Résumé:
"The more needs a human being has, the more he exists," quips Lefebvre in a savage critique of consumerist society, first published in 1947. The French philosopher, historian and Marxist sociologist, who died this summer at age 90, meditates on the dehumanization and ugliness smuggled into daily life under cover of purity, utility, beauty. He deconstructs leisure as a form of social control, spanks surrealism for its turning away from reality, and attempts to get past the "mystification" inherent in bourgeois life by analyzing Chaplin's films, Brecht's epic theater, peasant festivals, daydreams, Rimbaud and the rhythms of work and relaxation. Rejecting the inauthentic, which he perceives in a church service or in rote work from which one is alienated, Lefebvre nevertheless seeks to unearth the human potential that may be inherent in such rituals.

Résumé:
The enormous increase of urbanisation characterising the 20th century often overlays the architectural approaches that took place when cities were founded and continue to have an effect into the present day. Many cities have been newly planned and built from the ground up and relevant new towns' yards are open in Asia and Africa. What they all have in common is the search for a new urban beginning. The aim of ambitious programs in the forthcoming decades should especially be a better control of the growth of metropolises and urbanised regional patterns, with a view to the environmental behaviour of people. This book, which not only presents fundamental international planning features, examines factors such as location, size and layout in particular, as well as the spatial value of new metropolises.

Résumé:
This is the latest of Donovan Wylie's (born 1971) books that explore the architecture of the Northern Ireland conflict. While Wylie's earlier publications document disappearing military structures, ''Housing Plans for the Future'' focuses on the legacy of architectural containment in urban areas today. Wylie took these photos during walks through a number of social-housing neighborhoods in inner-city Belfast, which look eerily similar. While the built environments at first appear benign, even mundane, sustained looking reveals how they purposely control vision and movement. Walls block vehicle access, houses are inverted to face away from neighboring communities and minimize potential antagonism, and excessive street lighting ensures visibility. These defensive structures, built in the 1970s and '80s and still populated today, are a powerful and largely unrecognized legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Résumé:
Long before Occupy, cities were the subject of much utopian thinking. They are the centers of capital accumulation as well as of revolutionary politics, where deeper currents of social and political change rise to the surface. Do the financiers and developers control access to urban resources or do the people? Who dictates the quality and organization of daily life? "Rebel Cities" places the city at the heart of both capital and class struggles, looking at locations ranging from Johannesburg to Mumbai, from New York City to São Paulo. Drawing on the Paris Commune as well as Occupy Wall Street and the London Riots, Harvey asks how cities might be reorganized in more socially just and ecologically sane ways—and how they can become the focus for anti-capitalist resistance.

Résumé:
Wood was essential to the survival of the Venetian Republic. To build its great naval and merchant ships, maintain its extensive levee system, construct buildings, fuel industries, and heat homes, Venice needed access to large quantities of oak and beech timber. A Forest on the Sea explores the history of this enterprise and Venice's efforts to extend state control over its natural resources. Karl Appuhn explains how Venice went from an isolated city completely dependent on foreign suppliers for wood to a regional state with a sophisticated system of administering and preserving forests. This publication offers a completely novel perspective on how Renaissance Europeans thought about the natural world. It sheds new light on how cultural conceptions about nature influenced political policies for resource conservation and land management in Venice.

Résumé:
The subject of light and lighting is more relevant than ever, as evidenced by the UNESCO global celebration of 2015 as the International Year of Light. The exhibition Nightscape 2050 by Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) explores the interactions between people, light, and cities in the year 2050. For LPA the word “nightscape” does not only refer to the evening view, but also includes the individual: “nightscape = humans and cities at night.” The emergence of new light sources such as LEDs, OLEDs, and lasers as well as the evolution of lighting-control technology in the 21st century may dramatically change our living environment. At the same time, numerous natural disasters, manmade disasters, and environmental changes have forced a discussion on how to approach energy consumption including how to power lighting.

Résumé:
The book discusses the ways in which the project can critically contribute to an affirmative biopolitical action of substantial emancipation; it considers space an essential agent, and not only a collective capital, or a support, for adapting our lives to the recent profoundly changed conditions. In all the new research on the future of urban space, the renewed interest in life, tragically affected by health, ecological and socio-political crises, raises a crucial theoretical and projective question: what role can space play in maintaining and promoting life in the broader sense of bíos? This book is based on the conviction that there is an urgent need to revisit the Foucauldian notion of biopolitics - free, however, from the privilege given to the goal of control - to rethink the project of the city and territory in transition in an affirmative and emancipatory way.

Résumé:
When we think of climate, the stories we tell about the future are often catastrophic: megastorms, crop failures, and heat waves loom over us, sending a signal that the problem is so vast, so complex, that it’s out of our control. That narrative is compelling for some, but leaves others feeling hopeless, helpless, and disillusioned. Even the most ardent champions of decarbonization sometimes focus more on sounding the alarm than on mapping out what success might look like. Without positive climate futures, visions of climate adaptation and resilience that we can work toward, it’s much harder to motivate broad-based efforts for change in the present. Through short speculative fiction, essays, and visual art, "Climate imagination" seeks to inspire a wave of narratives about what positive climate futures might look like for communities around the world.
