Résumé:
Although architecture alone cannot solve the problem of homelessness, the question arises: What and which roles can it play? How can architecture collaborate with other disciplines in developing ways to permanently house those who do not have a home? This volume seeks to explore and understand a reality that involves the expertise of national, regional, and city agencies, nongovernmental organizations, health-care fields, and academic disciplines. Through scholarly essays, interviews, analyses of architectural case studies, and research on the historical and current situation in Los Angeles, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, São Paulo, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, this book unfolds different entry points toward understanding homelessness and some of the many related problems. The publication accompanies the exhibition “Who’s Next” by the Architekturmuseum München in Munich, Germany.

Résumé:
Looking at the relationship between art, archives and activism, this publication begins with the 1970s, an era when social movements – feminism, environmentalism, LGBTQ2SIA+ rights, Indigenous rights, access to health services and housing – began to coalesce into models of self-organization that overlapped with the production of art and culture. Noting the resurgence of art practice involved with social activism and an increasing interest in the 1970s from younger producers, the Belkin connected with diverse archives and activist networks to bring forward these histories, to commission new works of art and writing and to provide a space for discussion and debate. This book brings contemporary art practices into active dialogue with the past, interweaving archive with artwork, poetry, prose and critical investigation.

Résumé:
While the history of São Paulo dates back more than 450 years, most of its growth took place after World War II as the city's major economic engine shifted from agriculture to industry. Today, as São Paulo evolves into a service economy hub, Felipe Correa argues, the city must carefully examine how to better integrate its extensive inner city post-industrial land into contemporary urban uses. In ''São Paulo: A Graphic Biography,'' Correa presents a comprehensive portrait of Brazil's largest city, narrating its fast-paced growth through archival material, photography, original drawings, and text. Additional essays from scholars in fields such as landscape architecture, ecology, governance, and public health offer a series of interdisciplinary perspectives on the city's history and development.

Résumé:
From building blocks to city blocks, an eye-opening exploration of how children's playthings and physical surroundings affect their development. What do youngsters lose when seesaws are deemed too dangerous and slides are designed primarily for safety? How can the built environment help children cultivate self-reliance? Alexandra Lange reveals the surprising histories behind the human-made elements of our children's pint-size landscape. Her fascinating investigation shows how the seemingly innocuous universe of stuff affects kids' behavior, values, and health, often in subtle ways. And she reveals how years of decisions by toymakers, architects, and urban planners have helped--and hindered--American youngsters' journeys toward independence. Seen through Lange's eyes, everything from the sandbox to the street becomes vibrant with buried meaning.

Résumé:
In this volume in the "Pamphlet Architecture" series, the authors examine common architectural forms (chairs, doors, and walls) and programs (a cinema, a health club, a skyscraper) in order to dissect and reconfigure them. In the process they create ten new projects that draw their power from an oscillation between the recognizable and the surreal. Cleverly undermining the conventions and norms of contemporary architectural design, the authors pose a direct challenge to the seemingly endless search for new styles, arguing instead that the greatest potential for architecture in the twenty-first century rests on an imaginative examination of what we take for granted. Designed by the authors, "Situation Normal..." weaves together text, photographs, and drawings. An introductory essay establishes the theoretical and historical position of the book.
