In the spring of 1900, British archaeologist Arthur Evans began to excavate the palace of Knossos on Crete, bringing ancient Greek legends to life just as a new century dawned amid far-reaching questions about human history, art, and culture. Over the next three decades, Evans engaged in an unprecedented reconstruction project, creating a complex of concrete buildings on the site that owed at least as much to modernist architecture as they did to Bronze Age remains. In the process, he fired the imaginations of a whole generation of intellectuals and artists, whose work would drive movements as disparate as fascism and pacifism, feminism and psychoanalysis. With Knossos and the Prophets of Modernism, Cathy Gere relates the fascinating story of Evans’s excavation and its long-term effects on Western culture.

Résumé:
With the temporary exhibition pavilion of the German Reich at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe designed an architectural icon, but also a controversial monument of the way the Weimar Republic portrayed itself. The building is one of the most unusual success stories in the history of architecture: Despite its short existence, its reputation grew steadily in the following decades, thanks in part to magnificent photographs. It was soon considered the constructed manifesto of the Modern Age, and its spatial and "ideational" ambitions were called "a milestone of Modern architecture." This comprehensively, broadly researched book portrays the building’s complex history and its political entanglement- up to and including its reconstruction according to van der Rohe’s plans at the original site between 1983 and 1986.

Situated on the shore of the Lake Zurich, Le Corbusier's exhibition pavilion is his last realised design. Based on his Modulor proportional system and at the scale of a single-family home, it demonstrates the potential of prefabricated elements to form a perfect space for art and design. Commissioned in 1960 by Heidi Weber, Zurich-based gallery owner and patron of Le Corbusier the visual artist, this structure in steel and glass represents pivotal aspects of his architectural philosophy and also points to the future. Architects Silvio Schmed and Arthur Ruegg have carefully restored the Pavillon Le Corbusier to its original state, including the reconstruction of missing pieces of furniture and luminaires. This book documents their research and the restored building, featuring previously unpublished historic photographs and documents alongside newly commissioned images by Georg Aerni.

Résumé:
Architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) played a major role in modern Dutch architecture. He designed revolutionary, complex, large-scale buildings with metropolitan allure, like the Groothandelsgebouw and the Euromast in Rotterdam and the Scheveningen Pier. In Maaskant: Architect of Progress architecture historian and Maaskant expert Michelle Provoost places Maaskant in an international and historical perspective. Hugh Maaskant is considered the godfather and forerunner of the generation of Winy Maas (MVRDV), Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Willem Jan Neutelings and Rem Koolhaas. Yet he was underappreciated for many years. Provoost describes Maaskant’s work as part of the optimistic, stimulating aspect of post-war reconstruction and the exciting world of the 1960s. She also places him in the context of Dutch architecture, both of his time and of later generations, particularly the ‘Super Dutch’.

Finding your way around Sami building culture and architecture can be a challenge, as the material is scattered and sometimes inaccessible. This book is intended as both an introduction and a guide to deepening one's knowledge of the subject - in North Sami, Norwegian and English. In October 2021, the National Museum opened an exhibition of architect and artist Joar Nango's nomadic architectural library Girjegumpi. During the opening weekend, the museum organized a seminar on Sami architecture, and the lectures from the seminar are the basis for the book. Here you can read more about Nango's work Girjegumpi, Sami building practices, the treatment of the Sami in the history of architecture in Norway, how reconstruction and Norwegianization went hand in hand, the phenomenon of kjempelávvu, and also get an overview of Sami architecture on the Norwegian side of Sápmi.

Résumé:
This issue focuses on the reconstruction and reinvention of the classical letter in Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It includes a previously unpublished article by the late Nicolete Gray. This reproduces, in 26 full-page illustrations, an unsigned and undated (late fifteenth century) manuscript of an alphabet of capital letters, presently in the Newberry Library, Chicago, and provides the first analysis of this important document. Other articles here are the first English translation of the late Giovanni Mardersteig’s seminal essay of 1959 (‘L.B. Alberti e la rinascita del carattere lapidario romano nel quattrocento’), and James Mosley on Giovan Francesco Cresci’s formative influence on the form of Western handwriting, and hence on typefaces, and on the inscriptional capitals which appeared on new buildings in Rome between 1585 and 1590. Paul Stiff contributes a piece on ‘Designing public letters in fifteenth-century Florence’.

Résumé:
For more than twenty-five years, Swiss architects Bernhard Aebi and Pascal Vincent have been running their practice with offices in Bern and Geneva. Housing is one of the firm’s main fields of activity, yet it has also won several high-profile public commissions, such as the restoration and reconstruction of Switzerland’s national parliament building in Bern, the renovation of the Swiss National Bank’s Bern headquarters, and the south wing of Zurich’s main train station. The images by photographers Adrian Scheidegger and Alexander Jaquemet, both longtime companions of the architects, demonstrate how the spaces they created gradually and naturally integrate with their environment. Writer Gianna Molinari joined Scheidegger and Jaquemet on their expeditions to Aebi & Vincent’s buildings. Her literary snapshots supplement the images in this volume, stimulating our imagination of the inner life of these structures and their occupants.
