The Soviets seemed less technologically sophisticated (at least from the American perspective) but in fact won many of the races: first satellite to orbit the earth; first man in space; first unmanned landings on Mars, Venus, and the Moon; first woman in space; most powerful rockets; and, until its recent fiery death, the most long-lived space station to name but a few. The inherent contradictions of the age--the mixture of technologies high and low, of nostalgia and progress, of pathos and promise--are revealed in Kosmos, Adam Bartos's astonishing photographic survey of the Soviet space program. Bartos' fascination with this subject led him to seek out places like the bedroom where Yuri Gagarian slept the night before his history-making flight into space, located in the Baiknour Cosmodrome, the one-time top-secret space complex in the Kazakh desert. Bartos also takes us inside the cockpit of the Merkur space capsule, used to ferry crew members and supplies to the super-secret Almaz orbital space stations, and behind the changing screens cosmonauts used before being fitted for their space suits at Zvezda, the chief manufacturer of Soviet life-support systems. In total, Kosmos presents over 100 of Bartos's photographs, rich with the incongruities of the history, science, culture, and politics of the Space Age.

Il en résulte des échanges asymétriques où la philosophie est convoquée par l'artiste pour servir de support ou de cadre à son discours dans un cas, et où l'art est convoqué par le philosophe pour l'offrir à l'esthétique. La philosophe Anne-Françoise Schmid et l'artiste Ivan Liovik Ebel ont décidé de travailler ensemble à la création d'un nouveau lieu qui ne soit pas exactement celui de la rencontre asymétrique habituelle. Soit un commun = X. De ce lieu, des matérialités originales pourront émerger qui ne cherchent pas absolument leurs points d'ancrage dans telle ou telle discipline. C'est-à-dire qu'elle est toujours le fruit de l'invitation de l'un par l'autre sur un terrain étranger. Il en résulte des échanges asymétriques où la philosophie est convoquée par l'artiste pour servir de support ou de cadre à son discours dans un cas, et où l'art est convoqué par le philosophe pour l'offrir à l'esthétique. La philosophe Anne-Françoise Schmid et l'artiste Ivan Liovik Ebel ont décidé de travailler ensemble à la création d'un nouveau lieu qui ne soit pas exactement celui de la rencontre asymétrique habituelle. Soit un commun = X. De ce lieu, des matérialités originales pourront émerger qui ne cherchent pas absolument leurs points d'ancrage dans telle ou telle discipline. Leur projet consiste donc à « théoriser » une topographie de l'autre « espace » où se rejoindront les différentes matérialités. Ce lieu particulier et délicat, incertain dans ses contours, en équilibre toujours précaire, produira les conditions d'une rencontre qui ne prenne pas place sur le terrain connu du dialogue courtois, mais sous une forme originale, sans tradition : une série de textes courts présentés sur deux colonnes et qui, sans s'interpeller ni se répondre tout à fait explicitement, communiquent de manière sensible. Livre délibérement expérimental, il forge le scénario d'un texte aux lieux flottants, au-delà et en deçà de ses dimensions virtuelles. Il effleure à peine et très discrètement les œuvres, théorèmes de l'âme de l'artiste et de la philosophe.
