Architect and photographer Gary Chang spends about 120 days a year traveling all over the world, but he doesn't stay at just any hotel. He plans his trips with exhaustive research on the hotels of his destination and even stays at several different ones during the same trip to one city. His favorite hotels are those places that have a certain special quality, ranging from New York's kitschy Maritime to Budapest's classic Gellert to Zurich's brand-spanking new Zurichberg. Chang's most-loved finds are documented in beautiful photographs, his hand drawn floor plans, and personal texts in Hotel as Home. He presents thirty-five hotels from around the world in this atmospheric book — from the Hotel 101 in Reykjavik to the Hotel Le Corbusier in Marseilles, the Soho House Hotel in New York, the W Hotel in Sydney, the Four Seasons in Tokyo, and the Hotel Metropolitan in Bangkok.

Résumé:
Straightforward photography, a restrained color scheme, simple texts set in a functional typeface: these are the formal elements that German graphic designer Michael Engelmann drew on to create an unmistakable pictorial language for posters. Engelmann came to advertising self-taught, with a background in American advertising practice. In the 1950s, he set about expunging any trace of empty bourgeois enthusiasm for advertising by applying a strictly conceptual working approach. In his posters for Pirelli, The Philadelphia Enquirer, Renault, or Roth Händle, images and ideas came together in a way as simple as it was compelling, creating signs of great associative force. His was a highly regarded contribution to graphic design's breakthrough into the age of mass communication; it introduced wit and a sense of using resources economically. "Poster Collection 10" brings together numerous posters created by Engelmann, who died prematurely at the age of 38.

Résumé:
Robert Frank is one of the most influential of all post-war photographers. Pioneering a revolutionary approach to photography and filmmaking, he combines autobiographical and poetic elements to produce straight black-and-white images that transcend the specific. Speaking of universal experience, Frank has said, "I'm trying to forget easy photo, trying to make something from within." He adds, "Time moves on and never stops or waits." Often involving a progression through a series of images, his work is structured like a musical sequence, creating storylines that resonate beyond the frozen moment of any single photograph. "Storylines" accompanies an exhibition highlighting Frank's experimental use of narrative in photography and film. The exhibition consists of his films and photographs, including Polaroids, contact sheets, and recent digital stills. Photographs from locations as diverse as Peru, London, Wales, Coney Island, and Chicago, appear along with several artist's books.

Résumé:
On any given night, more than 650,000 people in the United States—many with families and full-time jobs—experience homelessness. The shortfall in affordable housing is estimated to be 5 million units or more. Devastating effects of these conditions include an increase in multigenerational poverty, a decrease in economic mobility, and—since the housing crisis has a disproportionate impact on communities of color—a heightening of racial injustice. Assembled here are essays by economists, scholars, architects, planners, and community organizers to address diverse aspects of the subject. The book discusses the history and extent of the US housing crisis; permanent affordable housing and affordable housing as a component of market-rate residential buildings; the development of community associations that can build and manage local units; links between housing production and climate change; and the pervasive and long-term consequences of racial discrimination in the housing market.

Résumé:
This book provides a comprehensive account of mosaics in the ancient world from the early pebble mosaics of Greece to the pavements of Christian churches in the East. Separate chapters in Part I cover the principal regions of the Roman Empire in turn, bringing out the distinctive characteristics of their mosaic workshops. Questions of technique and production, of the role of mosaics in architecture, and of their social functions and implications are treated in Part II. The book discusses both well known works and recent finds, and balances consideration of exceptional masterpieces against standard workshop production. Two main lines of approach are followed throughout: first, the role of mosaics as a significant art form, which over an unbroken span illuminates the evolution of pictorial style better than any comparable surviving medium; and secondly, their character as works of artisan production closely linked to their architectural context.

Novartis Campus at Basel will be characterized by far-reaching visions of urban space and architecture. The first new building on the Campus – "Forum 3" by Diener, Federle, Wiederin – was finished in 2005, followed by "Fabrikstrasse 6" of Peter Märkli. The third building – "Fabrikstrasse 4" by SANAA – was opened in autumn 2006. The two partners who lead SANAA, Ryue Nishizawa and Kazuyo Sejima, have designed a building that disregards all the rules of historical architecture: a rack, without a façade, with no hierarchy in its structure, and not responding in any way to the maxim of the pre-modern city. Essentially there are two materials: a light-coloured structure in in-situ concrete clad with glass. This publication presents works by Walter Niedermayr as well as numerous plans. With an introduction Ulrike by Jehle-Schulte Strathaus, texts by Aaron Betsky, Valerio Olgiati and Moritz Küng. Inventory by SANAA.

Photographic monograph by Cristian Ordóñez. The pictures of this book were taken between years 2009 and 2017. Eight years in which the artist investigates the connection to place in a close relationship and immersion to the land. People, places and traces discovered in various locations of Chile (where the artist is originally from), Canada (his new home) and the United States. Cristian explores his surroundings and boundaries to find details that provide memories to a place that still feels new to him. He often put myself in situations where he wanders alone through unknown places, without any specific plan in mind - exploring, improvising and letting himself drift and flow to record elements that drive his attention, discovering cultures and local information that manifests along the way as evidence, providing a representation of the area and somehow activating memories of other places he has lived in.

Résumé:
Vernon Lee-a pseudonym of Violet Paget (1856-1935)-is the most important female aesthetician to come out of 19th-century England. Though she was widely known for her supernatural fictions, Lee never gained the recognition she so clearly deserved for her contributions in the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of empathy and art criticism. An early follower of Walter Pater, she wrote with an extreme attention to her own responses to artworks, and a level of psychological sensitivity rarely seen in any aesthetic writing. Today, she is largely understudied and rarely read, her aesthetic writings long out of print. Now, David Zwirner Books reintroduces her writing through the first-ever English publication of The Psychology of an Art Writer (1903) along with selections from her groundbreaking Gallery Diaries (1901-4), breathtaking accounts of Lee’s own experiences with the great paintings and sculptures she traveled to see.

Résumé:
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wall charts were a familiar classroom component, displaying scientific images at a large scale, in full color. But it's only now that they've been superseded as a teaching tool that we have begun to realize something their ubiquity hid: they are stunning examples of botanical art at its finest. This illustrated book gives the humble wall chart its due, reproducing more than two hundred of them in dazzling full color. Each wall chart is accompanied by captions that offer accessible information about the species featured, the scientists and botanical illustrators who created it, and any particularly interesting or innovative features the chart displays. And gardeners will be pleased to discover useful information about plant anatomy and morphology and species differences. We see lilies and tulips, gourds, aquatic plants, legumes, poisonous plants, and carnivorous plants, all presented in exquisite, larger-than-life detail.
