Résumé:
As a young boy, Sebastião Salgado loved exploring his parents’ farm in the forests of Brazil, always dreaming of what might lie beyond his view. When he went away to school, he met Lélia, who showed him how to use a camera. As he looked through the lens, Sebastião realized he could use photography to capture how the world fits together. Sebastião used his pictures to tell the stories of people who might not otherwise be seen. But after witnessing too much destruction, he put away his camera and returned to his childhood home. The land was in ruins. So Sebastião and Lélia decided to rebuild the rainforest and photograph the beauty of the world to save it. Through art and activism, they would show that everyone was responsible for caring for the planet and that hope endures if we take action.

Résumé:
The career of avant-garde photographer and activist Germaine Krull (1897–1985) took her across the world over a turbulent century. After growing up around Europe, Krull studied photography in Munich during the First World War. There she acquired her nickname or alter-ego ‘Chien fou’ (Mad Dog), which provides the chronological and thematic starting point for this volume of writings drawn from the course of Krull’s extraordinary life, most published for the first time. The selected texts range from artistic manifestos to political essays to memoirs, written between the 1920s and ’80s in a wide variety of places and circumstances. They narrate Krull’s life among the creative communities of the Bavarian Soviet Republic and interwar Paris, her participation in the French Resistance in Brazil and Equatorial Africa, and her later decision to settle in Thailand, then India.

What does the ideal capital look like? Photographer Nick Hannes traveled to six countries – Egypt, Korea, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Brazil – that have recently built a new capital or are in the process of doing so. Each and every one of them is a typical example of what Rem Koolhaas calls the Generic City: a planned city without historical layers, local identity, or its own character. As a visual sociologist with a sharp eye for detail, Hannes searches for the human dimension in a setting full of spectacular architecture and pompous prestige projects. "New Capital" is a critical reflection on unbridled neoliberal urban development and its social and ecological consequences, but is also peppered with subtle humor and surprising coincidences. Meandering between pride and sadness, "New Capital" shows how utopia and dystopia are sometimes surprisingly close.

Résumé:
Siri Ekker Svendsen’s ''All the whisperings of the world'' is a photo book examining the visual connections between nature’s vulnerability and the effects of an allergic shock to the body. To accomplish this, the artist takes us on a journey to contemporary rainforest areas in South America. The locus of this process is the Brazil nut. The book weaves macro and micro perspectives with Svendsen’s classic black and white photographs, revealing the human body within a diverse ecosystem of complex interdependency. Images via microscope — body cells that have been destroyed due to allergic reactions — lead to images from scientific research on the body, flora, and fauna. A fragile connection is visualized, creating space to contemplate, fear, and grieve — ''All the whisperings of the world'' is an elegiac yearning for the loss of diversity in nature, which we see is also our own habitat.

Résumé:
The product of an international collective of artists, architects and writers who create collaborative projects and publications, this third edition of Surface Tension's Supplement series documents three years of artistic research, site-specific work and location-based practices in Curitiba, Brazil--providing an in-depth exploration of the city's economically marginal favela dwellers, who venture throughout the public spaces of Curitiba in search of recyclable materials. Documentation and texts elaborate on the cultural and political issues that come to light through various uses of public space. Originally developed as a collaborative installation between international and local artists--including Ken Ehrlich, Brandon LaBelle, Octávio Camargo and Guilherme Soares--exhibited at Curitiba's Ybakatu Gallery, this publication raises pertinent questions about the consequences of cross-cultural and site-specific collaboration and proffers an experimental approach toward political inquiry and intermedia practice.

Résumé:
This publication presents a comprehensive survey of the artist’s oeuvre and an overview of her exhibitions of the past three decades. The luxuriant equatorial forests and voluptuous vegetation of Brazil and the cultural implications of plant genera and flowers are integral to the imagery of Luzia Simons’s art. In watercolors, paintings, photographs, and tapestries, the artist probes the impenetrable role that nature plays, employing pictorial techniques of her own devising to create poetic studies of forms and colors. Simons is a pioneer in the development of the scanogram—a media technique that combines elements of painting and photography. Arranging blossoms and leaves of a wide range of tulip cultivars on a high-resolution scanner, she produces imposing works that boast intense and brilliant colors and stupendous definition. Just as nature and culture are in constant transformation, identities never remain fixed: that is what Simons’s work illustrates to stunning effect.
