During its years of greatest influence, it subjected every aspect of art, belief, society, and labour to intense intellectual scrutiny, using the Middle Ages as a platform from which to judge the modern world.’ It is the unique merit of "The Gothic Revival" that it gives as much attention to the ideas that gave Gothic architecture its emotional and intellectual power as it does to its great monuments. The eighteenth century admired the Gothic for its sense of decay and melancholy; the nineteenth century first cherished its religious piety, then its superb engineering. In the course of the Revival the Gothic was attached to social movements of every sort – from political liberalism to patriotic nationalism to labour reform. Like Marxism, which also drew lessons from medieval society, the Gothic Revival seemed to offer a comprehensive response to the dislocations and traumas of the Industrial Revolution. By the early twentieth century, the Gothic Revival had outlived its ideals. In recent years, however, the climate of opinion has changed, and we are ready to understand, appreciate and learn from it.

Neoptolemos Michaelides (1920–92) was a pioneer of modern architecture in Cyprus. His designs are based on the desire to develop principles that combine modern architecture with traditional Cypriot construction methods—and the knowledge preserved therein regarding the choice of materials, geographical orientation, natural climate control, and the internal organization of buildings. These principles are rooted in his studies of Western philosophy and even more in his affinity with Eastern philosophical thought, especially the spiritual importance of a harmonious relationship with nature. Between his respect for pure, natural materials and his awareness of elemental forces, his buildings seem both to worship nature and to evoke the Shintoism of Japan. In this first-ever book on the architecture of Neoptolemos Michaelides, the distinguished American architectural historian Kenneth Frampton presents his work in two essays. The first, illustrated with historical photos and documents, is dedicated to thirteen of Michaelides’ most important buildings. The second takes a close look at Michaelides’ own home in Nicosia. The book explores the intimate entanglements of the microbes within bodies and buildings over the last 10,000 years, culminating in the antibiotic philosophy of contemporary architecture. The diseases of our time are diseases of the built environment. The deadly combination of rapidly declining microbial diversity and rising antibiotic-resistant bacteria is as great a threat as climate change. Hostility to bacteria has to give way to new forms of hospitality from a more symbiotic architecture that learns from bacteria, embracing them and reconnecting with soil, plants and other species. Buildings based on fear of bacteria, which is to say fear of life itself, must give way to buildings learning from models of coexistence based on bacteria themselves. In Florencia Pita and Jackilin Bloom’s studio, 'Easy Office', students experimented with ways of generating new spatial, formal, material, and narrative ideas through the processes of collecting, collaging, and casting everyday objects. The studio considered notions of the creative office and the workplace based on the unexpected space, form, and materiality that emerged from these processes. Students in Omar Gandhi’s studio, 'Where the Wild Things Are', designed a campus of creatures for Rabbit Snare Gorge on the north coast of Cape Breton Island. They focused on a series of interventions that used vernacular approaches to produce specific functions, develop a process or ideology, and frame sensory experience. The students explored how Nova Scotia’s regional architecture takes advantage of phenomenological opportunities available on the site and inspires new responses to climate and geography.

Over the past decade, a growing number of artists, theorists, curators, and researchers have moved from ''institutional critique'' to ''infrastructural critique,'' or toward ''infrastructural speculation,'' in which they explore the potential of creative infrastructure-related visions and scenarios. In attempts to counter the impasse of ''the cancelled future,'' art has immersed itself in systemic critiques and propositional thinking, addressing major challenges, such as the rampant financialization of the economy and runaway climate change. From questions around space settlements to the possibility of repurposing blockchain infrastructures and financial instruments for redistributive purposes, and from the diagrammatic potential of infrastructural thinking in artistic practices to scenario planning and economic strategizing, this collection of new essays brings together critical analysis from a broad group of contributors engaged in the revisioning of our infrastructural futures.
