Résumé:
Urban theory traditionally links modernity to the city, to the historical emergence of certain forms of subjectivity and the rise of important developments in culture, arts and architecture. This is often in response to technological, economic and societal transformations in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries in select Euro-American metropolises. In contrast, non-Western cities in the modern period are often considered through the lens of Westernization and development. How do we account for urban modernity in "other" cities?

Résumé:
A-Frame constructions emerged in the mid-20th century and have been forgotten for decades. In recent years we are seeing how the spirit of A-Frame style houses is gradually being revived by avant-garde architects who have adapted this approach to more modern times. It is not uncommon nowadays to find examples of modern houses with A-Frame architecture as a hallmark in leading design magazines. This type of construction stands out for its structural simplicity, which in most cases reduces costs, and also for its great capacity for thermal and acoustic insulation, greater speed of construction, elimination of the need for columns, greater strength and structural consistency, among many other benefits. A-Frame homes have a better environmental impact due to energy savings in both construction and utility costs, not to mention a smaller carbon footprint for the environment.

The wide variety of modern lighting concepts in one publication. With the release of the reference book "Light Perspectives - between culture and technology" at the end of October, ERCO will be making an inspirational contribution towards communication between designers and engineers, building owners and planners, professionals and laymen. What are the intrinsic qualities of light? How are the techniques and design approaches implemented in architecture? And, how are abstract concepts conveyed with the help of lighting qualities? These are all questions that the book answers. The 21 chapters - divided into the three sections Light, Space and Perspectives - cover the actual qualities of light, the relationship between light and space and, finally, the intrinsic dimension of light as it relates to culture.

Résumé:
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is renowned for its palaces and museums, its craft traditions and its distinctive pink shops and houses. A planned city within walls, it was built in pre-modern times according to a distinctive Indian theory of architecture known as vastu vidya. As architecture subsequently developed in India, in response to British and latterly post-colonial policies, this system became increasingly marginalized and fragmented, decreasingly practised and understood. Taking Jaipur as a test case, the authors use this lost tradition to explain historic Indian buildings according to the rationale of their original architects. The authors also examine the place of traditional architectural theory in a modern context – Post-Modern architecture in India has often sought to recapture a spirit of the past, and yet been reluctant to engage with traditional theory. By chronicling the gradual eclipse of Indian architectural theory, the authors explain how this reluctance arose; they also describe the need and the terms for a fresh engagement with it. The result is an architectural biography of a city, and a concise history of Indian architectural theory over the last 300 years.
