Résumé:
This book examines one of the key notions of modernist architecture as it was formulated in Vienna around 1900. Providing a close analysis of four major buildings - Olbrich's Secession Building, Hoffmann's Purkersdorf Sanatorium, Wagner's Postal Savings Bank, and Loos's Michaelerplatz building - Leslie Topp investigates how "truth" had a variety of meanings, including truth to purpose, symbolist or ideal truth, and ethical notions of authenticity. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material, Topp offers a new interpretation of familiar buildings that are shown to encompass utopianis, hyper-rationality and subjectivism. She also explores the connections between Viennese modern architecture and contemporary painting, psychiatry, fashion, labor issues, and anti-Semitic politics.

Résumé:
"Inhabiting Identity" is the fifth in an annual series of publications featuring the best young architects as selected by The Architectural League of New York. For this year's competition, architects were asked to explore how technology has altered our sense of space. Their answers not only challenge our sense of habitation but teach us to think beyond the normal and the mundane. This year's winners of the competition—Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, Steven Mankouche, Ben Checkwitch, Stella Betts, Lisa Hsieh, and Mike Latham—make use of unusual materials (wooden shipping pallets) while maintaining creative ideas (mobile rooms) in their investigations of the role of modern technology in our daily lives.

Résumé:
Even a casual observer can spy traces of Islamic architecture and design on buildings all over the world, a reminder that artistic traditions and visual culture have never been limited to their region or country of origin, but rather are highly diffusible. This book brings together scholars from architectural studies, design, art history, and other fields to challenge and expand concepts of Islamic architecture. Ranging from eighteenth-century Ottoman tents to manifestations of Islamic motifs in 1960s Hawaii, this richly illustrated volume raises key questions about Islamic architecture, and, more broadly, about how we can rethink our understanding of material, artistic, and cultural mobility in the modern world.

Résumé:
This book focuses on the ephemeral architecture built for festivals and shows how these constructions played a role in the development of Western architectural and urban theory. Festival architecture has allowed architects to experiment with new ideas, new forms and new spatial arrangements. The book is arranged in historical periods from Antiquity to the modern era. The analyses of specific festivals are set in relation to contemporary ideas and theories in architecture and urban design and essays focus on either architecture or urban design. The wealth of illustrations depict many unusual and rarely seen images from European festival tradition. The contributors are well-known architectural historians and art historians.

Résumé:
In recent architecture theory and practise there has been a tendency to refer to exteriors as a skin concealing an interior, as opposed to the traditional and more physical concepts of surface, flatness, and depth. The computer now enables the architect to call his design into life, free from the rigid material form, and view it as a flexible and interactive creation. In this book, the concepts of flatness and surface tension are examined in the light of virtual design and built reality. A selection of projects are presented to show how architects regard space and surfaces in modern architectural practice in the digital age.

Résumé:
After September 11, Smith asserts, late modern architecture suddenly seemed an indulgence. With close readings of key buildings - including Jørn Utzon’s Sydney Opera House, Minoru Yamasaki’s World Trade Center, Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Richard Meier’s Getty Center - Smith traces the growth of the architecture of modernity and then charts its aftermath in the conditions of contemporaneity. Smith focuses on the very culture of aftermath itself, exploring how global politics, clashing cultures, and symbolic warfare have changed the way we experience destination architecture. Like other artists everywhere, architects are responding to the idea of aftermath by questioning the viability of their forms and the validity of their purposes.

Résumé:
The book spans Murcutt's entire career, from the early modernist houses to his most recent commissions in the 21st century, identifies recurring themes in his work and analyses how his buildings 'marry modern architecture to the place, the territory, the landcape' to arrive at an ecological functionalism. The buildings themselves are an eclectic selection ranging from Murcutt's courtyard houses in Sydney to free-standing residences set in Australia's barren and isolated landscapes. The full-colour photography, much of it supplied from the architect's own private collection, testifies to the aesthetic appeal of the buildings, while Murcutt's line drawings and plans lend further insight into his work.

Résumé:
What has planetary-scale computation done to our geopolitical realities? It takes different forms at different scales—from energy and mineral sourcing and subterranean cloud infrastructure to urban software and massive universal addressing systems; from interfaces drawn by the augmentation of the hand and eye to users identified by self-quantification and the arrival of legions of sensors, algorithms, and robots. Together, how do these distort and deform modern political geographies and produce new territories in their own image? In an account that is both theoretical and technical, drawing on political philosophy, design theory, and computer science, Bratton explores six layers of ''The Stack'': Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, User.
