Résumé:
Universal design offers a paradigm shift in how we understand and perceive human beings and the diversity of abilities within architecture and urban planning. The concept introduces a new approach to core aspects of architecture: sensory experiences, social sustainability, and architectural qualities and meaning. In "Universal design in architecture: On enabling and empowering a diverse population", Camilla Ryhl engages in dialogue with ten architects about their practices and understanding of universal design. The book introduces a model for applying universal design at three differing levels, providing a practical framework for creating inclusive and accessible spaces. It is an essential read for architects, designers, and anyone interested in creating spaces that harmonize with the varied abilities and experiences of all individuals.

Résumé:
The People’s Action against the Nordic Áltá-Guovdageaidnu Waterway (c. 1978-82) radically shook the course of history in the region. Its call to ''let the river live'' clamored against the construction of a large dam across the Alltáeatnu river in Norway. The action grew to an unexpectedly broad movement of solidarity across civil society—Sámi and Norwegian, as well as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples internationally—in which Sámi artists played a pivotal role. ''Let the river flow'' takes this eco-Indigenous rebellion, the first in Europe and inspirational worldwide, to reflect on events at the time and their correlations with international artists’ eco actions today. It is conceived as a reader, and addresses innovations in political organizing, new influences of Indigenous thinking on contemporary politics and the centrality of artists within the constellation of these activities. It also considers other Indigenous artists’ protests that happened in parallel to the actions mentioned.

Résumé:
The art of Anselm Kiefer is rich with references to writers, philosophers, and poets, and his relationship with Paul Celan has been the most complex and intense of these dialogues with the past. Celan's poetry, inextricably linked with the memory of the Holocaust, has haunted Kiefer's work for more than twenty-five years and has influenced him on every level, from the naming of works and exhibitions to the incorporation of symbolic materials from Celan's imagery—sand, straw, hair, and ashes—into his paintings. Like other German artists of his generation, Kiefer began by questioning his own artistic heritage, focusing on the iconographic and mythological elements of German culture that had been taken over by Nazi propaganda, and subsequently repressed and buried deep in the collective unconscious. It was his encounter with Celan's work in the early 1980s that first enabled him to escape from the vicious circle of fascination and disgust at the cultural ties that bound him to the Third Reich, leading him to confront the subject of the Holocaust and Jewish memory as a whole and to embrace this body of traditions within his art. Magnificently illustrated throughout with reproductions of Kiefer's best-known works, this book explores the intricate web of associations between the poet and the painter, a network that is extended to embrace other artistic and literary figures such as Ingeborg Bachmann and Joseph Beuys. 157 illustrations, 140 in color.

If we ask where the curating of art occurs these days--in which places, which kinds of place, and how--apparent answers immediately appear: everywhere, expanding as if to ubiquity. Yet at the same time, we sense, with fragile purpose. In this, his newest book, Terry Smith explores the contemporary contexts of curating, looking for less apparent answers. It will map the dimensions of the visual arts exhibitionary complex, including its dialectical dance between institutionalization and deinstitutionalization; the persistence of professional classifications of curatorship; the given and changing categories of art exhibitions; the increasing variety of curatorial styles; the underthinking about publics; and (undistracted by curationism) the changing roles of art making and exhibiting art within an exhibitory iconomy that is at once viral and consumptive. A mapping of this kind might help us towards some answers to the more important questions: why curate art these days and in the name of which interests?

Résumé:
"Patterned Ground" unravels the entangled relationships between nature and culture. Around 100 entries by leading names in new geography and related disciplines focus on various ‘objects’ in the landscape – from beaches to battlefields, bees to horses, police stations to post-offices, trees to tractors. Each piece, written by an expert in the field, explores the way in which we understand that object and its relationship to the world around it. This book is neither encyclopædia nor dictionary, but a knowledgeable and impassioned engagement with the world. In this sense, it chimes with earlier experiments in understanding the earth and its landscapes, whether these endeavours have been conducted within the sciences, the social sciences or the arts. "Patterned Ground" backtracks from familiar and obvious ways of seeing patterns in the world, and discovers it anew. In this way, it opens up new possibilities for thinking about the relationships between ourselves, objects and the ground on which we walk.

Résumé:
''The lives of images,'' edited by Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, is a set of contemporary thematic readers designed for educators, students, practicing photographers, and others interested in the ways images function within a wider set of cultural practices. The series tracks the many movements and 'lives' of images—their tendency to accumulate, circulate, and transform through different geographies, cultures, processes, institutions, states, uses, and times. Volume 1 of the series, ''Repetition, reproduction, and circulation,'' addresses the multiple life cycles of the image—its modes of dispersion, reception, consumption, and aggregation—and the significance of technological reproduction for contemporary forms of social, cultural, and political life. The image is considered as both a tool for liberation and a means of repression within the evolving structures of modern life. The essays consider the implications of the nature and effect of the reproducible image on the categories, shapes, and aims of contemporary art and society. Further grounded by two interviews with practitioners in the field, ''Repetition, reproduction, and circulation'' promises to be an accessible, rigorous, and timely resource for all students, educators, and practitioners of photography.

Résumé:
This book consists of two parts. Within each chapter, the left-hand page shows the work of an artist and the right-hand page that of an architect. This device of presenting the work in pairs has been contrived to emphasize the remarkable degree of correspondence between art and architecture and to highlight the common conceptual and physical qualities of the projects. Throughout, designers, landscape architects and lighting engineers are included in the architectural category, as their working structures, contractually defined to provide a quantifiable design service to the client, are alike. The works are assembled according to their design concept and arranged in eight sections, which identify the most important characteristics of each project. 'Barometer' focuses on the connection of the work to its natural environment, and 'Passage' investigates the relationship of space perception to physical movement. 'Reflection' looks at the suggestive power of the double image, and 'Light' compiles examples of the material quality of luminous matter. The manipulation of our habitual point of view is the subject of the chapter called 'Observation', while 'Excavation', as the title suggests, deals with the exploration of negative space. The 'Sound' chapter reviews the pervasive presence of resonant structures, and 'Memory' is dedicated to the physicality of our recollections.

Résumé:
"India by Design : colonial history and cultural display" maps for the first time a series of historical events - from the Raj in the mid-nineteenth century up to the present day - through which India was made fashionable to Western audiences within the popular cultural arenas of the imperial metropole. Situated at the convergence of discussions in anthropology, art history, museum studies, and postcolonial criticism, this dynamic study investigates with vivid historical detail how Indian objects, bodies, images, and narratives circulated through metropolitan space and acquired meaning in an emergent nineteenth-century consumer economy. Through an examination of India as represented in department stores, museums, exhibitions, painting, and picture postcards of the era, the book carefully confronts the problems and politics of postcolonial display and offers an original and provocative account of the implications of colonial practices for visual production in our contemporary world.

Résumé:
"The ecologies of the building envelope" theorizes the building envelope as a literal embodiment of the social, political, technological, and economic contingencies which have become embedded within it over the last century, analyzing the historical lineages, heroes and villains that helped define the complex material ecologies we see within the envelope today. While the façade is one of the most thoroughly theorized elements of architecture, it is also one of the most questioned since the end of the 19th century. Within the discipline of architecture, the traditional understanding of the façade focuses primarily on semiotic and compositional operations (such as proportional laws and linguistic codes), which are deployed on the building's surface. In contrast to this, our material and environmental theory of the envelope proposes that the exponential development of building technologies since the mid-19th century, coupled with new techniques of management and regulation, have diminished the compositional and ornamental capacities of the envelope in favor of material, quantitative, and technical performances. Rather than producing a stylistic analysis of the façade, we investigate the historical lineages of the performances, components, assembly types, and material entanglements that constitute the contemporary building envelope.
