Résumé:
This book examines modern-day Switzerland and its changing spatial reality. Describing settlement areas as either ”urban” or ”rural” is no longer apt as we now live in a collage of urban, suburban, and rural elements which together form conglomerations with several centres over large areas of land. This requires new political solutions, challenging the institutional framework of federalism and the concept of local government. The study comprises contributions by experts from the fields of architecture, sociology, geography, politics and economics, which take into account the various perspectives. The prominent Dutch architect Winy Maas from MVRDV presents as an outsider a qualified vision for a Switzerland of the future, and also provides visual material to illustrate other contributions.

Résumé:
Yona Friedman presents a personal selection of half a century of his work. In 1958 Yona Friedman published his first manifesto on "mobile architecture" and founded GEAM (Groupe d'Etude d'Architecture Mobile), which proposed different strategies and actions geared to the adaptation of architectural creation to modern user requirements concerning social and physical mobility. In this initial manifesto, Friedman points out that architectural knowledge cannot be the exclusive property of professionals and specialists, and suggests writing guides ("manuals"), which explain topics related to architecture and urban planning in clear and simple terms. Following some recent publications that have reasserted the importance of Friedman's work, Pro Domo is "a collection of fragments of scattered topics," a set of "milestones" selected by the author himself. In his words, these highlights are not meant as a testament nor do they, form a coherent whole." Instead, they form a personal selection chosen according to their sentimental value and span fifty-year period of production dating from the foundation of GEAM. The book includes building structure studies, urban design theories, observations on regional development, as well as design manuals for self-construction and competition projects.

"Summerfolk" explores the ways in which Russia’s turbulent past has shaped the function of the dacha and attitudes toward it. The book also demonstrates the crucial role that the dacha has played in the development of Russia’s two most important cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg, by providing residents with a refuge from the squalid and crowded metropolis. Like the suburbs in other nations, the dacha form of settlement served to alleviate social anxieties about urban growth.

Résumé:
This monograph brings together the work of the Spanish architect and urban planner Manuel de Solà-Morales in book form for the first time. The publication concentrates on his most important projects and realizations of recent years. Solà-Morales has achieved successful interventions in the urban landscape in many places in Europe: from Antwerp to Trieste, from Groningen to Porto, and from Barcelona to The Hague. For Solà-Morales the city does not consist of abstractions, but of concrete, tangible things. His projects could be regarded as an urban architecture, at the interface of architecture and urban planning. By intervening in this physical reality in a precise manner, with a building, with public space, or sometimes with nothing more than the layout of a public space, but always with concrete things, Solà-Morales effects changes in the city that often transcend the physical or spatial dimensions of the intervention. All the projects are documented extensively in word and image. Besides texts by Manuel de Solà-Morales himself, the book includes a comprehensive essay by Kenneth Frampton about the architect's work and ideas.

Résumé:
Mass housing in post-war socialist countries was a quick and effective way to provide homes for the expanding city populations after WWII, but after the collapse of the Soviet Bloc the fate of these constructions became uncertain. While modernist estates are being renovated or prematurely demolished, their tenants remain undaunted. They have lived through the buildings’ golden years and darker times. For the last decade, Zupagrafika has documented the housing estates erected in Central and Eastern Europe, still perceived by many as ‘eyesores,’ through photographs and illustrated paper models. The Tenants features over 40 housing projects in 37 different cities of the former Eastern Bloc and ex-Yugoslavia. From Berlin to Norilsk, and all the way through Kyiv to Tallinn, the album portrays the inhabitants of those complexes holding models of their homes, while sharing the stories of lives lived in the prefab panel blocks. Includes a foreword by the sociologist and urban researcher Maciej Frackowiak and an index of the featured housing estates, providing an insight into their history. The portraits were taken by David Navarro and Martyna Sobecka, with contributions by local photographers.

Résumé:
For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure. The first volume deals with the various types of the courtyard house, which utilizes the courtyard as an intimate outdoor living space. A presentation of the courtyard as a building block of the city is followed by coverage of the complete spectrum of types - cluster, network, carpet, terraces, etc. The second volume is devoted to the various types of row house, a particularly widespread form of residential structure. A general discussion of the row as organizing principle – the row as urban building block, linear space, ways of handling corners – is followed by the systematic presentation of the different types.
