of this American master architect to the world.

Résumé:
The Eberswalde Library has been compared to a Warhol painting. Designed in collaboration with artist Thomas Ruff, it carries the idea of a pictorial façade further than any other Herzog & de Meuron project. The building is a simple cube sheathed in glazing and cast-concrete panels, arranged in horizontal bands. Each band shows a single image, repeated sixty-six times, like a static film strip. The images are drawn from Ruff’s own archive of newspaper photographs, and encompass the decorative, the symbolic, and the politically charged. Combining elements which have long been deemed incompatible – minimalism and ornament, purity and baroque fullness, concrete box and pictorial façade, space and surface – Herzog & de Meuron’s new library challenges the conventions of modernism.

The publication cites Ed Ruscha’s iconic artist’s book ''Twentysix gasoline stations'' from 1963, and thus spans an arc from the automobile culture of the American Sixties to our own European present, questioning the direction in which we wish to shape this development. A hairdresser, an Asian market, signs upon signs, curtains, and—behind these—apartments. At first glance, a street like any other, but something irritates. Finally, you realize that the images depict only vacancies. The buildings on Waldeggstrasse have been unoccupied for ten years, and it will be almost another ten years before the “gap” is closed to form an inner-city expressway axis. The images by the Austrian photo artist Otto Hainzl link the dramaturgy of social life with questions about urban development concepts.

Résumé:
Since 2006, coinciding with his shift away from analog film to working exclusively with a digital camera, Richard Misrach has been exploring the aesthetic possibilities of the negative image. His latest body of work, debuted in this deluxe, oversize (16.75 by 13 inches), landscape-format volume, comprises dazzling, sublime photographs of landscapes and natural scenes—in negative, but using color with great dexterity and nuance. Inspired by Ansel Adams’ comparison of the photographic negative to a musical score, and John Cage’s 1969 book, "Notations," which compiles music scores as art, Misrach here envisages the photographic image as a score-like negative, teetering on abstraction, that invites a diversity of interpretations. The result is a series of immense beauty unlike any previous Misrach publication.

Résumé:
On February 20th, 1909, a belligerent manifesto announcing the birth of the Futurist movement appeared on the front page of the Paris newspaper "Le Figaro" and had immediate repercussions throughout Europe. The author, a young Italian poet named F.T. Marinetti, demanded that writers and artists reject the classic art of the past and celebrate the dynamic technology of modern city life. Joined by a group of like-minded artists, over the following years Marinetti pioneered an art that would represent movement, in a reaction against the stasis of the classics, and even of its contemporaries such as Cubism. Available in English for the first time in over 20 years, the "Futurist Manifestos" are fiery, explosive, and witty, and crucial to any full appreciation of modern art.
