Résumé:
Forced to thrust skywards by the constraints of its position on a narrow strip of land between the sea and high mountains, Hong Kong has developed a breath-taking skyline. One of the most densely populated areas in the world, it has a greater number of high-rise structures than any other major international city: more than 2,300 buildings at over 100 metres high – and more are completed almost daily. The originally wild and now largely domesticated topography of the island seems exhausted, fully restricted and there is no more land to be taken from the sea. Mainly European and American architects have played a role in creating the buildings of Hong Kong, but local architects maintain their hold with confidence on this hotly contested market. This guide to architecture presents 100 characteristic buildings that define the urban landscape of the former British Crown Colony.

Résumé:
The follow-up to the celebrated Wanderers, Kerri Andrews’s ''Way makers'' is the first anthology of women’s writing about walking. Moving from Elizabeth Carter’s correspondence with Catherine Talbot in the eighteenth century through to Merryn Glover in the present day, and across poetry, letters, diaries, novels, and more, this anthology traces a long tradition of women’s walking literature. Walking is, for the women included in this anthology, a source of creativity and comfort; it is a means of expressing grief, longing, and desire. It is also a complicated activity: it represents freedom but is also sometimes tinged with danger and fear. What cannot be denied any longer is that walking was, and continues to be, an activity full of physical and emotional significance for women: this anthology is a testament to the rich literary heritage created by generations of women walker-writers over the centuries.

Résumé:
Richards shows that attractive and practical alternatives to a car dependent society are possible. With the growth of car ownership and use reaching crisis proportions in our cities it is imperative to find and implement alternatives if cities are to survive and prosper. He reveals how transport technology is developing, in particular, showing how it can be integrated into the urban environment. The book opens with a look at the "best" of current transportation systems and goes on to explore such advanced technologies as automated highways, covered cities, monorails, new elevated systems, smart cars, guided buses, as well as intelligent highways, and car-free housing. The importance, too, of simple measures such as walking and cycling are covered as being an essential part of any future city as well as that of an "integrated transport" if people are to be encouraged to get out of their cars.

Résumé:
Skyscrapers have been piercing the clouds since the end of the nineteenth century but today's soaring land prices are driving developers to build bigger, better and higher while aiming for as small a footprint as possible. This book features spreads with a large photograph with cross-section drawings plus fact boxes listing location, year of completion, height, stories, primary functions, owner/developer, architect, structural engineer, and construction firm. Concise text describes historical context; unusual or innovative construction; engineering and structural systems; foundation, facade, and shape; the site history; and building usage; as well as any special features that make the skyscraper unique. The 46 skyscrapers in "How to Build a Skyscraper" appear not for their height but for their pioneering technology, sustainability, and other characteristics that set them apart. They are distributed over the world's most developed regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Résumé:
Since the mid-1990s, when China allowed its architects to practice independently from government-run design institutes, a new kind of architecture, distinguished by unique regional characteristics, has emerged. "China Dialogues" is a rigorously selected collection of insightful interviews that the book’s author Vladimir Belogolovsky has conducted with 21 leading Chinese architects during his extensive travels in China. At the time when so many buildings that are being built around the world are no longer rooted in their place and culture, the leading Chinese architects succeeded collectively in producing unique architectural body of work that could not be confused with any other regional school. The interviews are accompanied by over 120 photographs and drawings of beautifully executed projects built throughout China since early 2000s. "China Dialogues" opens up the thinking process of the country’s top architects, as they share their ideas, insights, intentions, and visions in unusually revealing and candid ways.

Résumé:
The concept "Formula New Ljubljana" is used as a means to explore the city's development as a constant and dynamic process. Rather than being in a state of frozen identity, Slovenia's capital inspires new visions. Formulas state concepts applied to architectural products. They are used as the communication tool in the office while developing a particular product, in discussions with the client and presentations to the public. More than one product can be defined by one formula. Formulas exist regardless of typologies, program, location, budget, time of execution symbolic power, or any other parameter that outline the "uniqueness" of an architectural product. Formulas aim to become generic phrases and to provide a user friendly tool for communicating architectural products. Formulas communicate architectural products away from their technical or typological categories. A formula captures the character of an architectural product and its effect on the observer and the user.

Résumé:
For more than twenty years, David Piscuskas and Juergen Riehm, principals of 1100 Architect, have honed a distinctive architecture informed by proportion, materiality, light, and detail. The firm's designs do not adhere to any specific stylistic codes but do share an understated architectural signature: an elegance of proportion, an innovative yet direct use of materials, a meticulous execution. A sequel to "1100 Architect" (1997), this new monograph includes more than twenty recent buildings and projects, notably Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School and the Irish Hunger Memorial, both in New York City, and the Naha City Gallery and Apartment House, in Japan. The firm’s work encompasses cultural, institutional, residential, and commercial work. In addition to a perceptive essay by a long-time observer of the firm’s work, the partners discuss five design elements essential to their practice: detail, materiality, effortlessness, permeability, and recognition.
