Résumé:
In the decades after World War II, artists and designers of the land art movement used the natural landscape to create monumental site-specific artworks. Second Site offers a powerful meditation on how environmental change and the passage of time alter and transform the meanings—and sometimes appearances—of works created to inhabit a specific place. James Nisbet offers fresh approaches to well-known artworks by Ant Farm, Rebecca Belmore, Nancy Holt, Richard Serra, and Robert Smithson. He also examines the work of less recognized artists such as Agnes Denes, Bonnie Devine, and herman de vries. Nisbet tracks the vicissitudes wrought by climate change and urban development on site-specific artworks, taking readers from the plains of Amarillo, Texas, to a field of volcanic rock in Mexico City, to abandoned quarries in Finland.

Fashion is political. From the red carpets of the Met Gala to online fast fashion, clothes tell a story of inequality, racism and climate crisis. In this book, Tansy E. Hoskins unpicks the threads of capitalist industry to reveal the truth about our clothes. Fashion brands entice us to consume more by manipulating us to feel ugly, poor and worthless, sentiments that line the pockets of billionaires exploiting colonial supply chains. Garment workers on poverty pay risk their lives in dangerous factories, animals are tortured, fossil fuels extracted and toxic chemicals spread just to keep this season's collections fresh. This volume goes beyond ethical fashion and consumer responsibility showing that if we want to feel comfortable in our clothes, we need to reshape the system and ensure this is not our last season.

Résumé:
While most books about Gothic cathedrals focus on a particular building or on the cathedrals of a specific region, this publication considers the idea of the cathedral as a humanly created space. It explores why medieval people built Gothic cathedrals, how they built them, what conception of the divine lay behind their creation, and how religious and secular leaders used cathedrals for social and political purposes. The author describes the difficulties master-builders faced in scheduling construction that wouldn’t be completed during their own lifetimes, how they managed without adequate numeric systems or paper on which to make detailed drawings, and how climate, natural disasters, wars, variations in the hours of daylight throughout the year, and the celebration of holy days affected the pace and timing of work.

Today the human impact on our planet can hardly be underestimated. Climate change, population explosion, genetic manipulation, digital networks, plastic islands floating in the oceans. This book explores our changing notion of nature. How nature has become one of the most successful products of our time, much of what we perceive as nature is merely a simulation although a romanticized idea of a balanced, harmonic, inherently good and threatened entity. How evolution continues nonetheless. How technology - traditionally created to protect us from the forces of nature - gives rise to a next nature, that is just as wild, cruel, unpredictable and threatening as ever. How we are playing with fire again and again. How we should be careful in doing so, yet how this is also what makes us human.

Résumé:
Further extending Jonathan Hill's investigation of authorship, this book recognizes the weather as a creative architectural force alongside the designer and user. Although acknowledging the influence of the client, contractor and engineer, the relations between the designer, user and weather are the focus of this book. Environmental discussions in architecture tend to focus on the practical or the poetic but here they are considered together. Rather than investigate architecture's relations to the weather in isolation, they are integrated into a wider discussion of cultural and social influences on architecture. The analysis of weather's effects on the design and experience of specific buildings and gardens is interwoven with a historical survey of changing attitudes to the weather in the arts, sciences and society, leading to a critical re-evaluation of contemporary responses to climate change.

Résumé:
As a concept, Emergence has captured the zeitgeist, embodying the pervasive cultural interest in genetics and biological sciences. In the sciences, Emergence is an explanation of how natural systems have evolved and maintained themselves, and it has also been applied to artificial intelligence, information systems, economics and climate studies. The potential of the mathematics of Emergence that underlie the complex systems of nature is now being realised by engineers and architects for the production of complex architectural forms and effects, in advanced manufacturing of ‘smart’ materials and processes, and in the innovative designs of active structures and responsive environments. This book provides a detailed exploration of the architectural and engineering consequences of this paradigm, and a detailed analysis of geometries, processes and systems to be incorporated into new methods of working.

Résumé:
Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture. For the first time, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together in one volume, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

Résumé:
On the Water: Palisade Bay is the collaborative initiative of a group of engineers, architects, landscape architects, planners and students to imagine a "soft infrastructure" for the New York/New Jersey Upper Bay by developing interconnected infrastructures and landscapes which rethink the thresholds of water, land andcity. The proposal is sited on the water, along the coastal edge and within the local communities. It presents a new coastal planning strategy which not only mitigates potential damage from storms but also provides new ground forrecreation, ecologies, agriculture and urban development. With climate change and sea level rise acting as catalysts for this work, a quantitative analysis of dynamic systems serves as the foundation for this new soft infrastructure whichboth enriches the ecology of the urban estuary and creates a vibrant culture on the water.

Résumé:
This volume documents a series of events that took place in the summer of 2008 as part of the Summer on the Elbinsel festival in Wihelmsburg, Austria, which boasted a diverse group of international artists, including Critical Art Ensemble, Mike Davis, Lisa Heldke, Dan Peterman, Susan Leibovitz Steinman and Thomas Heyd. Comprising two volumes, this edition questions the contemporary grasp of the culture/nature dichotomy. Examining the functionality of the master plan in the quest for a socially and ecologically fair future, the book presents as alternatives cooperative planning processes, artistic interventions and philosophical reflections. Community gardening, gentrification processes and citizens' participation are among the themes that the participants in this timely project address, in their aim to use sustainable artistic methods to reflect an urban response to climate change.

Résumé:
This book brings together a provocative series of essays, conversations, and design proposals that attempt to intensify the potential of the multidisciplinary discourse developing in response to the Anthropocene thesis for contemporary architecture scholarship and practice. Research regarding the significance and consequence of anthropogenic transformations of the earth's land, oceans, biosphere and climate have demonstrated that, from a wide variety of perspectives, it is almost certain that humans have initiated a new geological epoch, their own. First labeled the Anthropocene by the chemist Paul Crutzen, the consideration of the merits of the Anthropocene thesis by the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the International Union of Geological Sciences has also garnered the attention of philosophers, historians, and legal scholars, as well as an increasing number of researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds.
