Résumé:
Sprawl. The word calls to mind a host of troublesome issues such as city flight, runaway suburban development, and the conversion of farmland to soulless housing developments. In "Sprawltown", architectural historian Richard Ingersoll makes the surprising claim that sprawl is an inevitable reality of modern life that should be addressed more thoughtfully and recognized as its own new form of urbanism rather than simply being criticized and condemned. In five chapters, covering topics such as tourism, film, and the automobile, Ingersoll takes the position that any solution to the problems of sprawl—including pressing issues like resource use and energy waste— must take into consideration its undeniable success as a social milieu. No screed against the suburb, this book offers a more sophisticated and nuanced view of the way we think about its rapid development and growth.

Résumé:
Traditionally a critical component of the education of any architect was to draw the ruins of ancient Rome, reconstructing either from ancient sources or, more often, pure fantasy, what the original structures must have looked like. From this training emerged generations of architects imbued with the aesthetic ideals that would form the Neoclassical and Beaux-Arts building styles. Drawings of the ruins of ancient Rome made by French "Prix de Rome" architects from 1786 through 1924 are reproduced. Accompanied by text that explains how the Prix de Rome was awarded and the significance of the prize in the history of architecture, as well as how the study of ancient models formed the basis for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century architectural styles, these drawings provide an understanding of how the modern imagination recorded and transformed ancient fragments into a modern architectural idiom.

Résumé:
Gorgeously quiet in color and composition, Agnes Martin's paintings have a distinctive grace that sets them apart from those of the Abstract Expressionists of her day and the Minimalist artists she inspired. Martin attributed her grid-based works to metaphysical motivations, lending a serene complexity to her oeuvre that has defied any easy categorization. Perhaps for this reason, critical and scholarly analysis of her paintings has been scarce--until now. This important new anthology brings together the most current scholarship on Martin's paintings by twelve multidisciplinary essayists who consider various aspects of the artist's four-decade career. Organized by Dia Art Foundation, whose extensive holdings of Martin's paintings and ambitions to support in-depth research on the works are unparalleled, the publication brings renewed focus and energy to Martin's career and her contributions to the art historical narrative

Résumé:
From 2013 to 2023, photographer Matteo Di Giovanni (born 1980) embarked on several rambling journeys off the beaten path through Italy, Scandinavia and Northern Europe, in which map and territory gave way to intuition and curiosity, documenting the outer world through attentive observation and image-making. Di Giovanni’s landscapes seem intimate and mythic, while the still lifes are vast and open—interior and exterior are interchangeable. True Places Never Are resequences this series of medium format photographs (originally released as three separate photobooks) and adds several previously unpublished images. The result is a fresh, cohesive body of work in which the location and chronology are secondary to the intangible meanings and associations suggested by the lens. Taken from a line in Moby-Dick, the title expands upon this search for metaphysical enlightenment: "It is not down on any map; true places never are."

Résumé:
London has been rebuilt and reshaped perhaps more than any other city over its two-millennia history. From the construction of the Underground to slum clearance and the Blitz, buildings have long been damaged or demolished to pave way for the new. Today, demolition is big business, and around 3500 buildings are destroyed each year, most of which are social housing. Paul Knox traces the history of London from the Great Fire to the present day through twenty-five lost buildings. Knox explores surprising and unusual locations in the city’s history, like the Necropolis Station in Waterloo used by funeral parties traveling to a burial ground in Surrey. We see historic landmarks, like Christ Church Greyfriars and the Crystal Palace, as well as everyday places like the White Horse pub in Poplar and a housing estate in Hackney.

Résumé:
Since making his earliest documentary photographs in the 1950s, David Plowden has honored those proud structures and places that America has discarded — from brawny commercial and industrial centers to small towns and farms. He reveres the honest work and spirit that built them. But the scene has changed much in the last five decades, and what's left of the honesty of small communities and the working of the land is all but gone, dealt a death blow by outsourcing, conglomerization, and our incessant drive to buy cheap at any cost. The America of these photographs is a bittersweet reminder of things once cherished and a life no longer possible. Deserted Main Streets and crumbling facades stare at us blindly. Abandoned houses and buildings reach back to ground. Plowden's work is a sad symphony — incomparably and irresistibly beautiful, while reminding us of our loss.

Résumé:
There is scarcely any construction principle that can boast an equally extensive array of positive effects than the greening of the exterior and interior building envelope. "Green, greener, greenest : façades, roofs, indoors offers a comprehensive survey of a range of façade, roof and interior greenings. Here, it is plants that are the main building material: neatly arranged, they complement minimalist high-rise architecture; wildly rampant, they serve as an extravagant element of interior design; and through creative composition, they come to form a sophisticated work of art. The cross-disciplinary juxtaposition of technological progress and creative design is never far from view. Whether in an urban setting or part of a natural landscape, the projects showcased in this volume prove that there is still limitless creative potential in architectural greening, posing new and exciting challenges for designers and landscape architects alike.

Résumé:
This volume investigates the cut-up as a contemporary mode of creativity and important global model of cultural production. The term cut-up thereby serves as an open container for a long list of terms and actions that describe the combination and reassembly of existing motifs, fragments, images and ideas from diverse and disconnected origins into newly synthesized entities. Refusing any disciplinary coherence, this book assembles texts from multifarious eras and origins. At the same time, the contributors share an urgency to question the dichotomy of original creation and derivative appropriation. In this way, the book itself is a cut-up of previously published essays and articles that in their proximity allow for multiple readings to arise. It aims to translate the topic into a wider societal discourse to serve as both a source of inspiration and a platform for critical reflection.

Résumé:
Confounded by global warming and in search of an affirmative politics that links ecology with social change, Matt Hern and Am Johal set off on a series of road trips to the tar sands of northern Alberta—perhaps the world's largest industrial site, dedicated to the dirty work of extracting oil from Alberta's vast reserves. Seamlessly combining travelogue, sophisticated political analysis, and ecological theory, speaking both to local residents and to leading scholars, the authors propose a new understanding of ecology that links the domination of the other-than-human world to the domination of humans by humans. They argue that any definition of ecology has to start with decolonization and that confronting global warming requires a politics that speaks to a different way of being in the world—a reconstituted understanding of the sweetness of life.

Résumé:
The idea that a building is 'finished' or 'complete' on the day it opens its doors is hardwired into existing thinking about design, planning and construction. But this ignores the unprecedented rate of social and technological change. A building only begins its life when the contractors leave. With resources at a premium and a greater need for a sustainable use of building materials, can we still afford to construct new housing or indeed any buildings that ignore the need for flexibility or the ability to evolve over time? Our design culture needs to move beyond the idealisation of a creative individual designer generating highly specific forms with fixed uses. The possibilities of adaptation and flexibility have often been overlooked, but they create hugely exciting 'loose-fit' architectures that emancipate users to create their own versatile and vibrant environments.
