Résumé:
The Hans van Heeswijk architecture firm was founded in Amsterdam in 1985, and it has designed and realized a great variety of projects, among them offices, public buildings, museums, bridges, renovations, refurbishments, interiors and product design. Those projects are without exception matchlessly lucid and crafted to a standard rarely seen, particularly in an economy where tight budgets are the rule. Their forms, reticent at first, become articulate at close range. Each encounter with them seems right--thus the aura of tranquility, typical for buildings composed with great care and attention. This monograph deals with the works and ideas of Hans van Heeswijk architects over the last decade, including the recent commission for the refurbishment of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam.

Saarinen's buildings are famous worldwide: the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the TWA terminal in JFK Airport, Dulles Airport, outside Washington D.C., the CBS Building in New York, the General Motors Technical Center in Michigan, the US Embassy in London, and many other landmarks. Equally celebrated are his furniture designs, including the Tulip Table and Womb Chair. While Saarinen's exuberant, even expressionistic, forms were lightning rods for many critics, his unique personal style is now much admired, making him a key figure for many designers practicing today. Saarinen's was a career of innovation. His airport terminals combined the poetry of sculpture with daring structural feats and raganizational genius; his pioneering industrial complexes for GM, IBM, and Bell Labs brought rational modernism to corporate America; and his furniture and residential buildings conveyed an optimistic, humane vision for the future. This illustrated monograph spans Saarinen's entire career, including his drawings, models, most important built works, and furniture.

Although both are central to architecture, siting and construction are often treated as separate domains. In "Uncommon Ground", David Leatherbarrow illuminates their relationship, focusing on the years between 1930 and 1960, when utopian ideas about the role of technology in building gave way to an awareness of its disruptive impact on cities and culture. He examines the work of three architects, Richard Neutra, Antonin Raymond, and Aris Konstantinidis, who practiced in the United States, Japan, and Greece respectively. Leatherbarrow rejects the assumption that buildings of the modern period, particularly those that used the latest technology, were designed without regard to their surroundings. Although the prefabricated elements used in the buildings were designed independent of siting considerations, architects used these elements to modulate the environment. Leatherbarrow shows how the role of walls, the traditional element of architectural definition and platform partition, became less significant than that of the platforms themselves, the floors, ceilings, and intermediate levels. He shows how frontality was replaced by the building's four-sided extension into its surroundings, resulting in frontal configurations previously characteristic of the back. Arguing that the boundary between inside and outside was radically redefined, Leatherbarrow challenges cherished notions about the autonomy of the architectural object and about regional coherence. Modern architectural topography, he suggests, is an interplay of buildings, landscapes, and cities, as well as the humans who use them. The conflict between technological progress and cultural continuity, Leatherbarrow claims, exists only in theory, not in the real world of architecture. He argues that the act of building is not a matter of restoring regional identity by re-creating familiar signs, but of incorporating construction into the process of topography's perpetual becoming.

Résumé:
"Substance over Spectacle" presents the best and brightest architectural work in Canada in the last ten years, providing a representative sample of Canadian architectural practice since the early nineties, and demonstrating a specific Canadian sensibility that is unlike any architectural trend elsewhere in the world. The book also explores issues of viability, sustainability, community, and utility as they relate to the Canadian architectural experience. Included is the work of twenty-five architects from every area of the country, each represented by an installation of their own design and construction. In addition to photographs of the finished projects, "Substance over Spectacle" also features images of models and architectural drawings, together with analytical/critical text demonstrating the architectural ideas embedded in the work. Five essays deal with different aspects of contemporary Canadian architecture, written by some of Canada’s leading thinkers on architecture: George Baird, Sherry McKay, Marco Polo, Georges Adamczyk, and Andrew Gruft. Publication of the book coincides with an exhibition of the same name mounted by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at the University of British Columbia, in April 2005, during the international conference of the Society of Architectural Historians, which is taking place at UBC. "Substance over Spectacle", the first national critical overview of Canadian architecture in some eighteen years, offers fresh new perspectives on how our architecture defines us as we approach the first mid-decade of the new century.

Résumé:
The twentieth-century architect Mies van der Rohe once declared that 'Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together'. In "Travels in the History of Architecture", renowned architectural writer Robert Harbison looks closely at these bricks, taking us on a journey through the great themes and movements of architecture, from antiquity to the present day. Taking as a starting place his own experience of the physical fabric of buildings, Harbison interprets the conceptions of the original architects and makers, pointing out carefully crafted detail and inspiring form along the way. Beginning with the great temples and tombs of the Egyptians, and the monuments and shrines of Greek and Roman architecture, and concluding with the museums of the twenty-first century, each chapter of his Travels focuses on a moment in architectural history, including Byzantine, Baroque, Mannerism, Historicism, Functionalism and Decon structionism.

globalized society, and it will continue to do so in the future. Already today, the demands of the job no longer correspond to the profile on which classical architectural training is based. In this context, the question that arises is no longer that of the building alone, but also that of a changed approach to building and new pathways within design itself. This is where Explorations comes in: internationally celebrated authors, all of whom are professors as well and hence directly involved in the processes they describe, address the principal topics of contemporary architectural research. Taking the works of their own design studios as examples they offer concrete discussions of those topics and place them in the context of applied research and practice. Short and accessible essays on the most important architectural movements of the twentieth century clarify the relationship between the subjects discussed and canonical architectural research.

Résumé:
Residential design provides a rich testing ground for architectural innovation. Intimate scales and specific programs inspire distinctive homes, and comparatively small budgets are catalysts for exploring nontraditional materials. Modern Shoestring proves that building a contemporary house can be affordable and shows how constraints actually stimulate the most creative design solutions. Eighteen residential projects are presented, with emphasis on the goals of the owners, the site, and the cost in the design process. Collections determine floor plans, observatories are built for starry rural nights, and found and industrial materials such as highway construction remnants, laboratory counters, plastic water bottles, and discarded chalkboards keep costs low while imbuing structures with character. These ingenious designs range in cost from $50 to $220 per square foot and represent geographical settings from Los Angeles to Anchorage to East Hampton.

In Travels in the History of Architecture, Robert Harbison provides an engaging and concise companion to the great themes and aesthetic movements in architecture from antiquity to the present day. The book begins its journey with the great temples of the Egyptians and the shrines of Classical Greece and Rome and then provides a complete survey of architecture through the present day. Each chapter of this dynamic and approachable volume focuses on a movement in architectural history, including Byzantine, Baroque, Mannerism, Historicism, Functionalism, and Deconstruction. Unique to this work is Harbison’s wide-ranging approach, which draws on references and examples outside of architecture—from literature, art, sculpture, and history—to further illustrate and contextualize the themes and ideas of each period.
