Résumé:
Since the 1950s, Egypt has developed a dozen new towns in the desert around Cairo. This book offers the first systematic exploration of these cities, analyzing their urban form, their promise, and their shortcomings. Originally intended to satisfy growing demand for housing, most of the desert towns have never been completed. Taking this permanent condition of emerging urban development at face value, the study aims to identify the as-yet dormant potential of these towns through a series of design scenarios. Cairo Desert Cities underscores the value of re-engaging in modernist town planning, for wiping away the dust of past failures may uncover the contours of future opportunities. With over 300 illustrations, this clothbound edition is an engaging and visually rich introduction to the urban development of Greater Cairo, the largest urban area in Africa, and the practices that have shaped it.

Résumé:
Few figures in nineteenth-century photography remain as elusive and intriguing as John Beasley Greene (1832 1856). Over the course of an exceptionally brief career he created a body of photographs that were publicly admired by his peers and continue to capture the imagination of contemporary audiences. Born in France to an American banker, he made his first expedition to Egypt in 1853, where he photographed ancient Egyptian monuments and is thought to be the first archaeologist to use photography. In these photographs, he positioned his horizon lines with precision, at times placing them so low in the frame that the photograph is nearly all blank sky, or so high that the monuments are almost swallowed up by vast seas of sand. Some of his Egyptian landscapes are so visually spare they appear to be of nothing at all.

Résumé:
Julien-David Le Roy's Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grece, initially issued in 1758, first revealed to European eyes the wonders of Greek classical architecture. Overnight, Greece became the rage, much to the chagrin of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and other defenders of the genius of Rome. The impact of the volume's splendid engravings of Athens's ancient ruins on contemporary aesthetics was heightened, particularly in the much-expanded edition of 1770, by its two highly provocative theoretical essays. In one, Le Roy set forth a compelling linear history of the conceptual forms of architecture that began in Egypt, moved to Greece, then Rome, and finally modern Europe. In the other, seeking to express the experience of architectural form and its effects, Le Roy gave new voice to feeling. Here the second edition of Les ruines is published in English for the first time.
