Résumé:
There is hardly another topic that fascinates architects more than new materials, with their previously unimagined properties and enchanting haptic surfaces. Yet if you look at built reality, these hardly play a role. On the contrary, the international trend continues to move towards natural surfaces made of wood, brick and natural stone. As aesthetically and ecologically meaningful as they may be, this development becomes alarming when buildings and interiors in southern China, Paris or Copenhagen become indistinguishable. The examples in this issue show, however, that individual solutions are still possible even within a narrow range of materials and colours. Just a few years ago, natural stone and solid wood – building materials used today by the luxury sector – were cheaper than concrete and veneer in countries like Portugal, as the Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura explains to us in an interview. In his eyes, the design elements of architecture remain the same throughout history, only the materials change.

‘Build, build, build – as quickly and cost-effectively as possible’: this mantra can currently be heard over and over and again in the political arena. Questions as to what sustainable building actually means and what level of comfort buildings should achieve need to be raised. Rainer Vallentin addresses these topics in his article in this issue, while Hans Schmid and Wilfried Doppler focus on the effects of contemporary building on birdlife. In addition, DETAIL green reports on a facade renovation rich in pan-European symbolism, Europe’s largest ‘vertical garden’ and promising new developments in the colouring and surface design of solar modules. After all, design aspirations should be retained even though energy standards in the building industry are becoming increasingly ambitious.

Between art and architecture, the work of Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen is a consistent mix of geometric, spatial, and structural experimentation, where each piece is conceived as a variation within a series. The introductory text by Fernando Pérez Oyarzun unveils the key aspects of the work of the Chilean architects and their particular way of understanding architecture, and is followed by a chronological journey through 32 works and projects developed since 2002, when they set up their studio in Concepción, 500 kilometers south of Santiago. This itinerary includes the bold prisms of their first houses which brought them world renown as well as their latest projects.

A huge endeavour in the making, the research, documentation, and production of materials for this publication have lasted four years. Given the relatively unknown nature of Nyberg’s work, the narratives herein are derived from direct sources, either through archival research or interviews with the architect’s surviving collaborators. Matthew Hall headed the investigation into Nyberg’s currently endangered body of work in Sweden, which ranges from homes and row houses to administrative, care, and maintenance facilities.

Résumé:
For nearly a thousand years, the gun has played a key role in shaping histories, societies, and lives. Incalculable sums of creativity, innovation, and design have been dedicated to this tool which continues to evolve in unexpected ways. While the gun has always been valued for its usefulness in hunting, sport, and war, it has also been appreciated—even fetishized—for its aesthetic appeal. Nevertheless, the gun is an object whose primary function is to kill. Its destructive and deadly purpose imbues the gun with a unique potency—both symbolic and real. Hence, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to consider the gun as just another tool or designed object. Over time, social, political, and economic forces—particularly in the United States—have created a context that often forces individuals into “pro-gun” and “anti-gun” factions, leaving little room to critically study the gun as an object or consider the complexity of various perspectives. Today, it is estimated that there are approximately 875 million small arms throughout the world. As this number continues to climb and the surrounding debate only grows more polarized, it is time to holistically examine the past, present, and future of the gun
