Architects the world over are familiar with the name Bauhaus. A century after it was founded, the principles, philosophies and memories of this avant-garde school are still very much alive. Bauhaus is a legend, and its legacy continues to shape our world in many different ways. To mark its centenary, Detail has produced an autograph book in which 100 architects from all over the world wish the school a happy birthday. Their short texts, photos and sketches reveal what Bauhaus means to them. The result is a colourful album of anecdotes, experiences and personal stories that will raise a smile or make you think. Rather than defining what Bauhaus is, the short statements show the extent to which Bauhaus is still relevant today. Details

Résumé:
The Post-War period of progressive civic architecture and art gave rise to some of the UK's most important pieces of publically owned artwork. From the Chadwick figures in Roehampton and a bronze Hepworth in Cardiff to the less well-known Cuminsky murals in Skelmersdale and the vivid Schottland shapes in Warwick, these works of art have become familiar companions, backdrops to British lives. Now with the increased interest in the buildings and architects of the Post-War era the time is right to consider the role of sculpture in these Modernist landscapes. There is also an urgency to this photographic survey, as many crucial works have been lost or destroyed. As acclaimed photographer Simon Phipps journeyed around the UK he uncovered forgotten treasures as well as unexplained losses.

Leaders, civic groups, and architects worked together to reconceive the city through local and federal initiatives that aimed to address the problems that confronted Pittsburgh’s postwar development. 'Imagining the Modern' untangles this complicated relationship with modern architecture and planning through a history of Pittsburgh’s major sites, protagonists, and voices of intervention.

Résumé:
Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright may be the Midwest’s (and the nation’s) most famous architects, but the region has always been a fertile ground for builders master and amateur. ''Midwest architecture journeys'' takes readers on a trip to visit some of the region’s most inventive buildings by architects such as Bertrand Goldberg, Bruce Goff, and Lillian Leenhouts. It also includes stops at less obvious but equally daring and defining sites, such as indigenous mounds, grain silos, parking lots, flea markets, and abandoned warehouses. Through dozens of essays written by architects, critics, and journalists, ''Midwest architecture journeys'' argues that what might seem flat is actually monumental, and what we assume to be boring is brimming with experimentation.

Résumé:
A century after its founding by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany, as an "experimental laboratory of the future," who are the pioneering experimentalists who reinscribe or resist Bauhaus traditions? This book explores the varied legacies, influences, and futures of the Bauhaus. Many of the animating issues of the Bauhaus—its integration of research, teaching, and practice; its experimentation with materials; its democratization of design; its open-minded, heterogeneous approach to ideas, theories, methods, and styles—remain relevant. The contributors to "Bauhaus futures" address these but go further, considering issues that design has largely ignored for the last hundred years: gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and disability. Their contributions take the form of essays, photo-essays, interviews, manifestos, diagrams, and even a play. They discuss, among other things, the Bauhaus curriculum and its contemporary offshoots; Bauhaus legacies at the MIT Media Lab, Black Mountain College, and elsewhere; the conflict between the Bauhaus ideal of humanist universalism and current approaches to design concerned with race and justice; designed objects, from the iconic to the precarious; textile and weaving work by women in the Bauhaus and the present day; and design and technology.
