Résumé:
Hargreaves Associates has been at the forefront of landscape architectural practice since its founding in 1983, creating a narrative approach to landscape architecture that layers history, ecology, and environmental phenomena. Whether reductive or rich, highly programmed or passive, culturally interpretive or teeming with the phenomena of nature’s own systems, the built landscapes of Hargreaves Associates emphasize the power of connection to day-to-day life. This volume presents projects from throughout the 25-year history of the firm and highlights the firm's role in advancing the reoccupation of postindustrial sites, including the reclamation of waterfronts within the United States, Europe, and Australia. Featuring color photographs and illustrations throughout, the book also shows how the firm works with cultural landscapes, urban parks, smaller plazas, and gardens. Included are details on Hargreaves' innovative entries in recent landscape architectural competitions, including its stunning design of a 270-acre Victorian-style pleasure garden for the 2012 London Olympics.

The potential of electric light as a new building 'material' was recognized in the 1920s and became a useful design tool by the mid-century. Skilful lighting allowed for theatricality, narrative, and a new emphasis on structure and space. "The Structure of Light" tells the story of the career of Richard Kelly, the field's most influential figure. Six historians, architects, and practitioners explore Kelly's unparalleled influence on modern architecture and his lighting designs for some of the 20th century's most iconic buildings: Philip Johnson's Glass House; Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum; Eero Saarinen's GM Technical Center; and Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building, among many others. This publication demonstrates the range of applications, building types, and artistic solutions he employed to achieve a 'nocturnal modernity' that would render buildings evocatively different at night. The survival of Kelly's rich correspondence and extensive diaries allows an in-depth look at the triumphs and uncertainties of a young profession in the making.

Résumé:
Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Harry Gruyaert revolutionized creative and experimental uses of color in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by cinema and American photographers, his work defined new territory for color photography: an emotive, non-narrative, and boldly graphic way of perceiving the world. In 1972, while living in London, Gruyaert created the striking series by turning the dial on a television set at random and photographing the distorted images he saw there. A later series, , portrays his ambivalent relationship with his homeland in a palette of saturated tones. In his most recent work, he embraces the possibilities of digital photography, taking further creative risks to capture light in new ways. Gruyaert’s images are autonomous, often independent of any context or thematic logic. This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is a superb overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses.

Résumé:
Sluminsider is a choral narrative that attempts to reveal the complexity of the slum of Mathare, one of the biggest shantytowns in Nairobi. The project of expansion of a street school, the Why Not Junior Academy, and the process of environmental improvement of the surrounding area, where a community agriculture initiative has been set up to replace an unauthorized dump, is the starting point from which to combine experiences and identities from very different disciplines, including architecture, design, agriculture, photography and video. This project is one of the case studies used for comparison and dialogue with the city of São Paulo and the São Paulo Calling research project, which examined the informal settlements of Rome, Nairobi, Medellin, Mumbai, Moscow and Baghdad. For six months, an exhibition analyzed the characteristics, differences and causes of informal settlements, developing six workshops in the field in different favelas of São Paulo and organizing size encounters that made São Paulo the world capital of the debate on transformation of contemporary cities.

Résumé:
In 1900, Swedish design reformer and social theorist Ellen Key published The Century of the Child, presaging the coming century as a period of intensified focus and progressive thinking around the rights, development and well-being of children. Taking inspiration from Key-and looking back through the twentieth century-this volume, published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, examines individual and collective visions for the material world of children, from utopian dreams for the "citizens of the future" to the dark realities of political conflict and exploitation. Surveying more than 100 years of toys, clothing, playgrounds, schools, children's hospitals, nurseries, furniture, posters, animation and books, this illustrated catalogue illuminates how progressive design has enhanced the physical, intellectual, and emotional development of children and, conversely, how models of children's play have informed experimental aesthetics and imaginative design thinking-engendering, in the process, reappraisals of some of the iconic names in twentieth-century design and enriching the unfolding narrative of modern design with other, less familiar figures.

Résumé:
Comparing the work of ''Archigram'' and ''High-Tech'' architects thematically, this book explores the historical and cultural context of London to reveal their influences and interconnections and why two such radical groups emerged from a seemingly conservative city. This book examines the relationships between the work of ''Archigram'' and that of the British ''High-Tech'' architects, groups that were based in London and developing in the 1960s and 70s. While one group consisted of academics and artists known for their humour and eccentricity and the other were a group of deadly serious architects emerging to international proliference, this book argues that they shared uncannily similar impulses. There is the self-evident commonality of language: overblown machines, kits-of-parts of pieces and components, and a disintegration of building as object in favour of the constituent elements. Underlying both movements is a mutual, undying optimism in technological process and technological expression. Set within the rich history and culture of London, the book makes its comparisons by exploring central shared ideas: utopia, engineering, theatricality, infrastructure and narrative, and the iconography of war machinery.

Résumé:
This book presents objects from the 21st Century by Spanish designers of the 21st century. This publication is motivated by the conviction that the concept of the object, as such, has been left behind. The universe of objects, or perhaps we would have to say of "offjects," put forward here is that of the work of those generation that graduated after the Barcelona Olympics: from 1992 into these first few years of the 21st century. What seems clear is that the classic definition of "design" has been rendered obsolete. In the first place because an object's conceptual and narrative charge largely determines its material and physical configuration, and in second place, because many present-day pieces are not produced industrially - some because their designers chose not to, others because they seem not to fit into excessively conservative industrial set-ups. What does seem to be the case is that we are dealing with a new typology of designer, more open, more multidisciplinary and more remote from the traditional commercial circuit, which is not to say remote from the market.

Résumé:
Like the other Sasek classics, this is a facsimile edition of the original book. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than 40 years later. Facts have been updated for the 21st-century, appearing on a "This is . . . Today" page at the back of the book. These charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's witty, playful narrative, make for a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember the series from their own childhoods. This is Hong Kong, first published in 1965, captures the enchantment and the contrasts of Hong Kong in the sixties. Roaring jets bring in the tourists; bamboo rickshaws taxi them through exotic streets fragrant with incense, roasting chestnuts, and honey-glazed Peking duck. Sasek shows you the sweeping panorama of gleaming Kowloon Bay framed by misty mountain ridges, then moves in for close-ups of laborers and hawkers, refugees from the mainland, and sailors of flame-red junks, and the strange "water people" who, it is said, never set foot on dry land.

Résumé:
Iwan Baan is one of today’s leading photographers of architecture and urban design. His images document the growth of global megacities and portray buildings by prominent contemporary architects including Herzog & de Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid. Baan’s vibrant realism presents architecture not as an abstract ideal, but as the setting of everyday life, an organic part of the urban fabric- be it suburban sprawl or the booming metropoles of Africa and Asia. This first comprehensive publication on the Dutch photographer’s work includes a number of Baan’s iconic works, many of which are familiar from magazines and books, as well as photographs of vernacular and informal architecture all around the world, from the round Tulou of southern China to the rock-hewn churches of Ethiopia. In addition to extensive image plates, the publication includes several text contributions on topics such as the current discourse on architectural photography and the classification and contextualization of Baan's work within it. Interviews and narrative text elements offer insight into the artist’s creative process.

Résumé:
The iconic architecture of the brutalist modernist megastructure of Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada built by architect Arthur Erickson in the 1960s is the site of the artistic research project into the history of this "radical campus" and its built environment by Vancouver and Vienna based artists Sabine Bitter and Helmut Weber. The collaborative research group, "Guests and Hosts", formed by Bitter & Weber and Métis scholar June Scudeler including Métis scholar and student Treena Chambers, Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk student Toni-Leah Yake, as well as Rachel Warwick and Hannah Campbell, has challenged the narrative of the radical campus, so called because it was informed by experimental concepts of learning and teaching. Using the spaces of a settler colonial institution, the project shifts perspectives by unsettling and challenging western- based concepts of pedagogy and knowledge. Combining archival photographic material, architectural photographs by the artists, and interventions into the institutional spaces by Guests and Hosts, the project performs the claim for places rather than spaces for Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.
