Résumé:
Bicycles as a means of transport in cities are playing an ever more important role. The reasons are: reduction of motorcar traffic, sustainable traffic planning, reduction of noise and exhaust emissions, enhancement of the value of public space, healthier form of transport, savings potential in national health services and infrastructure expenditure. This book illustrates urban design ideas and architectural projects which go far beyond purely redesigning road layouts; its eight essays focus on the trend in urban design, landscape design, and traffic planning, it introduces nine exemplary bicycle traffic concepts in various cities (Barcelona, Copenhagen, New York, and Oslo amongst others), and presents 28 forward-looking individual bicycle infrastructure projects.

Accessibility means independent and self-reliant living and mobility for people of all ages and in any situation in life. Enabling this requires a clear awareness of the related concepts and principles that need to be adopted into the planning at an early stage. This manual presents both public buildings and orientation systems in the fields of culture, transport, and education, as well as examples from the worlds of work and health. Informative essays provide an insight into the theory of signage, while selected projects are described from the perspective of Design for All.

Résumé:
With eye-opening statistics, original data, and vivid portraits of people who live alone, renowned sociologist Eric Klinenberg upends conventional wisdom to deliver the definitive take on how the rise of going solo is transforming the American experience. Klinenberg shows that most single dwellers—whether in their twenties or eighties—are deeply engaged in social and civic life. There's even evidence that people who live alone enjoy better mental health and have more environmentally sustainable lifestyles. Drawing on more than three hundred in-depth interviews, Klinenberg presents a revelatory examination of the most significant demographic shift since the baby boom and offers surprising insights on the benefits of this epochal change.

Based on his experiences teaching, researching and practicing in India, Henrik Valeur discusses some of the problems related to the urban transition of India, including air pollution, contamination and depletion of fresh water resources, its precarious food situation, the lack of proper housing, and various environmental and human health problems related to motorized transportation. He proposes a number of possible solutions, including the use of plants and natural ventilation to create clean indoor air, the revitalisation of an existing system of water canals, the creation of vertical kitchen gardens, a strategy for making an entire neighbourhood car-free and a design for self-designed, low-cost housing.

Résumé:
In the 1960s and 1970s large, high-technology, inpatient oriented hospitals reflected the central role of such facilities in an expanding healthcare system. But hospital architecture and the healthcare system have vastly changed since then, in profound and unpredicted ways. This book explores for the first time how and why acute care hospitals and the often related psychiatric facilities, retirement communities, and community clinics have been transformed during the final decades of the twentieth century. The authors also consider utopian visions of unbuilt work and look ahead to the possible healthcare landscape of the future: "health villages," home-based care for the aging and aged population, and cyberclinics and virtual hospitals.

"Wild & the city" offers clues to read the current relationship between the Wild and the City from a critical perspective. On the one hand, this book explores the proactive value of wild landscapes to improve urban quality, in contemporary terms of beauty, health, and livability; on the other hand, it quesitons the risks of 'wild' as a buzzword that renews anti-urban positions or feeds practices and policies of consensual and cheap-plaudit 'greenery'. The aim is to account for the variety of readings raised by the urban wilderness, which continue to find their discriminating element in the restless relationship between city and nature.

The world came to a standstill in the year 2020. Aside from the health crisis presented by the global pandemic, the economic catastrophe deepened peoples’ suffering and uncertainty in a tense climate of political polarisation. In his introduction, editor Luis Fernández-Galiano analyses the year’s main architectural events and key topical issues in a chronicle of four seasons. The yearbook presents a selection of 24 buildings that reflect the discipline’s current panorama in Spain, categorised as destinations, industrial spaces, cultural or social projects, edifices for education, and collective alternatives. Other features reflect on a year like no other, but with hope for the future.

Résumé:
Once only a vague metaphor to describe the relationship between different social groups, the term “social distance” has acquired a precise meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the mandatory minimum distance for face-to-face contact between persons, and can vary slightly depending on the jurisdiction. Rather than asserting a diagnosis of our contemporary global emergency, this issue offers perspectives from architectural history and theory. From the great plague of Venice to cholera in the industrialising city, and from the human placenta to the 1960s bubble or the office of today, here a broad range of reflections on contagion, disease, and health can be found.

Our relationship with dirt is complex and ambivalent. Dirt is waste, excrement, rubbish, bacteria--but what then is soil, where crops grow, and to which our bodies eventually return? Dirt may pose significant risks to our health, but it is also vital to our existence. Lavishly illustrated, this exciting and often startling book is a provocative introduction to a vast and complex subject. Five writers and a graphic novelist pursue different themes from a range of perspectives in order to examine dirt and its contradictions, including personal grooming, the politics of dirt in the home, city sanitation, and waste disposal. From a 2011 exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, London.

Résumé:
Seoul is not a metropolis striving to develop and expand but a meta-city seeking a dedicated balance between restoration and change. In a meta-city, all individuals are valued equally and acknowledge the differences among them. The various relationships in a meta-city are not linear or hierarchical but variegated and intricate. A number of restorative public spaces serve to revitalize the individual health and the collective identities. The present and the past coexist and the city functions to both reminisce the past and plan for the future. Also, Seoul will constantly reflect on the city’s values and uphold the dignity of the people.
