Résumé:
The articulation of transitional space forms a key element in Japanese architecture and its relationship to landscape. Climate and cultural history have shaped myriad forms and expressions of these spaces, which connect as well as separate. We pass through or dwell within them; these transitional spaces differentiate between one space and another, inside and outside, public and private, our body and what surrounds it. This issue of Pamphlet documents a conversation about six residential houses in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. The houses and their surroundings were captured through sound recordings and Point Cloud laser scanning, the results of which were processed into short videos.

Résumé:
Solid, earthbound edifices of iron, brick, and stone made way for towers of steel and plate glass, imparting a striking new look to Chicago's growing urban landscape. Thomas Leslie reveals the daily struggles, technical breakthroughs, and negotiations that produced these magnificent buildings. He also considers how the city's infamous political climate contributed to its architecture, as building and zoning codes were often disputed by shifting networks of rivals, labor unions, professional organizations, and municipal bodies. Featuring more than a hundred photographs and illustrations of the city's physically impressive and beautifully diverse architecture, Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871-1934 highlights an exceptionally dynamic, energetic period of architectural progress in Chicago.

Résumé:
Cities have contributed for centuries to the promotion of some of humanity’s greatest ideas, we must now urgently include them as among the principal players in the environmental debate and at the forefront of any policy tackling and countering – possibly reversing - climate change. Nevertheless, even today one of the most significant technologies capable of absorbing CO2 and restoring our environment is photosynthesis. Planting trees, in addition to protecting existing natural areas and biodiversity, together with de-carbonization, renewable energies, digitalization, smart mobility and the circular economy could be the set of strategies necessary to tackle climate change. Today the effects of the Anthropocene age are ever more visible, changing our environment and affecting every species that lives within it. ''Green obsession'' offers a path to be taken, a hard but still necessary paradigm shift – even for architecture and urbanism – that aims to give a voice to this much needed ecological transition. This book aims to unveil the processes and the complexity involved in the search for a new kind of urbanism, while raising questions and opening old wounds related to the relationship between the human species and Nature and finally putting these fragments together to create a portrait of our era. We need to conceive cities as new green catalysts. Now more than ever, it is essential to act together as separate individuals and professionals, joining the cause as members of the global community with a shared environmental strategy. We all have to open the era of a new alliance between Nature and City.

Résumé:
"Monsters and Mutants" spotlights Archi-Tectonics’ novel architectural taxonomies that were implemented in the firm’s award-winning master plan from the 2023 Asian Games. It presents a provocation for a new approach to reverse the consequences of the Anthropocene, by learning from plant intelligence. New York-based design firm Archi-Tectonics’ recent research on climate change opened up a field unknown to architecture so far. By emulating organic intelligence, Winka Dubbeldam and her team created a series of new architectural taxonomies: Hybrids and Earth Buildings, part nature, part architecture. Appropriating organic intelligence, these structures are at once resilient, resource-efficient, and beneficial for humans and non-humans, capable of healing our ecosystem.

Résumé:
Robust architecture is designed to meet needs; its structures are sufficient, resilient and suited to the location. It embraces the potential of simplicity, traditional building methods and alternative ways of building sustainable architecture, with an emphasis on local building materials, solid craftsmanship, proven construction methods and user participation. Its design strategies, combined with state-of-the-art planning tools and research findings, look ahead to a climate-positive future. The book gives detailed information on the concepts behind Robust Architecture and Low-Tech Design. It illuminates various strategies and demonstrates how they can be easily implemented. Examples of realised projects with very different demands and requirement profiles show how straightforward robust building can be.

Résumé:
Emerging in the death throes of colonial rule, the story of ''Tropical Modernism'' is one of politics and power, decolonization and defiance. Its leading proponents, British architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry, adapted a utopian Bauhaus-derived Modernist aesthetic to hot and humid conditions. After Independence, ''Tropical Modernism'' was championed by leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru and Kwame Nkrumah as a symbol of freedom, progressiveness and internationalism in monumental projects such as Chandigarh in Punjab planned by Le Corbusier and Black Star Square in Accra designed by Victor Adegbite. Scrutinizing the colonial narratives surrounding ''Tropical Modernism'', and foregrounding the experience of African and Indian practitioners, this book reassesses an architectural style which has increasing relevance in today’s changing climate.
