Résumé:
According to Frédéric Migayrou, the history of Japanese architecture has seen a permanent tension between the impossible reconstruction of tradition and the unceasing assimilation of modernity. Although having one of the most active international architecture scenes since World War II, a comprehensive overview of Japanese architectural creation from the post-war years has been lacking until now. This catalogue, brimming with archive materials like sketches and models, is published with the eponymous exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, which intends to stimulate a broader appreciation for these masterful works, ensuring their preservation.

What might Gianbattista Piranesi (1720-1778) contribute to today’s architectural debate? Could his vision of a pensile city inspire the city of tomorrow? Archescape is a new concept based on a reading of Piranesi’s Campo Marzio, his sublime reconstruction of ancient Rome. Archescape, a fusion of the words architecture and escape into a new ‘scape’, addresses two issues: the city flight that tends towards the destruction of what it looks for, and the sprawling urban footprint that is unsustainable and blocks escape. It also conceives a way out: the creation of flight lines inside a dense city.

Résumé:
"Up in the air" tells the story of Britain’s multi-storey council housing from its beginnings to the present day. Throughout its history, high rise has been a symbol of the welfare state for better or worse. Here, Holly Smith tells a new story from the perspective of those who lived there, exploring how residents grappled with this brave new world above the old skyline. Through a series of historical moments based upon prize-winning research, we confront the human story of high-rise Britain. Interrogating the complex inheritance of mid-century urban reconstruction, Smith shows how these buildings became a crucible for the welfare state’s reimagination over the decades.

Résumé:
Wolfgang Sonne examines the relationship between city planning and politics. He analyzes a handful of exemplary cities: Washington, D.C., Berlin, Canberra, and New Delhi - each of which underwent major reconstruction during the years spanning the turn of the twentieth century and the advent of World War I. He also discusses the failed plans for the World Centre of Communication, an attempt at creating an international city of peace in 1913. Because this era was marked by the heyday of Imperialism and its related illusions of grandeur, the book evokes the clashing and melding of political and architectural ideals - a conundrum that continues to plague city planners today.

Résumé:
Despite attempts to promote the aesthetics of ruins in Russia - from Catherine the Great's construction of fake ruins in imperial parks to Josef Brodsky's elegiac meditations - ruins have never achieved the status they enjoy in Western Europe. While the Soviet Union was notorious for leveling churches, post-Soviet Russia has only intensified the practice of massive destruction and reconstruction. "Architecture of Oblivion "examines the role of ruins in the development of Russia's historical consciousness from the 18th century to the present. This original work from a leading authority on the subject will appeal to historians of Russian culture and thought, literature and art scholars, and general readers interested in ruins.
