Résumé:
Based in Tokyo, Tokujin Yoshioka has built a career using unconventional materials to create objects and spaces. Often employing paper and glass, as well as unusual elements, such as plastic drinking straws, his studio’s work has achieved a cult following among design enthusiasts. His most recent experiments transcend industrial design, occupying a space between science and art, typified by the Venus chair, where crystals were naturally grown over a fiber form immersed in a glass tank filled with a solution. Designed by Groovisions, the book includes more than three hundred sketches, concept renderings, and photographs. The projects are organized thematically, with an emphasis on materials and process, and show how Yoshioka transforms commonplace items to create objects of tensile strength and sublime beauty.

"The City, Seen As a Garden of Ideas" is a survey of Cook’s career-long project to reinvigorate the city as we know it. A series of meditations on contemporary urban conditions in cities as diverse as Tokyo, Edinburgh, and Santa Monica, this volume also functions as an informal memoir in which Cook reveals the influences and motivations behind his works and recent projects. Included among the projects are housing at Lutzowplatz, Berlin; the winning competition design for the museum at Bad Deutsches Altenberg, Austria (both in collaboration with Christine Hawley); and the winning competition design for the Kunsthaus, a museum in Graz, Austria (in collaboration with Colin Fournier). Finally, a collection of projects and texts created especially for this monograph completes this presentation of Cook’s work.

The Winter 2017 issue features incisive commentary by critics and historians on recently completed buildings – from BIG’s VIA 57 West and WORKac’s 93 Reade Street in New York to Herzog & de Meuron’s Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg to Archi-Depot, a museum dedicated to architecture models in Tokyo. In addition, Michael Meredith, Valéry Didelon, and Eric Owen Moss contribute writing on the aesthetic of indifference, the history and future of OMA’s 1989 Euralille masterplan, and a pseudo-scripture for architects. In a special section, practitioners, critics, and activists address the possibility of architecture in the age of Trump.

Résumé:
Although architecture alone cannot solve the problem of homelessness, the question arises: What and which roles can it play? How can architecture collaborate with other disciplines in developing ways to permanently house those who do not have a home? This volume seeks to explore and understand a reality that involves the expertise of national, regional, and city agencies, nongovernmental organizations, health-care fields, and academic disciplines. Through scholarly essays, interviews, analyses of architectural case studies, and research on the historical and current situation in Los Angeles, Moscow, Mumbai, New York, São Paulo, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Tokyo, this book unfolds different entry points toward understanding homelessness and some of the many related problems. The publication accompanies the exhibition “Who’s Next” by the Architekturmuseum München in Munich, Germany.

Résumé:
Seeing cities around the globe in their larger environmental contexts, we begin to understand how the world shapes urban landscapes and how urban landscapes shape the world. Authors Karen Seto and Meredith Reba provide these revealing views to enhance readers’ understanding of the shape, growth, and life of urban settlements of all sizes—from the remote town of Namche Bazaar in Nepal to the vast metropolitan prefecture of Tokyo, Japan. Using satellite data, the authors show urban landscapes in new perspectives. The book’s beautiful and surprising images pull back the veil on familiar scenes to highlight the growth of cities over time, the symbiosis between urban form and natural landscapes, and the vulnerabilities of cities to the effects of climate change.

Résumé:
Breaking with the idea that gardens are places of indulgence and escapism, these studies of ritualized practices reveal that gardens in Europe, Asia, the United States, and the Caribbean have in fact made significant contributions to cultural change. This book demonstrates methods and the striking results of garden reception studies. The first section explores how cultural changes occur, and devotes chapters to public landscapes in the Netherlands, seventeenth-century Parisian gardens, Freemason gardens in Tuscany, nineteenth-century Scottish kitchen gardens, and the public parks of Edo and modern Tokyo. The second part provides striking examples of construction of self in vernacular gardens in Guadeloupe and American Japanese-style gardens in California. Finally, the third section analyzes struggles for political change in gardens of Yuan China and modern Britain.
