Résumé:
This volume explores the quintessentially modernist material that is steel—not for the heroic structural innovations it facilitated but for a deeper understanding of the role it played in the steady change of the earth. Focusing on the formative years of the architectural steel economy and on the corporate history of German steel titans Krupp and Thyssen, the author investigates the ecological interrelationship of artificial and natural habitats, mediated by steel. He traces steel through six distinct phases: birth, formation, display, dispersal, construction, and return. By following the life of steel from the collection of raw minerals to the distribution and disposal of finished products, Christensen challenges the traditional narrative that steel was simply the primary material responsible for architectural modernism.

Changing the function of a word, or a room, can produce surprise and meaning. In "How to Architect," Patt - an architect and the creator of a series of wildly popular online videos about architecture -presents the basics of architecture in A-Z form, starting with "A is for Asymmetry" (as seen in Chartres Cathedral and Frank Gehry), detouring through "N is for Narrative," and ending with "Z is for Zeal" (a quality that successful architects tend to have, even in fiction - see T "The Fountainhead's" architect-hero Howard Roark.)

An exploration into media and architecture, Everything All at Once features the experimental work of the New York City-based studio MOS. By exchanging plans and sections for software and film, the firm moves beyond the static forms of traditional architectural discourse and exposes a working technique that is inventive, playful and primitive. In this vibrant publication, partners Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample weave together a visual narrative of computation, representation and design. Showcasing over twenty five projects on screen and in built form, including the acclaimed thatch covered structures from the 2009 PS1 After Party and the mylar weather balloon installation at the 2010 Venice Biennale, the book provides a unique look at the process of one of the most innovative firms at work today.

I’m Here is your typical boy-robot-librarian-meets-girl-robot-free-spirit, boy-robot-librarian-gets-girl-robot-free-spirit… in truth, I’m Here, a whimsical and touching look at love among robots in contemporary L.A., isn’t typical of anything, and neither is this charming book, which provides spreads of color stills from the movie. I’m Here isn’t drawn or stop-motion animation; the movie is live action, with the actors wearing wonderfully awkward costumes concocted of obsolete computer parts.

Résumé:
The diaries of Muhammed Ali Effendi Sa'udi, a civil servant and accomplished photographer, offer a rare glimpse of the Hajj through Egyptian eyes at the beginning of the twentieth century when the Ottoman Empire was on the wane and the advance of the Hijaz railway threatened to upset vested interests in the old pattern of pilgrimage. Sa'udi twice accompanied the Amir al-Hajj, Ibrahim Rif'at Pasha, attached to the official Egyptian caravan. His story of these journeys combines the thoughts of a devout Muslim with fine detail on the hardships and health hazards facing pilgrims, the high-level intrigues, and the ever-present dangers of taking photographs. The authors have compressed the diaries into a readable narrative with selected quotations, illustrated with Sa'udi's photographs.

Résumé:
In many ways the history of civilization is a history of humans’ relationship with nature. Starting from the dual inclination to clear land for cultivation and to enclose space for protection—the forest clearing and the walled garden—there emerges a vital and multifaceted narrative that describes our cultural relationship to, and dependence on, the landscape. Christophe Girot sets out to chronicle this history, drawing on all aspects of mankind’s creativity and ingenuity. In twelve chapters, he brings together the key stories that have shaped our man-made landscapes. Each chapter consists of a thematic essay that ties together the central developments, as well as a case study illustrated with specially commissioned photographs and meticulously detailed 3D re–creations showing the featured site in its original context.

Résumé:
Building loosely on the form of a pocket-sized travel guide, "731.52 cm of land" unfolds into a 731.52 cm wide miniature landscape. Composed of hand-painted and digitally illustrated images stitched together into a continuous sequence, the book includes a poem and short narrative by the artist, an essay co-authored with Daniella Sanader, and an afterword by Heather Canlas Rigg. A sticker sheet featuring animal and plant forms is included as an insert. Functioning as a poetic visual-textual essay, the book unsettles the familiar logic of travel guides and the explorer’s gaze. It troubles the impulses of sightseeing, navigation, and tourism, while calling into question the authoritative languages of archaeology, botany, taxonomy, and cartography. It emerges from ongoing inquiries in Nour Bishouty’s practice around permission, legibility, and understanding.
