Description:
The project series documents "Human Wall", an installation by Pettena presented at the Galleria Federico Luger in Milan, in 2012. The installation consists of a large rectangular surface handmade with clay and covered in imprints of hands and fingers. "A wall that is described as "human," certainly not just because it is made by man, but rather because the latter's intervention find expression in the choice of a natural material and in the sign that he leaves on its surface with his fingers." [1] Other editions of this installation were also presented at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art in Salt Lake City, in 2012, and the exhibition "Architetture Naturali/Gianni Pettena" at the Kunst Meran/Merano Arte in Meran, in 2017. The project series contains design studies for the texturing of the wall, photographs of the installation, a video of the montage of the installation in Milan in 2011. This project series documents the design of the residence of J.D. Crashley at 3 Old George Place in Toronto, Ontario from 1956-1965. The office identified the project number as 5614. This project consisted of the design for a T-shaped, one storey home for J.D. Crashley, who was a prominent Toronto entrepreneur and president of the Art Gallery of Ontario in the 1970s. Only the garage was visible from the street, with one of the stems of the T extending over into the adjacent ravine, creating two levels to the residence. The exterior of the residence was largely field stone with brick on some walls. The construction of this home is recorded under a separate project number, assigned by the office (see project series AP018.S1.1959.PR03 in this fonds). Today, the house enjoys special heritage status in Ontario, although the highly controversial addition of a second floor was recently completed. The project is recorded through drawings dating from approximately 1956-1959. The majority of these drawings are original design drawings.

Three site-independent proposals are outlined for sea, land and air transportation: 'Dock Ahoy', a proposal for docks; 'Trucksafe', a truck park; and 'Air Portable', a limited-life airport. "The projects are concerned with finding flexible solutions to problems which occur when conditions change within a transportation network [...] the projects should be a further physical recognition of the value of short term toys." (Cedric Price, textual records). Preliminary design development drawings show plans for parking lot layouts for 'Air Portable'. Charts and graphs include aircraft and boat capacity studies, runway and cargo studies, and value/weight import graphs. Textual records contain correspondence regarding a possible exhibition of this material at the Walker Art Center in 1980. Some material from this file was published in 'Cedric Price-Works II' (London: Architectural Press, 1984), 18, 31. File contains conceptual drawings, design development drawings, and textual records.

Project series AP154.S1.1979.PR01, George & Annette Murphy Center at Asphalt Green, New York, N.Y. (1979), documents an executed project to recycle a municipal asphalt plant into a youth sports and arts center. Clients for the project were the New York City Department of General Services and the Neighborhood Committee for the Asphalt Green, chaired by Dr. George Murphy. The asphalt plant was a parabolic structure built in the 1940s by the firm Kahn and Jacobs. Pasanella + Klein worked on the adaptive reuse project with HOK, successors to Kahn and Jacobs. The transformed interior includes two gymnasia of different sizes, a running track, art and photography studios, offices, lockers, showers and a theatre.
