As the historical and commercial value of old buildings rises, so does the demand for comprehensive restoration information. "Well-Preserved" is the standard guide for preserving historic homes and buildings. This book uses compelling arguments to establish the importance of architectural preservation for a wide variety of buildings in urban, rural, and suburban environments. Examples of 23 broad architectural styles are illustrated along with their cultural and historical significance. Combining concise, clear text with abundant photographic examples, the book presents planning advice for assessing, protecting, designing, repairing, and enhancing heritage structures of any age and style. Illustrated chapters cover the elements of foundation, floor and wall stabilization, roofing, masonry, exterior and interior woodwork, metalwork, stucco, concrete, composites and plaster, windows, entrances, exterior paint, interior finishes, and fixtures.

More than just a specimen, it is an intensive approach to the world of saunas. The typeface Sauna is presented in a rich content; giving pleasure not only to graphic-designers but also to everybody who's life is not connected to ligatures and smallcaps. The book was designed to withstand a sauna bath without any damage: it is restant to hot steam of 120 degrees Celsius. Even better, some parts of the book can only be read inside a sauna at 80 degrees Celsius or higher! So take this book, go to a sauna, and get the "live" experience while reading.

Résumé:
In "The culture box," Harley Parker applies Marshall McLuhan’s medium theory to the museum, analyzes the museum as the site of many media, and specifies the ways in which designer-communicators can engage in inter-sense design to connect audiences and artifacts. Parker argues that museums should retrain the sensory perception of visitors and foster cultural engagement, participation, and empathy. In order to accomplish this, he recommends the construction of what he calls a "new centre," emphasizing both "new" and "news," a small "newseum" which would engender discussion and debate. Parker envisions these centres being constructed adjacent to any existing large prestige museum and containing three exhibits: a current public exhibit, an exhibit in process, and an area for gathering materials for a forthcoming exhibit.

Résumé:
Infrastructures—communication, food, transportation, energy, and information—are all around us, and their enduring function and influence depend on the constant work of repair. In this book, Christopher Henke and Benjamin Sims explore the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life. Henke and Sims offer examples, from local to global, to investigate not only the role of repair in maintaining infrastructures themselves but also the social and political orders that are created and sustained through them. Repair can encompass not only the kind of work we most commonly associate with the term but also any set of practices aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy or credibility to the places and institutions we inhabit in everyday life.

Résumé:
A pioneer of "Water Urbanism" and the "Sponge City" model, Kongjian Yu is not only one of the most important living landscape architects, but also a keen observer of the present. His project proposals and his reflections on urban planning in China are a practical-conceptual reference with which to attempt to unravel the emerging questions of a planet threatened by environmental catastrophes, hydrogeological risks and a water crisis. Taking the foundational geometries of rural landscapes as a model, Kongjian Yu proposes very low technology water infrastructure works which, by activating an adaptive behavior, recompose intermediate landscapes between city and nature, concrete representations of the partnership between man and the element that, more than any other, generates and protects life and water.

Résumé:
Radical Philosophy is a journal of socialist and feminist philosophy. It was founded in 1972 in response to the widely felt discontent with the sterility of academic philosophy at the time (in Britain completely dominated by the narrowest sort of "ordinary language" philosophy), with the purpose of providing a forum for the theoretical work which was emerging in the wake of the radical movements of the 1960s, in philosophy and other fields. Radical Philosophy is not committed to any particular philosophy, ideology or political programme. The purpose of the journal is to provide a forum for debate and discussion of theoretical issues on the left. It encourages the serious and informed discussion of such issues in clear and non-technical language, aimed to reach a wide audience.

Résumé:
We have been told that we are living in the Anthropocene, a geological era shaped by humans rather than by nature. In ''Enlivenment,'' German philosopher Andreas Weber presents an alternative understanding of our relationship with nature, arguing not that humans control nature but that humans and nature exist in a commons of mutual transformation. There is no nature–human dualism, he contends, because the fundamental dimension of existence is shared in what he calls "aliveness." All subjectivity is intersubjectivity. Self is self-through-other. Seeing all beings in a common household of matter, desire, and imagination, an economy of metabolic and economic transformation, is ''enlivenment.'' This perspective allows us to move beyond Enlightenment-style thinking that strips material reality of any subjectivity.

For the majority of politicians, planners, institutions, and residents the features of mega-city regions remain invisible. They are scarcely charted; there are no concepts for representing them or any direct sensory understanding of them in everyday life. The book is based on the understanding that the visual depiction of mega-city regions is fundamental to identifying, acting, and developing within existing concentrations of urban populations. Through essays from various disciplines the book approaches the phenomenon and discusses the necessity to visualize mega-city regions.

Résumé:
By painstakingly combing through unpublished archival records of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Marcel Trudel gives a human face to the over 4,000 Aboriginal and Black slaves bought, sold and exploited in colonial Canada. He reveals the identities of the slave owners, who ranged from governors, seigneurs, and military officers to bishops, priests, nuns, judges, and merchants. Trudel describes the plight of slaves-the joys and sorrows of their daily existence. Trudel also recounts how some slaves struggled to gain their liberty. He documents Canadian politicians, historians and ecclesiastics who deliberately falsified the record, glorifying their own colonial-era heroes, in order to remove any trace of the thousands of Aboriginal and Black slaves held in bondage for two centuries in Canada.
